Another reason to thin the contrast paint with contrast medium instead of water is that water wil decrease the drying time, thus making it harder to remove excess before the paint dries.

Richard i like to thank you because this video was a spring board for me to scale up alot as a new painter. For having no skills too for a lack of a better word leveling up very fast. Yes this may for some not be that impressiv but for me it was. I was able too replicate this from almost no skills. Ofcourse failed and learned and put in the hours on the regular. but this showed me that i can paint good and one day become a good painter. I am humle, and constantly beat myself without mercy but if i'm 100% with myself on how much i grown in a couple of mounths is insane. Again thank you Richard i'm having alot of fun.

I really want to start painting warhammer miniatures and have decided to try some of the heresy Era traitor legions, since they are my absolute favourites. Your tutorials give me so much hope, that i can get a great result after practicing enough without having to buy an airbrush! Could you maybe show how you would paint some of the other heresy era legions some time in the future?

In your experience now is 50:50 contrast to contrast medium generally the safest and most effective method? As opposed to your earlier videos in this style.

Hello Rich, thank you for another incredible tutorial! Two questions: if the head was the same color as the rest of the mini, would you still paint it separately,? Also, would you consider stipple glazing up to pure white in post-wash steps to make the armor read more white and less bone, or would this not work given how dark the post-wash model is?
@brockvenator2299 Жыл бұрын
I really like the idea of contrast washes for tying miniatures together, they look very rich and saves the faff of having to get the oils out.I'm assuming this would work well also with other dark brown contrast paints?

Thanks for the video! Ive taken inspiration from your Imperial Fists stippled video to paint up a Lamenter for a friend of mine! Id love to see how you tackle a 30k Dark Angel with this stippling method

On the gloss finish on GW shades - they recently reformulated all the shade paints, at the same time as they brought out the latest range of Contrast paints, and deliberately gave them a glossier finish than they had before (the 'Gloss' versions were discontinued). So there's nothing wrong with your new Agrax Earthshade if you're finding it glossier than before - it's meant to be like that. If you want to make it more matt, I just paint over a bit of Lahmian Medium to knock it back.

Hi Rich, curious about your ideas on which paints work best for the stippling method you started this tutorial off with. I assume it's helpful if they are more opaque. Single pigment paints from Kimera would work less well, with the exception of the opaque ones like Yellow and Red Oxide.

Hey Richard, I’m about to try using this method with Stormcast Eternals, using a ‘white’ and old gold scheme. I was going to use a dark brown base coat. Should I do a wash/pin wash to darken the deepest bits? I was going to use the classic blue but that green is beautiful. Would you recommend reusing the green for their capes or adding another colour?

…… I’m going to try this as DG are my chosen 30k army. But gee whiz, this look amazing. I’m fascinated how up until the dark path, you can still see the individual stipple marks. But after that and with some very gentle glazes, they disappear and you’re just left with amazing texture. Truly wonderful.

Regarding glossy Agrax Earthshade: Games Workshop recently changed the formulas on all their washes to bring them closer to the contrast formulas -- whether this is because of the genuine belief that the new formula works better, something they did to simplify their supply chain because now they can use contrast components in their washes, or some combination of the two, is up for debate -- and the new washes are a) much glossier and b) much more gap-seeky and less useful for things like glazing. The old formula you're recommending here is no longer available. I believe the closest replacement for the old Agrax Earthshade would be either Army Painter Strong Tone or Duncan Rhodes's new Two Thin Coats brown wash I forget the name of.
@Crabbisaurus Жыл бұрын
I would also add that the TT combat washes are also a pretty close replacement to the old GW washes!

I’m interested in understanding how the contrast paint stage would work on vehicles and dreadnoughts that have large flat panels. I’ve found the contrast paints or shades pool and streak on flat panels that vehicles have. I’m working on a dry brushed Raven guard scheme based on the old forgeworld method for painting blackshields. For the recess shading and to tie the drybrushing together they washed the model in nuln oil. I’m hesitant to do this due to pooling so I’m left thinking I should do an all over oil wash.

White Dwarf issue 110; Wayne England illustrated the front cover and also featured in the (IIRC) Illuminated showcase article. His cover art shows space marines (of an undetermined chapter) in mottled camouflage armour reminiscent of your brush process above. Are they Death Guard? Raptors? Or more of the earthy yellow-green Blood Angels seen battling with Orks on Armageddon in the interior artwork? Great work as always, many thanks for sharing this with us.

Hi, really love the videos and I’ve learned a ton. One recommendation. I’d edit out the loud lip-smacking sounds that pop fairly regularly. Have to admit, they quickly get fatiguing and may turn viewers off, especially through a long tutorial. It’s easy to just cut them off the beginning of dialogue in your favorite editing suite. A little audio editing & mastering with really increase the quality of the narration and will increase retention. Not a criticism, as everyone gets dry mouth from talking so long, but they can gross some people out.
