Hmm. I think we might have been misinterpreted at the part on monolids. We weren't saying that ALL Asian people have monolids. We were trying to explain what double eyelid surgery is about, and we had to explain how monolids is what people are trying to fix, though we don't actually perceive the issue ourselves. Sorry if it came across otherwise!

That's true, I'm japanese, live in Brazil, and I have "monolids" but my sister doesn't, the other part is also true, my friends didn't notice my "monolids" until I pointed that out. Love you guys >.< you're so adorable. Cheers from both Brazil and Japan

I would say monolids is an asian thing as I'm yet to see a non-asian with monolids, but of course there are people with natural double eyelids. Just another fun fact of the day.. there's also two types of double eyelids - Open-cut and close-cut. forums.soompi.com/discussion/168486/open-close-cut-eyes-double-lidded-eyes Here's a gif with all the recent Miss Korea contestant. imgur.com/0MMzzLQ Definitely not hating as it's everyone's personal choice but it is rather interesting!

taniiah wow thats really interesting. didnt realise there were actually terms for different double eyelids. i have one single eyelid and one double eyelid. My eye thats double eyelid is both open and closed - but usually stays in closed mode. sometimes though wheni wake up my eye will become an open one but with a secondary crease where it should close - but will close during the day or when i wake up the next day. sometimes it stays open for weeks though lol

Every race has something that they think is ugly on themselves, but people on the outside think the exact opposite. I'm black and there are stigmas about our whole entire appearance, especially our hair... we think that we have bad hair and other people have good hair, because straight hair is good hair... it's a mess. Finally people are starting to realize that we are beautiful the way we are,slowly and surely!!! Your eyes are awesome!!!! Don't ever change them!!!

WORD EDUCATION FUNTIME CORNER The "plastic" in "plastic surgery" comes from a time when the word meant the same thing as the Korean translation: "reshaping", "sculpting", "malleable", "molding". Plastic surgery has little to do with plastic the material (in case you're wondering, silicone is not a plastic). Plastic the material was so named because it had these properties, but then became so ubiquitous that it supplanted the original meaning. Compare: "neuroplasticity", "plastic arts" (sculpture), "phenotypic plasticity"

To expand on your definition: plas/o is a combining form for development or formation. The suffix -tic means "pertaining to". So, plastic literally means "pertaining to formation" or "pertaining to development" -the more you know rainbow -

That was super fun to know though, it's like... I knew it, but I never really kept it in mind, ever. :D In my native language we have this word "plastical" which means something along the lines of elastic, you know, it describes something that has those qualities. "Plasteline" lol is the word for this substanse kids play with to sculpture their own creations and has nothing to do with plastic the material.

i feel like the surgeon has got really no right to disagree. its not his business. if the person does have issues it is not the surgeons problem, he could recommend a psyciatrist(too lazy to check how its written u feel me) but that could sound somewhat offensive. also if a person genuenly doesn't like what they see in the mirror and cant accept it why not change it completely? if they're not happy with it should they live an unhappy life because of a trivial thing like looks? also some (valerie lukyanova etc) i think look like walking pieces of art its amazing to have the guts to do something that permanent and extreme to yourself. do they do it in the heat of the moment, no. can they still change it if they dont like it, yes.

lxItsLauraxI Surgeons in Korea sometimes egg their patients on though, saying, "Yeah, you would be prettier if you got that procedure done." Or if a patient wants to get a procedure because they think it'll make their boyfriends happy, surgeon's will happily do it for them. In America, surgeons would refuse.

I am Asian so I do understand why those are the popular surgery. And honestly, this video only proved that koreans cares a lot about their looks. Reformative surgery or plastic surgery. Whatever you call it means one thing, you change how you look. And if you aren't scarred from a fire, I don't see why you need one. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The fact that koreans embrace plastic surgery or reformative surgery only goes to show that looks matters alot there and this is really dangerous. Because does that mean a person with talent is no longer considered for promotions in jobs just because they don't look good? You see why I have a problem with this. And the fact that there are people who look alike due to having the same sort of plastic surgery only scares me more. Why? Go read Uglies by Scott Westerfeld. By looking alike, we are getting rid of our individuality and is that what you want? In a way, this does not help me think of Korea in a better light.

