I like both the 3776 and the President lines and have a number of each. My Presidents include two blacks…one with silver trim and the other with gold…and a burgundy with gold trim. The nibs are soft fine, medium and bold. My most recent is the bold nib and it is among the smoothest writing of the over fifty pens in my cabinet.

Handsome pen. I'd be tempted to have that giant ball of tipping material honed into something interesting (to me), like a cursive italic or a two-nib tip.
@martinlebl6314 жыл бұрын
That is a big ball of tipping material. I think I would like this coarse nib myself. Might have to start looking at these used pen auctions.

Persistence pays off ! I've had a similar experience with a Montblanc 149, which I bought cheap, intending to resell. It took me a year of soaking, off and on, to get the ink to flow finally. I have kept it, simply because I put so much effort into the restoration and because it is 20 years older than my other 149.

Perseverance pays off. I still have a few pens that need more work to write consistently. The reward is worth the effort. Thanks.

I have tuned my nibs/pens enough now that i have gained confidence to buy pens that may not be in working condition. I used to buy only from sources that could eigther restore a pen or guarantee that it works. Now i feel the world of good deals has opened up to me! :) i bought some sacs and stuff, i cant wait to try restoring some more pens :) A great find you've got there.

I have same pen, same nib. Still trying different inks to see what I like with this nib. I agree that buying pre-owned pens is a good way to shop, as long as you know what to look for. Many of my more expensive pens have been purchased on eBay or Fountain Pen Network.

@@chrisrap52 I am a firm believer in it is ready when it is ready, especially when it is labor of love, and quality is more important than a schedule. Still I was impressed we got two in one day. That they arrived into the station at the same time. To extend the usual metaphor.

Hey Chris- sometimes the nib and feed are held in place by a glue. If you apply heat carefully with a hair dryer that can free them up.
@chrisrap524 жыл бұрын
I have a few pens with distorted section from heat. I am not good with that. I may use hot water but no more than that.
@martinlebl6314 жыл бұрын
@@chrisrap52 Heat is tricky. Lot of modern electronics like phones and tablets are glued together, and similar trick is used to open them. However as you point out one has to have real knack for it as it easy to melt/distort plastic parts, melt solder, damage parts, esoecially some ICs and batteries. So I would only use that as last resort, unless you are practiced in that approach. (I mean if the pen is a write off otherwise, then there is nothing to lose, but I would try everything else first.)
@MrAndrew19534 жыл бұрын
I had problems like that with some pens and was told to soak the nib section overnight or long. Monteverde Fountain pen flush is useful. I've never owned or used a double broad.
@martinlebl6314 жыл бұрын
Good cleaning can do wonders for a pen. Even up it's rating by quite a bit. I used my Visconti Opera for over a decade without really cleaning it, as it never dried out as I just refilled it when the ink was running out. Eventually, it did start to have issues, so I spent couple hours flushing it, and it has been writing like new ever since. Of course a throughout flush is a PITA, as it does take a while, but if you like futzing with pens, then it is all good. Most of my other pens do need cleaning more often, but then they get cleaned more often as I do that when switching ink. The Opera always has the same ink, so that wasn't the case. Used to be Noodler's Black, and now it is Noodler's Heart of Darkness, so really just more of the same, but slightly newer formulation with few extra features over the old standby.
@chrisrap524 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the detailed cleaning suggestion. I also am a cleaning friend every once in a while. I have 10 pens waiting for a thorough cleaning.
@martinlebl6314 жыл бұрын
@@chrisrap52 Hear that. Always easier to do a who batch. Clean them and ink them. Combine the chore with the fun.

Do you worry about marring the pen barrel by posting during use?
@chrisrap524 жыл бұрын
I seldom post. The plastic used for barrel seems scratch resistant. I show posting as some must post.
@peterpuleo29044 жыл бұрын
I think to get a better comparison between two nibs, it is better to use the same ink--just my opinion.
@chrisrap524 жыл бұрын
I agree but there is only so much time I invest in videos. I use what ink is in the pen. I'm not changing inks for a video and I as like a lot of inks most pens have different inks, same ink is boring for me. I believe it is better to show with different inks than to not show at all. Thanks for watching.

I've also had my eye on the Platinum C nib, though in the 3776. Thanks for this specialty review. How did you go about getting the Bock BB? Have you reviewed it? As always, good info. I'd also like to mention that I recently bought two Kaweco BB's and both are juicy and baby's-bottom-free.
