I have a ceramic alto, I also have a couple 4 and 6 hole pendants but my plastic night by noble gets WAY more use lol...I think my ceramic one may technically sound better but the plastic one is just...less stress. And it's easier to play the high notes too.

"They're basically indistructable" And this is why my two year old gets to run around the house with plastic 6 & 12 holes. She loves blowing them like a whistle, and even though she doesn't have enough dexterity yet to move her fingers over the holes to play a tune, she's been moving her fingers up and down like she's trying to play. Its the cutest thing, and its hopefully developing her interest in music at an early age... something she wouldn't be able to do if it was a ceramic ocarina

I ordered a used STL on ebay today.. I think ok I have 2 little children and I know they want to rip it off my fingers to play with the Ocarina too. That is why I think the plastic one reduses stress at the beginning a lot. When I get used to the instrument I will save for another one. Just for me.. Than the kids can still use the plastic one at any time. I thought this video is just you talking about plastic - yes or no.. but your story of Japan and making friends and good memories warms my heart so much. And the reason you got into these instrument. And you are so sweet to your cat. Now you have a new sub. Have a nice day!

Aerospace Engineering Student here, if I learnt anything from my Material Science lectures and work with ceramics it is that they are incredibly fragile nomatter what you do. High Force - Breaks Low Force - Can Break Nomatter what force over a long timeframe - Breaks Also it is a pain to manufacture which is why changed my mind about trying an Okarina out. Never new there were also ones made from Thermoplastics to Thermosets which are way more ... Nerd Nerd... I bought both a ceramic and plastic 12 hole recently. I have kids, so I definitely use the plastic one in practice much more. In fact, my plastic ocarina slid off my laptop when I was picking it up. It fell on the floor less than a day after I got it and wasn't worried about it lol

Nice! I saw this video just after I ordered the Night by Noble ocarina, and I'm so happy that I did. Last night, I 3D printed an ocarina (the best one you tested, actually!), just because I could. Had some stringing issues with the print quality, but the ocarina still plays the lower notes really well. Problem is, the higher notes don't come out at all. I'll try to fix the printing issues (I changed computers and lost my previous settings) and see if I can print an ocarina that plays the higher notes well, but just trying it a little bit, it made me want to get an ocarina that actually works. I have never played music in my life before. But the idea of a small, indestructible instrument I can just throw in my backpack and have fun with is enthralling. Thank you! And thank you for testing those 3D printed ocarinas.

I do not play the ocarina yet, but I've always favored plastics over inconsistent "show" materials like full-grain wood, bone, and ceramic. That begs the question of metal ocarinas. Anyway, I'm curious what you think of the Coda EDC Flute. Interesting name aside, it looks to share and build upon lots of the advantages of pocket-sized ocarinas, but I wouldn't know--that's why I want someone else's refined perspective on it.

My first ocarina was a cheap ceramic, though having heared that the plastic ones might be better. I just wanted an instrument that I would love the feel and esthetic of , but spending a lot of money seemed risky, since I might end up playing only for a month or so. But I still play today years later and my ceramic ocarina is fine. It technically plays all the notes it is supposed to (alto c 12 hole), however it is not easy to be in tune at lowest and highest notes and I do not like the sound of the high notes on it. A few years into playing I got a cheap plastic alto c ocarina from a local music store and this one does not play the high f, but apart from that it is okay. But I really would like to get a good ocarina now, so I can see how it is different. Fun fact: my ceramic ocarina is still sold on Amazon, but at a much higher price.

I also got the night by noble. The sound quality is awesome, but I must admit I find it a bit high and shrill. I think the Focalink Osawa plastic in Alto C seems to have the same sound quality with the lower tones. The Shape of the Osawa is also just exceptional.

What ceramic would you recommend, I 3d printed one that I can get full range on (mostly, it's a little airy in the top end) and I love it, my wife, not so much... I currently have the Night by Noble in my Amazon cart ready for me to commit, but I would also like a ceramic to compare with these other two, I was looking at the STL Nebula or the Ocarinawind forrest whisper both have relatively good reviews, but I am open to suggestions. also great content man.

@andy convincing argument, I'm tempted to get one. I'm a harmonica player so I have a lot of experience but not on flutes.. 😛 can you only play in major keys?? 🙂
@loonloonlikemoonmoon1577
@loonloonlikemoonmoon1577 2 жыл бұрын
Short answer: Nope! Long answer: The vast, vast, vast majority of ocarinas are tuned to major keys, with the most common being C. That said, as most ocarinas are fully chromatic, you can still play things outside of the key of your ocarina, but your range will be smaller than if it were keyed to that scale. Think of it this way. Your standard 12 hole alto C ocarina will have a range of A4-F6. If you were to lift fingers in the proper order one by one, you would play up the C scale; that is what makes it keyed in C. But the ocarina isn't only able to play the C scale; you can do finger combinations for sharps and flats . So nothing is stopping you from playing in minor scales. But since you're limited to the range of A4-F6, the number of songs you can play in C major are going to be larger than the number of songs you could play in, say, E minor. D minor would be a lot more doable as more of the notes in that scale would be found on the A4-F6 range. Hope this makes sense!

@@derekfrost8991 That's super fair! It's not the instrument for everyone C: Plus the harmonica is a super dope instrument That said if you ever do wanna give it a try again, bass ocarinas are a lot quieter than most ocarinas, and Hind in particular has quite quiet ocarinas (if you can get your hands on them, he is in semi retirement)

NBN will probably be my second 'real' ocarina. Not counting 3d prints or a cheap Awef I got used. Why not my first? I won't be taking the ceramic outside, will be wearing a neck strap and likely sitting playing cross legged on my bed mostof the time. Not wanting to being it outside will mean I only torture the neighbors with the poor sound and honestly, they deserve it, the public at large do not.