I'm mexican american, and as much as I'm interested in korean culture, I've got to say that this is among the most negative aspects of korea. No matter where you go, people are gonna care about how they look. It is part of being human. However, it seems that Korea and other Asian cultures really take that to the next level. In my opinion, I think it is okay to tweak some parts with plastic surgery as long as it it doesn't completely change your appearance. Like you said, if we all start to look alike as a result of plastic surgery we will abandon the unique person we once were. It should be illegal in Korea to base potentially hiring someone or not on because of their looks and leaving their qualifications and skills aside. It is a clear violation of human rights and should be banned. I believe one of the main reasons why plastic surgery is so common in korea is because of the conformity they have when it comes to what is beautiful. Instead of learning to accept other types of beauties like we generally do in america they stick to certain characteristics of what they must aspire to in order to be beautiful. Things are changing, slowly, but still changing and korea is becoming more aware of other cultures so who knows maybe one day plastic surgery won't be so common anymore.
@carmens7284
@carmens7284 10 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't say that other Asian cultures are intense about plastic surgery like South Korea. I am an Asian living in Asia and as much as there are people who do plastic surgery, there are people who don't. And being hired does not come from your looks but instead your credentials. adriana12995 I agree that South Korea should make it illegal for people to get hired because of their looks because it's totally unkind. I do agree that Asians have a standard of beauty such as clear fair porcelain skin, double eyelids and the list goes on. But despite that standards, you don't see other Asian countries going insane with plastic surgery. So I don't think it's the standard alone. There must also be other factors that contribute to this insane plastic surgery culture. I hope you are right though. I hope things are changing in South Korea and that plastic surgery won't be so common there anymore. I hope that for the South Koreans sake.

carmen s Being hired does come from your credentials but like they mentioned in this video, if a company is considering hiring two people, who have the same qualifications, they will most likely choose the one with better looks. Looks alone won't get you a job but when it comes to an employer's decision, it seems that a more attractive person will be chosen over someone who has the exact credentials but is not as good looking. I also do think the're are others factors that contribute to Korea's obsession with plastic surgery like the media and idol's beauty. But really I believe the main reason is in fact their beauty standards. In most of Asia, and in many other parts of the world, fair skin, and big eyes are commonly known as features that one must have to be considered beautiful. However, in the rest of the world, aside from big eyes and fair skin, what is considered pretty is objective. Correct me on this if I'm wrong but I can't think of any other country that is as specific as Korea when it comes to what is beautiful. In korea you must have big eyes, double eyelids, fair skin, V-line jaw, small face, tall nose, small lips, long legs, very skinny body with S lines and X lines (which in my opinion don't look like curves at all) and a youthful complexion. Because of this unrealistic ideals that most celebrities have is why many look for plastic surgery. Sure there might be deeper reasons for this obsession but those standards are what contribute to it the most.

adriana12995 well it's just kinda sad to me that to differentiate yourself or to really secure a job, you need to get plastic surgery. Ummm....I think I disagree. The standards that South Korea have for beauty is something all Asians hold as standard as well. So, it's not just South Korea that is specific with what is beauty. In fact, the whole Asian community is.

eyelids are not really important thing at all. it's eyeball itself. human eyes are basically eyeballs. most people forget this simple fact that all kinds of races/ethnicities are different from head to toe. it's not just skin color. everything is different. koreans have korean eyeballs that are clearly different from other asians. let's be honest. most northeast asians are not really attracted to southeast asians. people think that's because of skin color. no it's wrong. it's because of eyeballs. ne asians are not attracted to tropical beauty. it's not about being good looking. it's all about being attractive. don't forget beauty is very subjective thing.

