I personally do not think I will be harvesting my own P.G.M.'s, and will allow my friend to do what I collect, and will split the gains in a fair percentage... Ah, maybe down the road, as my experience comes up, I may attempt this avenue... Anyway, this video, although created all sorts of anxiety for me, was extremely satisfying to watch... I just mention, it does put into perspective, or why platinum is so costly, never mind the rarity of the element itself, as it really doesn't want to give itself up with out putting up a fight... For the 174ml, being 20ml per gram, is that particular to one or the other you add? HCL or peroxide or the combination of both? is there a ratio of acid to peroxide? I suspect if too little acid is used to too much peroxide surely the platinum wouldn't be fully dissolved?

How do I extract platinum group metals from ore and then how do I precipitate them. I have read some different things like crush pan roast pan dissolve in AR then precipitate each specific metal using different chemicals. Which chemicals are used to precipitate rhodium platniun and palladium I am about to start getting ALOT of VERY high grade ore containing gold silver platniun palladium and rhodium as well as some of the base metals.. any help would be appreciated.

I think it's about the same. Powder Pt will dissolve much faster than the solid metal.

I rinsed the black powder well before drying it out before I added the HCl. Maybe some nitrosol compounds remained in the black powder and provided the oxidation. It's an enigma. Platinum group metals do some strange things.

Very cool, sreetips! It was a lot of work and time spent on the recovery and refining of the platinum button. It's worth $71.62 USD at today's spot platinum price (5/12/22 @ $10.70/gram). Well done, Sir, I am always captivated by your chemistry experiments. As I've previously mentioned, I am on the lookout for sterling silver to make the silver shot, and set up my first silver cell. It seems like the logical place to begin my journey into the recovery and refining of precious metals. Two months ago, I was totally ignorant of all of this. I had no idea how any of this was done. I now feel confident that I could do some of these experiments myself. I'll be starting slowly, and building as I go along with each experiment. I'm a firm believer in "safety first" and I'll install a fume hood and buy all of the personal safety equipment to protect myself and any observer, before I attempt any of these experiments! You are setting a fantastic example in personal safety, sreetips, and I take your example to heart.

The critical concentration is 20ml of liquid per gram of metal. Concentration above or below this level could cause problems when precipitating the metals.

I hate, hate, hate refining the Platinum group metals! Though i had to learn to do it as part of the business, i nearly never refine any unless it's absolutely necessary! I get it isolated from other solutions and drop it with zinc. I then clean the zinc drop up with hcl til the metal is about 99%. That's Platinum black and as far as i go with it. The metals in the PGM group are such a pain in the ass to refine, unless you are dealing with a lot on a full time basis it's not worth it financially, but knowledge wise it is an asset. Business model wise mine comprises about 70% gold processing and 30% silver. Lou does all my PGM metals!

I saw one fellow that does this and he uses glass jars as in big pickle jars and Mason jars,, Is that Feasible? One other thing, I saw a video on the extraction of gold, He used iodine, Have you ever heard of this and/or done this? What is your opinion on using iodine?

I buy the beakers on eBay. I use Pyrex or borosilicate glass vessels. I don't think pickle jars can take the heat, they'll break. Iodine will dissolve gold, but I've never tried it.

Great videos very detailed and interesting. The platinum you recovered if I'm correct was from scrap catalytic converters in previous video. The catalytic converters in that particular video are aftermarket and not original the precious metal content in them would be far less than original converter. I have a company that purchases converters full time. This is not a criticism just for your information. Your recovery would have been a lot higher if they were original converters. Great video

A fantastic series you've produced here. Many thanks. VERY educational. In fact I think I've come to the conclusion that Pt and Pd are just not worth the effort for me. I'll stick with Au/Ag. But this does leave me with a problem that I'm not sure what is the best way to proceed. I have a little under 300gm of Pd salt I dropped with DMG. Rough calculation would tell me around 90gm Pd so definitely not something I can just let sit and forget about.. All filtered and dried but still just sitting there. I'm really torn as to how best proceed. Should I calcine or redissolve in AR? Should I do the HCL & H2O2? What about dissolving in ammonia? I'm THINKING about dissolving in HCL and H2O2, filter the life out of it and then drop with zinc. Wash with HCL and then what is left "should" be pretty pure. But I'm so fart out of my comfort zone here and I think I just don't have anywhere near enough experience to delve into these metals.

I've done this material. I dissolved in AR and experienced runaway reaction that spewed hot acid everywhere. Once the salt was in solution I cemented the metals out on zinc - there was much platinum in that material as well because the DMG brings down platinum as well. Once cemented and excess zinc removed with HCl, I dried the black powder to get a weight then dissolved in HCl and h2o2 to achieve a solution that was 1 gram of the black powder per 20ml of solution. Then I added ammonium chloride to drop the platinum. I filtered out the platinum salt and bubble chlorine gas into the palladium to convert the palladium to ammonia soluble salt of palladium. I dissolved the brick red ammonia soluble palladium salt in 10% ammonia, filtered, and reacidify with HCl to get the beautiful canary yellow pure palladium salt. Then burn the canary yellow salt in a fused Quartz dish. I'd love to get my hands on that much Pd salt, it would make a great video!

