For most artists he seems to take time to look at the lyrics and analyze them and for some reason he just didn’t bother to for this video? Granted; I don’t think lyrics are Greta Van Fleet’s greatest strength but there are some great lines from this album that he missed
@nonamebrand.15797 ай бұрын
the thing that kind of annoyed me is that he said the lyrics lacked substance but then continued to only glance at the actual lyrics. I don't blame him tbh because the first time I listened to the album I had no clue what he was saying and the songs all kind of blurred into eachother, but as soon as I listened to each song separately it became one of my favorite albums.

i so appreciate you giving this a shot! They are for sure a very fun band :) i do have to say though- the lyrics are actually an incredibly important part of the full experience. TBAGG is a super conceptual album. and while having to diving into a bunch of lore may not be to everyone’s taste, the lyrics are not to be dismissed.

troy i’m so serious right now you’ve gotta see them live. it is one of the coolest experiences ever (ESPECIALLY light my love). also while it’s not the most straightforward album it’s so much fun analyzing the lyrics and breaking them down. they love being cryptic because they want people to form their own meanings for their songs so that they mean something different for everyone. I’m really glad you listened to them though, and i highly recommend watching their red rocks performance from on youtube. also since you liked light my love PLEASE listen to flower power 🙏🏼

to me… it seems like greta van fleet is a live band more than anything. the boys are clearly talented and these songs feel like they were made to be played for large crowds hence the *many* guitar solos and josh’s booming voice. if i was at a festival and passed by this stage i would definitely stop to watch! however for me, sitting and listening to one of their albums all the way through like this just does NOT work. many of their songs don’t feel like the members feed off of each other and mesh, it feels like they all went into separate studios to record their parts, sat in front of a laptop to try and fit them all together, then when they were done said to each other “sounds cool” and went on to the next one. i think when a greta song works, it WORKS, but most of their stuff unfortunately is lost on me.

Almost all of the lyrics throughout Greta's entire discography are entirely well-written, with deep meanings and thought-out ideas. You just have to be willing to listen to the song for what it is end then sit and read the lyrics in their entirety. (From someone who studies literature and analyses text on a regular.) When I first listened to Greta, I fell in love with the sound and atmosphere of the music. What the boys stand for and what they give off to the world. Maybe a month or so after first listening to them I decided to make a Word document with all of their lyrics, from doing that I was able to connect so much more deeply with the music. I was able to slowly read all of the lyrics without getting distracted by killer vocals and their instrumentation. I actually find it really fun going back and reading their lyrics and finding those deeper meanings because there are a lot. Really significant ones as well. But that's just me. And maybe, sitting down and reading the songs in entirety without music in mind, would help to be able to understand the song and connect. If that's something that'd interest you. The guys have also spoken about how they personally like when you can feel/hear the falters and flaws in music (such as it sounding "messy". So a lot of the time it's intentional but I definitely get how if you haven't read/watched interviews, it does come across as unintentionally messy and somewhat careless. The guitarist, Jake, has also said that when he plays guitar, he likes to play really unreleased and without restraint, in his own words, he takes a more "animalistic" approach which can definitely be seen in live performances. Just another reason why it might sound messy. They also have a very distinct sound that is curated heavily for live shows. Their live shows are absolutely life-changing (Or so I've heard), I personally do not live in an area where I've been able to see them in person but videos from shows are always captivating. In addition, their live performance at Red Rocks Amphitheater is on KZbin and it's mind-blowing. Amazing gentlemen and talented performers. Obviously, everyone has their own opinion. Not denying that. Not every musical artist is for everyone. I just really love Greta Van Fleet. Their music, in particular their lyrics, and their overall message has changed my life. I just wanted to weigh in, and hopefully give some reason/explanation as to why you may not have enjoyed this album as much as you thought you would. Definitely try out their other albums and their double EP and see if any of them are more your style. edit: I'm also not sure if they ever branded it as a concept album. They said they were wanting to make "a soundtrack to a movie that hadn't been made" (But I guess that does kind of imply that it's a conceptual album). And, at least for me, I find all of these songs as cinematic and I think they can all be used for cinematic purposes. I find that all of the songs kind of tell a bit of a dystopian, hopeful vs hopeless atmosphere, which at least for me definintely paints a cinematic picture. Of course, if they did brand it as a concept album, let me know. But as far as I'm aware, they didn't.

This is such a great review. You were super honest and gave valid critiques while staying open minded. I totally understand the viewpoint listening to tbagg as the opener to gvf tho. This album is definitely a showcase of Jake on guitar whereas other albums like Starcatcher, showcase the keys and drums more. Tbagg is not a super in your face conceptual album. The band prefers to offer over-arching themes and leave the rest to personal interpretation, which is why it’s important to dissect the lyrics, but understandable that not everyone is gonna do that. I also think listening to it all the way through is definitely a lot for the ears so I always listen to it in chunks lol.

The highlights of this album are definitely Heat Above, Built by Nations, Broken Bells, and Stardust Chords imo. I agree the album as a whole is lacking structure and it doesn’t really have a flow to carry you through the album. They started much more zeppelin-esque with songs like Highway Tune and Black Smoke Rising and I think this album was them starting to feel out their own identity and style with their music. Their latest album ‘Starcatcher’ that you mentioned in the beginning is supposed to be exploring a more esoteric energy and bring in some southern influence to the music. I haven’t gone thru the whole album yet but I LOVED Meeting the Master so I’m interested to see how their sound and style mature as they get more experience in the industry.

i agree with the joshua bassett comment, especially Crisis, Only a matter of time, she said he said she said, just love, but also most of his songs :)

they themselves have described this album as more of a cinematic album, its not supposed to be a rock n roll album.

Honestly I really enjoy this band and TBAGG to me seems to be a cool album. However I think you should try listening to another rock band of this period: Rival Sons. Last year they released two albums that I'm loving, Dark fighter and Lightbringer. You will choose which one to listen to (just know that in my opinion they are really connected). Great video anyway, and pardon me for my grammar, if I made any mistake

They definitely went all in on this album. Every song has this big-sound-vibe with TONS of guitar-riffs and solos, which can make it all a bit bland when you listen to it alone in one sitting and I actually didn't like like half of the songs the first time I heard them. But then something changed when I saw them live. The songs get to have their own space and life on a live stage, and you just can't help getting totally sucked in. If you thought this was a bit much - which I totally understand - I recommend you give their new album a try. It's very different and not so 'big-sounding' - Josh doesn't scream as much for one thing...