Good question! Maybe it's because idols are supposed to be perfect? Like, naturally perfect? Idk enough about Korean culture to say for sure, but this seems to be a good explanation due to the pressure that idols already get.
@SomechicknameAshley
@SomechicknameAshley 10 жыл бұрын
I can't say for sure, but I think that Nasuka Star is right about idols are seen as being perfect thing (supposedly). After all, they are supposed to be *idolized by people, so I think that they are criticized because their audiences may be in the mindset of, "this person is so much prettier and better so I should look up to them... wait, they're actually average and just got surgery?!" Once that kicks in, it's almost like the idol loses some of what make the special. They are no longer thought of as a heavenly-anomaly, but more of just a person who invested their wallet in their faces. I can see why they would though. Pressure from the media and public seems horrifically suffocating.
@ItsRosatron

Interesting question... I think in the end, people all still wish to be "natural beauties" and even though plastic surgery is widely known and accepted, people still PREFER the natural route. And I agree with NasukaStar that people expect celebrities to be perfect and not have to get anything done. If they got something done like everyone else, then it makes them seem like real people, God forbid. lol.

Oh how the times have changed. My grandfather is half white and half Chinese. Throughout his life, he was shunned by his community for not looking like the typical Asian. When the Communist party won control in China, he moved to Vietnam where the same thing happened. Nobody in Vietnam, except one family, would give my grandfather an opportunity to work or buy things from them. When the communist invaded Vietnam, my grandfather and my father moved to South Korea for a better life. Although they weren't as shunned or looked down upon, they were still picked on for their tall nose, green eyes, slim face, double eyelid, and other things that made them an anomaly. My father looks like a paler, taller, and more European version of Lee Min Ho, but always got beaten/picked on by the home room teacher for petty things back in the 80s. It wasn't until they moved to America while my dad was still in High School that these notions started to change. The features which my family was looked down upon for are now considered beautiful. I'm just amazed how drastic things have become in just a couple of decades. As for what EYK said, I can see how some people have plastic surgery in Korea to increase their chances of getting jobs. Getting jobs in Korea is very competitive. If you're looking for a midrange to high tier job, most companies look at appearances too. My dad was able to pay through college by modeling for Calvin Klein before becoming an accountant. He would probably get a job over an average looking person in South Korea even if they are a little bit more qualified. I don't mean any harm from that statement. That's just how it works. I will never know how they feel because I was blessed with the features that Koreans will consider beautiful, but I understand where they're coming from. If getting Plastic Surgery allows Koreans to stay competitive in the work place and be happy with themselves, then why not?
@Kimarey
@Kimarey 10 жыл бұрын
***** Yay! Chinese and double eyelids connection haha. Not many people realize how low girls' in South Korea self esteem are. It's normal for girls to feel inadequate, but not many people know how extreme it really is. In the U.S. the general message is to love yourself for who you are (If you're kind at least). Although not as drastic now, in South Korea, if you don't fit the ideal image, people will straight up call you ugly or tell you to improve yourself (tends to be directed to girls). They don't mean any offense, but that was the society they were raised in. Things are improving though. Hopefully in a couple of years, appearance won't dictate the work field as much as qualification.

this just shows that there is a flaw with the society itself and what they believe in. If looks is what gets you a job and not because of what your qualification is, then, it is sad indeed. The one thing I don't like about Korean culture is what you said, that they're not afraid to criticize your looks. I'm satisfied with my body, I like it. But in Korean culture, I would be considered fat, with a dent in my nose bridge, wearing glasses, having moles on my face... And it sounds like people wouldn't shy away from criticizing my every minor flaw. That can't be good for your self-esteem.
@aikaterineillt9876

But it is also not good to dismiss people who have legitimate concerns about their looks with the “everyone is beautiful” BS. It erases the fact that pretty privilege exists and those who don’t have it can suffer greatly on a personal and societal level. It is not anyone’s fault for being uncomfortable in their own skin, none of us choose our bodies or faces so we should be allowed to criticize them and change them. The problem is that plastic surgery is not perfect and it cannot fix everything, it is expensive, sometimes things can go wrong or just look strange and patients with poor results can be treated very poorly by everyone around them and by their surgeons. If you are satisfied with your looks then the criticism should not bother you, I would think it would only become bothersome if you agreed with it or if it was relentless.

