Long wait is over !!! I have been desperate to find the affordable simple solution to make good stable pavements / approach roads to homes, schools etc in remote villages where big roller machines are just not possible to transport and people continue to walk through mud in rainy season even during dry season the paths are horrible to for cyclists... ! Thank you very much for sharing this simple step by step guide to make the machine at the place of need !

Welders can build lots of useful things and invent their own things to build...good job! You should always plug it into a GFCI outlet, these outlets protect the person from electric shock when used in damp and outdoor applications. The reversing feature is really good for narrow walkways. I really like the electric model.

Bravo! This is the kind of attitude we're missing sorely today. You need something? You go make it before paying for something that's more than likely going to break because it came from a production line. Sure, not everyone is able to make such a thing, but, there are others that can, and the money sure goes to better use to your local fabricator than big corp.

I've used my share of plate compactors in my life and gotta say awesome job! Very practical and definitely worth the effort. Let us know how it holds up in the long run..

Actually pulling back straight on a vibrating plate tamper that is clean on the bottom because of water spray or a fine spray of diesel will have a effect much like a steel trowel on concrete . The plate can also be spun easily while it hops and while stationary too as long as it is clean and damp on the bottom . Carry a thick stiff scraper to clean off any asphalt buildup that may leave blemishes. Spraying too much water on the hot asphalt can cuss it to boil and impede the travel of the plate tamper. Good Idea. When is the rechargeable battery version coming out? The gas powered ones with the big water tanks have a weight benefit. A useful tool for initial compaction on slopes exceeding 18-22 % . Rolling those while hot can cause them to stretch excessively.

With the electric motor You will have to be careful with and around water. Water is used finely sprayed to keep asphalt from sticking to the metal plate. A wet piece of cardboard thrown down in front of the plate will also work , better if sprayed with diesel or thin oil soaked into the cardboard. Oiling the asphalt will weaken the surface oils of the asphalt . I have had a hydraulic line break on a roller . Remove the most badly soaked asphalt and replace with some new uncontaminated material . Using a weed burner torch to cook of remaining oil will help too just do not overcook the asphalt and burn all of the oil out of it. That spot is still holding up well about 15 years later with no signs of spalling or failure. I have not tried simple green on the cardboard yet and We do use a biodegradeable release agent that works very well as s release and cleaning agent like a thicker version of Simple Green. Only use it on the cardboard that the tamper runs over. We do prefer to use the water from the mounted tank that sprays from a sprat bar mounted at the front .

Very cool. Can you put a big battery on it so you needn't a cord. Also can be water resistant then. I wanted a cordless compactor for some time. Of coarse you need to convert the power from ac to dc. Something like that. Even using a truck battery would work. I'm sure Milwaukee will built one of these one day. Better than breathing fumes. Well done on your engineering.

Hi! Great video!! Did u ever make a follow up on the plate compactor? And/or an in action video? Are you satisfied with the size of the motor? What is the total weight? We´re planing to convert a gas compactor to electric, I think it´s 90kg and the gas engine is 4hp. What do you think we need size wise? Mattias

I can't work out how that counterweight on the shaft makes the plate vibrate ? Does it hit something or is it just the rotating motion of it ?
@ghostwheelppk3 жыл бұрын
The weight is not centered, it is offset making the shaft unbalanced. If you think about the great pains that go into balancing mechanical devices: driveshafts, crankshafts, motors, etc. This is the opposite of that. The shaft is made unbalanced on purpose to cause it to vibrate and shake .

I too try to build something like that. But I don't understand why it's moving to side. And I think that working power is very low. My plate compactor is much bigger with 900W motor. When that has finished and really working I think to publish it.
@astridvanderniet17537 жыл бұрын
why did you want the axis to turn at 3500 rpm? is it the best frequency for compacting sand? i want to build something to shake up manhole covers (which are stuck because of sand and other stuff on the sides) but i'm not sure which frequency will work best to get the cover vibrating and to remove the sand.
@REDNIC797 жыл бұрын
the reason I chose that rpm is from looking at the pulleys on rental compactors. the gas motors usually run in that rpm range and the pulleys were close to 1:1
@astridvanderniet17537 жыл бұрын

Good and nice project but not so practical for every day people. Why I say this is because not everyone has welding machine ,workshop and by the time to build make your self compactor it cost some good money and you don’t find anytime you need an functioning motor in the garbage … so for all this trouble if you need the compactor for one time job you are better off of renting the compactor from Home Depot it cost less then $ 60/ 4 hours . So again I liked your project but not practical for everyday people for one time use …you got 👍 for the project and enjoyed watching it .

Hi.. I'm Mangal Singh, from Chennai, India.. Ain't a 1/2 HP, single phase, 1440 rpm sufficient for this ! The base compaction plate of 6mm thickness. The counter weight on the rotating shaft slightly heavy would be better.. These are my suggestions, hope you give me some advice regarding this....
@REDNIC797 жыл бұрын
yes that motor is sufficient as long as your weighted shaft spins at around 3500rpm. then make the machine weigh 150lbs. 6mm should be fine

I would say that type of belt, and with that much of a set to it, you're going to get a lot of vibration, and should try a link belt... but I somehow don't think that vibration will be a problem.
@REDNIC798 жыл бұрын
+jesondag what will i link belt do for me? i have never used one
@jesondag8 жыл бұрын
On most equipment, table saws, bandsaws, anything you want to minimize vibration, and noise on, a link belt will do that because it doesn't take a "set" like your belt has. I was joking that it's counter-productive, when the whole point of your machine is to vibrate ;-)

All i know for sure is, it sounds different from the welding shop's miller & lincoln 250's,also, i have made welds far beyond it's 1/4' capacity that have held even after extreme abuse.Also is it cheaper. what are your thoughts on these things,and what is your reason to run gas?
