It is entirely autobiographical, all the people are real, the „waitress who’s practicing politics“ even was his first wife. When I was in high school, we had a student smoking lounge. You could smoke even in the hospital. Funny thing is, now that tell us how bad it was for us and that we were really stupid for smoking,,,,, but every other commercial on tv told us these things were good for our nerves and healthy for us. The same people who got us hooked now make fun of us. Giving up smoking took every ounce of strength I could muster. Smoked for 60 some years

My Great Grandmother was a nurse(she never smoked)but practically everyone smoked including ppl with lung conditions. And you're right doctors, nurses, families, smoked in the lounge. My Great Grandmother was always checking her white cotton gloves because all women wore them along with a matching hat before she put them on and then was careful to remove any ash on them.

They must've just switched to those (I still have a small stack of them! Lol), but in the early to mid-70s, a lot of restaurants (McD's included) had glass ashtrays with their logo on the bottom. I have at least 1 of those from McD's, Shoney's, and Jerry's! Ceramic/glass coffee mugs, too! Lol I smoked on a Greyhound bus & in airplanes, while grocery shopping, ...and in my hospital bed!! And even worse, my doctor sat and smoked while giving me results, etc. 😂

I do remember smoke filled bars when I was 21. I always hated sitting anywhere near the smoking section. I quit smoking in 2004 and even when I was a smoker I never smoked in my home and didn’t want to sit in a smoking section at a restaurant. I remember as a little kid that they had smoking sections on a plane, which was always was funny to me since you’re all trapped in the same tin can so it’s not like the smoke isn’t going throughout the rest of the plane. So glad we don’t deal with that anymore.

Checkout Only the Good Die Young that song was my life theme back in my 20's and 30's. My favorite line from that song was, "I'd rather laugh with the sinners than die with the saints. The sinners are much more fun." After we ordered at a restaurant back in the day, we'd either time our food getting to our table with the time it took to finish a smoke or get tired of waiting for it to come and just about the time you were about to light one the food would arrive. On every one of my birthdays since I can remember my mom would tell me the story about while in her hospital room waiting having contractions and about ready to give birth to me, she would be having my grandma lighting cigs one after the other for her and grandma didn't smoke. My grandma told me that after I was delivered, she went home from the hospital and had a nicotine headache for the rest of the day.

I remember being a little kid & hearing Billy Joel for the 1st time. He was such a massive influence on me. I was learning to play piano & I felt like all the cool kids were learning guitar. Discovering Billy Joel was a revelation & helped me appreciate that you could be a successful musician regardless of instrument as long as you put in the work & we’re determined. I think he was probably my initial reason for pursuing music as a career. You should check out his USSR Tour. It was ground-breaking because at the time it was such a huge deal for an American musician to tour in the Soviet Union. I admired him a lot for that too. Great reaction Kris to a great song. xx

Speaking of smoking indoors, when I was 15 and living in the UK, I went to the movies with two of my friends who smoked, and I sat between them. The girl sitting in front of me had her hair teased up in a bouffant style, with a lot of hair spray. When my friend on the left leaned in to get a light from my other friend, they lit her hair on fire. It didn't flare up, luckily, but burned like little sparklers, and smelled awful. We all three were blowing on it, when she turned around, glared at me and said, "I suppose you think that's funny".

Smoked in the smoking room on the Labour ward in hospital while in Labour with first child, 1994. This was Ireland back then. We were are mad as hell when in 2004 we became the first country to ban smoking in indoor places. Wasn't long before we became used to being able to breathe inside, especially in pubs. I can still see some old pubs here that no matter how many times they've painted the walls the tar still breaks through the paint.

I remember waiting extra long in lines when dining out for a “ non-smoking booth” which was nothing more than a little partition and some didn’t even have a glass divider. They were worthless. I couldn’t deal with smoke while eating, but I had no problem going into nightclubs where you couldn’t see 2 feet in front of you. I remember when the pubs allowed smoking. When I was 17yrs old, I bartended at an Irish Pub, (the old Sod) and anytime this song came on, you couldn’t hear it over everyone singing along. It would always give me goosebumps. You just brought back a flood of old memories. The smoke would kill my eyes, so after every shift I’d have to used Visine eye drops. But every time I got pulled over, (I drove like an idiot back then) the cops would think it’s because I smoked weed and would always search my car. 😂 Love the reaction videos!

I want to thank you for your raw, rough, and rugged as well as your great darkish sense of humor. I have never been able to get thru this song without choking up because it feels as just as autobiographical for me as for Billy who wrote it. I'm a Gen X'er who is old enough to remember ppl smoking everywhere, cigarette vending machines, no car a seat belt and car seats for children under 5 were a suggestion. Oh and drinking and driving was completely legal until the mid 1980's where I grew up, and everything was closed on Sunday.

I smoked in Bars, Airplanes, Movie Theaters, and just about anywhere that's when we were FREE!!! Back in the 60's it was a great times in the bars and pitcher of beer was a $1.25 when I was in college!

This is so nostalgic. Love it. And, yes, I remember smoking on planes. I can remember flying as a kid when one side of the plane was smoking and the other non smoking. And that just made no sense.

Billy Joel wrote the song "Shameless" that country music singer Garth Brooks sings. Whenever I worked at the hospital back in 1988,they had smoking and nonsmoking rooms at the hospital.

It's dope watching you make these videos bro. As a vocalist, I can completely understand the benefit to being influenced by multiple genres of music. It's universal. Like math. It kinda hurts my soul to know that we, as humans, tend to hate each other for our differences, when deep down we all have so much more in common with each other. ❤🎤

I'm not trying to comment on every video, however you just reminded me of how well you can sing as well. You've got some major talent, and sometimes it seems that your the glue to any collaboration you do based on your wide range of skills. It's really cool for me to get to see this youtube thing for you to start up, because your doing something we all appreciate. Your talking about influences and how music is so powerful regardless of the genre. There are a lot of great stories out there, and the most accessible ones are in music. Appreciate what your doing.

I remember even in the hospitals. I remember walking out of report smelling like I had been in a bar...Our patients use to smoke, we discouraged that greatly, especially after surgery.

Canadian here in Toronto, I'm old enough to remember when we could smoke in the office at work, bars, clubs, restaurants, every darn place. Then in about 2009, no smoking inside public spaces and we had to stand 9 metres away from the door (s) when we went outside to smoke...we still have to, to this day, it's the law!!!

I remember the smoking section in the plane was in the back. In my day when we went to high school , if you were 18 you could smoke in a designated area at school and outside the school grounds. I hate the smell of smoke ... always gave me a headache but i kinda miss the days when we could make decisions for ourselves without the judgement that comes now. Great song! Billy Joel... classic and so so talented. "Son can you sing me a memory.."

So appreciate you reppin KC... I defentely remember smoking on airplanes from when I was a kid. My sister and I sat in the front of the plane while my parents were in the back, in the smoking section.

I have a friend who is a novelist. I printed out the lyrics to this and gave them to him as an example of how few words it takes to write a great story. He was impressed. I remember smoking in airplanes, doctor's offices, college classrooms, and even hospitals.
