Also, members of Zep have confessed, in interviews, to "borrowing" heavily from many other groups. Turn about is fair play. Plant found GVF delightful, so.... I would be thrilled if people just let it go. Enough, we get it. We can hear similarities, too....and differences, by the way. But to be critical of these guys for the Zep connection? Weird. Everyone borrows and remixes. That true from creative efforts to how we develop our personalities. When we create our music, act, and write our literature, elements are borrowed. Nothing is wholly original. Mark Twain even talks about this a great deal and confesses it. We even do it in less artistic endeavors.

So I'm 47, and I have been listening to Led Zeppelin a real long time. I also followed Robert Plant into his solo career, and how, going into the 80's it started to sound more like pop. But that was the direction music was taking. The first time I heard "Highway Song" on the radio I was like wtf. Was there a song I missed somewhere? It did not take long to realize it was not a Zeppelin tune, the DJ announced Greta Van Fleet, and I have been following them since then. I have never heard the words "tribute band" being used in the same sentence. I have not heard any negative comments coming from rock purists either. My thought, is if this guy sounds like Robert Plant, then that is the way it is. Should he deny his love of music because he sounds like someone else? Hell no! And the rest of the band is working with that. I don't know how many times in the past I have heard a musician borrow a guitar riff or a bass line from another musician. Yeah maybe they changed out some notes or maybe it sounds exactly the same. Greta Van Fleet is not sampling, they are not using lyrics, they are not plagiarizing Led Zeppelin. They are creating new songs using the same technics the Led Zeppelin used, and Josh Kiszka just happens to sound like Robert Plant. Its refreshing, actually.

Regina Roberts Zep ripped off blues lyrics. They created completely original renditions of songs where they did. By and in large, they composed a body of original work on their own merits. Everyone takes inspiration from others to create their music. EVERYONE. The problem with Greta Van Fleet is that they are in essence just flat out emulating Led Zeppelin completely. They are bringing Nothing to the table themselves. They are just a band created for the sole purpose of marketing themselves to 50 year old dads and their young daughters. Zeppelin took a ton of inspiration from blues legends, no doubt- but they didn't flat out sound exactly like any of them. Greta Van Fleet is a tribute band, nothing more. They sound like one singular band- and that's it. I'm just waiting for their version of stairway to Heaven- because that's when they will have jumped the shark and everyone will forget about them 5 years from then.

No matter how much closer they could sound to Led Zepp, or how deep people may go into analisis of their sound, for us rock fans, they are a band that have stepped heavily on the new waves. I'm 62 y.o., fan of those monsters of rock and I still enjoy young people music when they bring rock back to its roots. Cary Miller I agree. Bass has a more Geddy Lee sound than JPJ. I also thought the very first time I heard it that the voice is a cross of a pre-1974 Plant and Geddy Lee, but he inserts his own natural vocal distortion that neither Plant nor Geddy Lee have. I’ve seen them do a Zeppelin cover and it doesn’t sound like Zeppelin. Find a video where they cover Zeppelin and strangely it highlights that they aren’t just a Zeppelin sound alike. Kid can’t help what his voice sounds like. The guitar is just a 70’s sound and he is not the first drummer to channel Bonzo.
@CaryMillerOfficial5 жыл бұрын
@@tmt8425 I think it's more interesting that it channels Rush AND Zep. To me that makes this a hell of a lot more fun and unique. It doesn't feel like a ripoff to me because of it. Also you're totally right about Bonham. Grohl would be a great drummer to cite about channeling him, and he's only one of thousands. The vocal felt like he could hit high notes more like Geddy than Plant, but that his scream was more in Plants territory...the distortion of the scream was unique to him however. He can really sing (and I dig it). I just think this is better than people might think since it's not a straight rip.

@@henrybadd5866 - Hmm not sure about that. Not that I'm angry and wanna start a heated debate but that's kinda making your own false interpretation of facts. Plant and Bonham were friends and in another band as teens, but never met Page and Jones until Zep when they were twenty. Page and Jones knew each other from session work, but they were still in their 20's at the time when they started session work. They actually hit the ground running and were incredibly popular and successful from their first album, they just got even more popular from there. In 1968, when the band was formed, Plant was 20, Bonham 20, Jones 22, and Page 24.

@@IgnorancEnArrogance I agree no need to ever argue about anything. I always look at open discussion as opportunity to learn. You are right I was mistaken as to which bands story I was recalling. Even regardless of that. Weather GVF has created an explosion on the seen at this time in ROCK N ROLL's history, at this age in their lives is undeniable. They've already have established a footprint leading to be up there as one of the most memorable and best that ever graced the R n R seen. Or we would not even be talking about them. You sound as if you've enjoyed that period in time when R n R was at its best. Zep, Sabbath, Rush, The Stones, Who..... CCR, Skinnard and so on. Man I miss that way the music put our growing culture at ease and left a positive affect on us.. It started taken a depressive dive to some kinda weird punk. Then Metal was fun too, but even that took a dive to some kinda retarded grunge / beat myself up thing. Screaming matches. Late 90s it got a bit better. Anyway weather you like them or don't. You enjoy their music cause it reminds you of a time when the R n R was just like that.. I'm enjoying the hell out of it. In spite of the few that have negative opinions on them. Not one of them have ever had any massive effect on R n R. Many that do are like 3rd rate radio show host that don't even have a long enough career.

If it’s not a problem and not an issue stop mentioning it. They are great, try a concert, they are spectacular.

I’m a session guy in Nashville and I’m telling u they didn’t auto tune. Hear them live and u will hear the same and the show is very spontaneous so no backing tracks, and they rehearse relentlessly. Also watch rig run down and u will see how they do it which is is so simple, and he uses a bass Man U r obviously a true master at what u do, but I’m afraid this time ur wrong sir. That album was done on a shoe string budget reel to reel, even DAT. UR hearing REAL because it is.

If there's any sound worth emanating, it's the great groove of Zeppelin.....

I to had to stand back & listen, my first thought was wow they could do anyting Zeppelin! Having said that there's nothing wrong with that. Ever heard of whitesnake? They made a career being Zeppelin imataters before they found themselves. These guys play their own guitars own drums. No sampling, overdubbing, pretty straight forward rock band. I challenge anyone complaining to do better! I like them. If you think page&plant weren't emulating there influences then you don't study much history. I like them!
