Another thing to mention about Spencer’s ocarinas is if you want a different color you can email him and he will work with you to get that color. Be aware though you will be charge extra and it will take longer. But I have the ocarina of time model in a beautiful lavender color.

3:10 You spoke so much about how STL misnames many of their Ocarinas and how you can see in some of the photos what it actually is, but missed pointing out that on that page they say "Pitch range from E4 to C6". That is the most reliable way of knowing what range the Ocarina you buy will have.

Most non-classical musicians don't know what tenor actually means. It comes from the French 'teneur' which just means holding the melody, which by convention is now usually in the soprano range but used to be in the alto range. Alto in Latin also means 'high' which it isn't really in music, except of course where all things are relative.. 😬

One thing to keep in mind when getting a Spencer ocarina is the need for patience. I ordered my first Spencer back in June and am still waiting for it, so the 30 day wait mentioned on his website needs an overhaul. With STL and Songbird, the shipping tends to be normal pace because everything is in stock. I can't speak for ICO, since I have yet to purchase from them yet.

I'll second that. When I emailed Spencer, he seemed very sorry that it was taking so long. I tried to make sure I conveyed that it was fine, and I was still happily waiting for my piece. Eventually he shipped it, and I couldn't be happier. The trick is to remember that he doesn't keep these things stocked on a shelf somewhere. He makes them as they're ordered. At least, that's how I understand it from his emails. Great guy! Thumbs up!

Spencer typically doesn't carry inventory and makes ocarinas to order, which is why it takes so long. My spencers also took over a month to arrive, so that's a good point to remember! STL and Songbird carry inventory, so they typically ship out on the same day

I have a Night by Noble but just bought and received the Coda EDC which is a double inline ocarina made by the creator of Mountain Ocarinas. It's a little difficult to get a pure tone in the lower/alto chamber, but other than that, it's such a great instrument! Highly recommend you check it out since I know you said in your Top 5 ocarinas video that you love inline and Mountain ocarinas!

I just purchased a Pendant Ocarina from Songbird and currently waiting for it to arrive! I find that songbird is the best option in terms navigating the website. I haven't actually used any of their Ocarinas yet, but all the reviews are very very positive so I have high hopes! Thanks for the review on the websites, it was very helpful for me to be able to pick out my Ocarina! 👍👍👍

I own both the night by noble and the spencer in green. If I ever buy another ocarina, it'll be a ceramic directly from noble in korea. Their prices are fair and not many people have them, so I would have a relatively unique piece. But then again, that spencer is beautiful, so I probably won't need another ocarina ever again. At least, not until I get FAR better at playing.

It's been at least 3 years, but when I purchased from Imperial city (direct from China), I was surprised at how relatively low shipping was! I don't remember the exact amount, but it wasn't bad

Be aware that the Bass model of ICO is heavy . And generaly with ocarina you dont want to think ( cheaper is a better option ) , or else you will end up with crappy ocarina . STL and songbird are mass produce so the attention to the tuning is lacking . Your way better investing in a good handmade instrument that you will be able to grow with it .

Hey, thanks for the content! I have a question for you- what is your opinion on "YiXing" purple clay for Ocarinas? I hear a lot of mixed info on them. Some say it's the literal best thing an ocarina can be made from, others say it's really no different than a regular old ceramic one.

I think purple clay is *mostly* marketing and doesn't make that much of a difference. I've never seen a bad purple clay ocarina, but many of the best ocarinas are also just regular ceramic. I generally wouldn't consider it a major factor for buying, since if it does make a difference, it isn't a big one and is likely more attributable to the design of the particular ocarina

I'm actually working on a deep-dive into Ocarina Wind. From my impressions, they have some good ocarinas, but their quality is a bit inconsistent (though much more consistent than many similarly-priced brands). If you're unsure on whether it's the ocarina or you, I'd recommend getting a Night by Noble, which is one of the best plastic ocarinas. If you have issues with that, then you have some work to do with your technique before evaluating the Ocarina Wind model, and if you don't, then the Ocarina Wind one might have issues itself

The countries where ocarinas are most popular (Japan, Taiwan, Korea, China) are all exceptionally humid and rainy. Purple clay actually benefits from moisture as well (at least from you playing it), since the clay itself is more porous than other ceramic. In short, don’t worry-the moisture of the environment shouldn’t be an issue as long as you don’t regularly like, hold the ocarina out in rain.

songbird ocarinas actually sell tenors as well or they market a few of their ocarinas like STL does. I don't know if they are trying to compete with STL. So I think a tenor range is possible it all comes down to individual voicing, Its true they need to work on how they market and I think its a market that needs to be explored. I am a tenor singer so I think ocarinas need that representaion.

The Hog Rider card is unlocked from the Spell Valley (Arena 5). He is a very fast building-targeting, melee troop with moderately high hitpoints and damage. He appears just like his Clash of Clans counterpart; a man with brown eyebrows, a beard, a mohawk, and a golden body piercing in his left ear who is riding a hog. A Hog Rider card costs 4 Elixir to deploy. Strategy His fast move speed can boost forward mini tanks like an Ice Golem in a push. At the same time, he can also function as a tank for lower hitpoint troops such as Goblins as he still has a fair amount of health. Most cheap swarms complement the Hog Rider well, as they are nearly as fast as him and usually force more than one card out of the opponent's hand.

I find it really offputting when people "snob up" and rant about STL, and then talk about trying to get more people to view the ocarina as a serious instrument. STL uses the standard classical nomenclature used by musicians for almost all classical instruments. As ocarina players we can either be taken seriously by other musicians and composers, or we can assert that the tenor range does not exist. We cannot have it both ways. Pick one.

STL makes a lot of great instruments, but it's really confusing for new ocarina players when STL uses different terminology than what's standard for the ocarina. From the 1800s when classical ocarinas were invented, the range they call tenor has ALWAYS been called Alto. I think it's nothing to do with the ocarina being taken seriously by other musicians and more following standardization for the instrument itself