Double eyelid surgery is less invasive and much, much quicker than having a metal contraption placed on your mouth for six months to straighten your teeth. But you wouldn't think anything weird at people getting braces.

Eat Your Kimchi In Germany it's the same when it comes to VCs. It has something to do with how much care did the person put into the resume, is the photo good (did they went to a photostudio instead of a booth ) did they were appropriate clothes to be taken serious. Since many companies that I work with get so many applications that are equally good for example, the photo shows that extra bit of care that you put in and that you want the job and sometimes if you look sympathetic, like are you a person who looks positiv, that other people will want to work with you. It used to be standard and you had to do it but nowadays you can kip the photo if you don't like. But it might lower your chances to get the job. It's all about being noticable in a big stack of applications. This goes for the whole presentation of your resume, not just your CV (How is the cover letter written, what kind of folder did the person use etc.)

Attaching your picture to a resumé is normal in Germany, too. I never knew you didn't do that in North America until you two talked about it (not in this video, but I can't quite remember which one it was). It's usually just trying to look your best/most professional/friendly though, not necessarily going from one studio to another to get the best picture.

I personally think plastic surgery is awful because idk, it makes me feel like I don't know the real them but anyways..... I wonder if any of these people who get this done wonder how will they look when they get older? It really is scary when you think about it because people are walking around literally with the same face, now that's creepy. It makes Korea seem like the Wal-Mart of plastic surgery.

This is ONE of the reasons I tend to prefer boy groups over most girl groups. Even though members of male groups may also have had some form of surgery, because men have a wider variety of looks that can be considered good-looking, you can have groups like BAP, Super Junior, SHINee, Infinite, EXO, 2PM, C-Clown, BTOB, B2ST, or U-Kiss, where everybody has a different look, but are all still considered attractive. Because what is supposed to be attractive on women in South Korea is rather narrow and restricted, it tends to be that same look, time after weary time.
@foreverhonest0
@foreverhonest0 10 жыл бұрын
One thing I have loved about boy bands is that a lot of them don't get double eyelid surgery! Yes, some girls keep their mono-lids too! It's natural and honestly I like the way it looks. I prefer a Korean guy who doesn't have double eyelids, it's more attractive in my opinion :D
@k-paidmt602
@k-paidmt602 10 жыл бұрын
That's how I feel. I really think the monolid is extremely attractive. There are some girl groups I like, and those tend to be the ones I think look the most diverse like, Brown-Eyed Girls, Miss A, and F(X), Secret, Sistar and I like Wonder Girls because of their more active dancing. I must admit to not being familiar with the names of all the members in the last three groups, though! Also, I want to find out more about GI (Global Icon). They seem pretty cool. At least they've got short hair! That is a welcome change! I think short hair looks more interesting than the typical boring, similarly-styled long hair.

not all koreans that have double eyelids have had plastic surgery. It is natural for some koreans. It's just sad that when foreigners see double eyelids on koreans it's automatically assumed that the person had plastic surgery.
@k-paidmt602
@k-paidmt602 10 жыл бұрын
I don't assume that. In some pre-debut pictures, some people look pretty much the same and it's obvious they haven't had anything done. I just don't see why some East Asians seem to think that a monolid is unattractive, or even ugly, especially on women. And I've watched enough idols - Kim SungGyu for example - get ridiculed on shows for having "small eyes" to know that some people don't like that look very much. But, like I said, men tend to be able to have a great variety of looks that are still thought of as handsome, while women seem to be far more restricted by the idea of what female beauty is supposed to look like.
@waterflowzz
@waterflowzz 10 жыл бұрын
Well it's a cultural thing like big boobs are found attractive by men in western countries big eyes are seen as attractive in korean culture. And the reason why you see girls that have double eyelids and men rarely do is because in korea double eyelids are seen as a feminine feature. I mean its ok for guys to have double eyelids but they think it doesn't look "masculine" at least for koreans.