The bulk of t he Pd has come from scrap electronics so I don't think the Pt content would be high enough to warrant the full processing, and frankly the idea of platinosis is enough to keep me away from messing with it. But what a world we live in when Pt contamination is an actual problem to be overcome. :)

When refining palladium, ammonium chloride must be added, even if no platinum is suspected. The ammonium chloride facilitates the production of the brick red ammonia soluble palladium salt during the chlorine bubble. No ammonium chloride and the chlorine bubble won't work. That's when I discovered that DMG will drop platinum (not a well known fact in the refining community). Since it was palladium dropped with DMG I thought that ONLY palladium would be present. But when I added the ammonium chloride I was astonished to see platinum precipitating, a lot of it. There is no substitute for experience. I have a gulf ball size round piece of metal .it is platinum I believe. It weighs about 1 and three quarters of a pound . It is very heavy for it's size ....probably because it has been smelted so it is more pure and it is about the right density about 21 .Now the native or natural platinum nuggets I have are about 14 in density .. .the loss in density is probably due to the other base metals and other pgm's in them. My question is this,...the ball I have that has been smelted, do I have to smelt it again to make it even more pure, or is smelting it once enough . Also where do I sell something like almost 2 pounds of platinum, and do I need to certify it and have it stamped, or can I sell it like it is?

At 51m40s it could be worthwhile to rinse the fused quartz dish out using some dry borax powder. Then adding the rinses to the crucible, then adding the straight borax to cover the whole mound.

After watching this excruciating series on stock pot refining (Loved it) I can't help but wonder if this process could be at least semi automated with a little plumbing skill and the reactivity table, I am not a chemist and have never refined, but what if the stockpot was set up as a series of interconnected buckets (or glassware) the first one containing silver and set up with an s trap at the to p to flow into a bucket containing gold and so on up to aluminium? I know you mentioned that one of your viewers tried cementing with less reactive metals like silver and it didn't work, but wasn't this most likely due to not leaving it for long enough? Wouldn't this yeild a series of powders that required much lesss refining and chemicals?

we have about 200 grams of platinum lemel left over from jobs.we really need to start refining our own rather than selling it back to scrap and loosing about 70% on the $. I used to do this when I was an apprentice and it exploded on me once when I got the mix slightly wrong. its serious stuff

Refining platinum is nothing like gold or silver. It's much more dangerous. A fume hood is an absolute must. Platinum dissolved in acid forms a compound that is of the highest toxic skin sensitizers known. you would be better off finding a reputable refiner to do it for you. Or just sell it as-is.

PTFE (Teflon) coated iron, there's a rotating magnet in the cooker base that moves it. PTFE is pretty much immune to acids, the biggest problem I can see is if the covering gets cut or cracks, the iron is going to become a major contaminate for whatever is in the beaker at the time.

Hello professor Professor, I had a aqua regia acid containing platinum and palladium I added ammonium chloride to it to precipitate platinum, but because the pH of the aqua regia was zero and it was very acidic, the precipitate was dissolved again, then I added SODIUM HYDROXIDE to the solution and the pH became 4 and the aqua regia was heated and a mustard yellow precipitate was formed, which was dissolved in water. It dissolves but does not dissolve in distilled water and ammonium chloride Is this the platinum deposit?

Not familiar with peroxide test. Get some in a test tube. Hit it with hot AR. Then test with stannous. That’s what I’d do if it were mine.

I found a 5.5lb nugget/rock with my metal detector and I believe it's platinum or palladium because metal detector shows it's a gold metal group by number and a jeweler told me there's gold in it but the main color of the rock looks like palladium and/platinum with streaks of that rainbow colored palladium metal and shiny like platinum. Would you know by a picture of the rock?

Hello and courtesy Dear Professor, I have a soil that has palladium and iron. I dissolved iron using dilute sulfuric acid. Now, I put the soil in an Aqua regia solution and heated it until the palladium dissolves. Is it necessary to neutralize nitric acid to precipitate the palladium in the acid? Can palladium be deposited with zinc sheet? What should I do to purify before melting?

Palladium is soluble in nitric acid. The only one of the six sister metals that is. I like to use DMG to separate the palladium.

@@sreetips Professor, DMG is very expensive in Iran. There is a little gold, a little platinum and a lot of palladium in my soil. I want to use Aqua regia acid and then use the zinc sheet for settling, should neutralization be done before using the zinc sheet? Master, I have been following you for 5 years from Iran and this is my honor.

What would be nice is to know from how many kilo of Silver sterling you get that amount of Pt...as well as Au and Pd...I suppose it's hard to keep tracking. But how much you guess?
