The Airfix Waterloo RHA are incredible. There is no equal to them. No other company has a detailed horse and limber system, nor do they have a large number of gun crew. Great job by Airfix.

I bought this set in 1975 when I was 12 and it didn't have all those flashes. I think the moulds have worn. I added a load of Esci figures to my Waterloo collection in the 1990s which included General Staff figures. I just need the time now to repaint them all and set them up!

I was obsessed with Airfix 1/72 soldiers in the 1970’s, had literally thousands, sadly my dad got dementia and in early stages he threw out all of my collection 😢

Thanks for your excellent review. In fact, the box art from Brian Knight for both ACW and RHA artillery was a plagiarism of a 1879 painting by Alphonse de Neuville : "Défense de la porte de Longboyeau", depicting an episode of the FPW in 1870.

Yes this was one of the first sets I had as a kid back in 1972. The only other sets I remember buying before were the WW1 British RHA and WW1 British infantry. Pocket money well spent, no question. I think they were about 17p a box back in those days if I remember rightly.

Great review! Thanx. The figure with the implement was a match. A stick with salt peter hemp rope coiled around it. Navy used the same that's how I recognized it. Thanx again for sharing.

Great set of figures. They were the first Waterloo set I owned back in 1972. Uniforms very well detailed and they look far better in grey than the yellow plastic set I had.

One of the nicest and most historically accurate sets Airfix made. By the time the grey Battleset ones came out, the moulds were getting quite worn; I'm lucky enough to have bought one of the early sets from the 70's in yellow plastic, and there was virtually no flash. I think the idea was to have two crews, one for each gun, with one loading and the other firing. The guy with the short sponge was designed to go in front of the gun as if ramming it, with the rammer end hidden inside the barrel. The chap firing is using a length of slow match around a stick. I've done this when re-enacting Napoleonic artillery, the linstock is held by another crewman as a way of holding a longer piece of slow match as a reserve (and also a quick way to re-light the match if it gets blown out when you fire !) The great thing with this set was that in the days when Airfix was all we had, the heads could be cut off and pinned on other bodies to make (somewhat crude) Bavarians, Wurttemburgers, early Austrians and anyone else with crested helmets, while the mounted figures were converted en masse to make all different types of light cavalry.

FYI, the Royal Artillery are now based at Larkhill, near Stonehenge, the Barracks in Woolwich is still called Royal Artillery Barracks from when they where there. Very close by at Napier Lines are now based The Kings Troop Royal Horse Artillery, that do ceremonial gun salutes with the guns from WW1.

I have actually painted this one. I drilled the barrels and replaced the limber with strips of thin card as it should be on both sides of both sets of horses. There was also a kind of yoke on the left side of the carriage I had to build Also the wheels didn't have sticky out rivets so chopped them off. I love this set very rewarding to build and paint.

A very nice review of one of my favourite sets. I have two sets, one from 1982 (yellow) and the grey set from the farmhouse set and both have those injection pin marks that you mention.... on the same figures. So there has been no improvement in that department over 37 years! Like the reference to Bloody Ban, he was definitely a rum bugger! I live in Southport and nearby is the village of Tarleton and there is Banastre Road in Southport. So I think that he has a connection with the area. However, I'm sure that I read that he is buried in Leintwardine churchyard in Shropshire.