This topic kind of reminds me of the "Uglies" book series by the author Scott Westerfeld. Where a future society at age 16 have plastic surgery to become more aesthetically pleasing and externally beautiful. This makes a world free of conflict(because everyone is the same), but in the process people lose what makes them unique, interesting, and externally beauty becomes what most people care about. Also in the series pre-surgery people are referred as "Uglies" and post-surgery people the referred as "Pretties".

Tati タティ yes, I have read the fourth book. they do change the main characters, but it's still an OK book. it does have more anime influences. But don't worry, the main characters from the prior books return as side characters. but the plot focuses more on popularity rather than beauty. but I still recommend it, even if you only want to know what happens to the original main characters when they get older.

I'm really shocked that apparently in the usa and kanada you don't have a foto of you in the résumé O.O I always thought this is totaly normal. In germany you do this when you apply for university/internship/jobs and you try to look good on it like when you're going to have an interview.. but I think people never would get the idea that they need plastic surgery just because they should put a foto on their application. And I don't think people get rated on their beauty but when you have piercing in your face, for example, you won't get a job where you represent your company...
@mueslikruemel
@mueslikruemel 10 жыл бұрын
Shoot Anonymous Yeah that's kinda the problem in Germany... honestly speaking I don't even know the official reason to why one should attach a photo to an application. But we all know it's because the employer can choose the person whos face he/she likes. >.> Allthough, to be fair, concern about this has been stated in public over the last few years and it's not a "must do" anymore but a "can do". With that said and despite the fact that a testrun by the Federal Anti-Discrimination Agency on how no photo on an application actually increases the chances for women and immigrants to be invited for an interview, it still is most of the time demanded and won't change within the next few years.

Funny that Simon should ask what would happen if a super hot woman and super hot guy (that both became super hot due to surgery) had a baby and it turned out to look like a swamp donkey. Recently there was a lawsuit in Korea that was exactly about this. The husband sued his wife because they had an ugly baby, and as it turns out, the wife had undergone extensive plastic surgery before she met him. The court voted in favor of the husband and allowed him to divorce his wife and escape his parental responsibilities.

tochjo772 Okay, let's be logical here. I heard it on a news report, so naturally, what I know can from that news report kinda how people know certain information because they learned it somewhere. So if the news report was wrong, I would therefore be wrong. However, even if I was lying, I don't see where the humor could be in that. Maybe it is just your paranoia.

I remember reading a article about a Chinese man that sued his wife (and won) because his baby born 'too ugly'. The wife had undergone over $100,000 in plastic surgery while in South Korea before they met and never told him. A photo of the family: migre.me/gZ8Wg

Actually, here in Switzerland it's absolutely normal and also kind of expected to attach a portrait of yourself to an application. If you don't do so, it lowers your chances of being called for the actual job interview extremely. So, having a good picture of yourself for application is absolutely mandatory.

It's a common misconception: "plastic" doesn't refer to the materials used in "plastic surgery". It's a latin word that means reshaping, modeling or artistic. That's why in latin countries kids take "plástica" instead of "art" (because let's be honest, a schoolkid's drawings aren't art) and they play with "plastilina" or "plasticina" instead of "playdo". If you think of it, plastics are a wide variety of recently developed materials that got to be called that way because of their plasticity features. So technically the correct translation from Korean into English would be "plastic" surgery.

I looked up stats from something called the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS). According to them, the US is #1 for most cosmetic surgeries performed. Korea is #7. So Korea is actually not particularly special for it. It's very ironic that there's such a stigma against it in the west, yet the US does it the most.

Maybe some ppl think boob job, liposuction and face-lift are less plastic(?) than double eyelids and nose job even though the procedures are relatively simple but the results are more obvious cuz they're on the face >.< So they easily overlook that their society have higher rates of plastic surgery and make a big deal about another country's. I don't know this is just my guess.

The way I see plastic surgery has changed a lot since I got into kpop and more in particular Korean culture. I used to be totally against plastic surgery and hated the idea of anyone getting it and would absolutely never even ink of dating someone who's had plastic surgery but after looking into Korean culture and understanding the Korean mindset more I'm actually ok with it now !? I mean I'd never get it myself because I just do t feel the need to I'm perfectly fine the way I am and I would still rather people didn't get plastic surgery but if someone wants to get PS I'm fine with it now, it wouldn't bother me and I wouldn't choose not to date someone because they had plastic surgery. Basically it's up to them what they want to do with their bodies.

I think it's because uou're a kpop fan. And being against PS for a kpop fan is weird, itslike insult the singers because fans have to love what their fav do, all of it. Youre still agaisnt psbut bc your fav did it you conviced yourself that ps was ok

Delian Jay no i actually don't care about people getting ps tbh it doesn't matter where they're from and if they're my biases or not, these people got plastic surgery for their own personal reasons and I respect that. Basically what other people do is up to them, if they want to get ps i don't care I just personally wouldn't choose to get any. I'm still not entirely open towards it and yes, I'm more accepting of my idols getting ps but i don't mind western celebs getting ps and I know plenty of them have had it anyway it's just a norm in the industry.

+Ilani Priskash If that were the case, they'd all be getting boob and butt jobs rather than double eyelids. No. Those are mostly ASIAN beauty standards. What Caucasian gives a hoot about having a double eyelid?? Or a softer and v-shaped jawline? Asians like softer, doll-like features. Really full lips aren't really a thing either. Nor do they like tanned skin. Those aren't Caucasian things. Hell, models in the Caucasian world look NOTHING like Korean beauty standards so I don't know where you came up with 'a whole nation that's been white washed'. Personally, as an Asian I think it's pretty damn horrible to want to change yourself so much, you look NOTHING like who you used to be. That's probably from having been born and raised in the U.S. though.

+Ilani Priskash You're wrong and I will tell you why. Let just say you're an Asian and you are applying for a job in some south east countries. If they put you in a line with other girls where they are all tan, except one girl with the most lights/white/pale skin, who do you think will stands out? Now let say if they all are tan, and all have mono-eyelid, except one girl with the double eyelids which enhance her face than the other girls with the mono-lid, who do you think is standing out? Most of the caucasians in western countries have pale skin/white skin/fair skin, and if one girl is tan who do you think stands out? who would they think special and different? The grass is always greener on the other side. You will most likely want to have something else the other person has or vice versa to make you stands or make you special. Most of us Asians have small eyes and mono-lids, by having double eyelid making them stands out. Most of Asian are and can easily tan, so Asian us want to be light skin. Why do you think most Koreans are pale or stand out if they are slight tan? The thing here is trying to be different from everybody but that different needs to enhance your looks, but since everybody knows your secrets and it catches on, now it's become a trend and a trend can last for so long that it's become typical. Why do you think people over in Korea are always praise if an idol is "NATURAL BEAUTY" because now that make them STANDS OUT/SPECIAL because you are "NATURAL" instead lost in the sea of PLASTIC PEOPLE. Hope that helps clear it out.

Actually Asian eyelids can be monolid or double eyelid. Majority of Asians with double eyelids didn't have surgery. Also, Koreans do generally ask to have "a nose like that celebrity" etc so that's why they end up looking so similar.

what i believe is that yes, you should love the way you look and you should be confident with that body, but if *you* really don't feel comfortable with your body, *you*, not someone else telling you to change, i feel like yes, go ahead with plastic surgery if it boosts your self-esteem. it's *your* body, and if you don't feel comfortable in your own skin, you can change. Complaining about your complexion won't solve your problem, you've got to solve the problem yourself :) I've always complained and cried over my weight and body size but now I realize I shouldn't mope about it, I gotta do something about it :D

Switzerland makes you attach a photo to your resume too. When they were teaching us how to make your own portfolio in secondary school the teachers told us that the companies look for capable people with a clean appearance...meaning: no piercings;tattoos...etc. First they look at you capability then if your "clean"...so regardless if your good looking or not they give the job to the person who's worth the money they'd pay them. xD
