For anyone wondering what the chords become when you move them two frets up from the root: 1. Cmaj -> Dmaj add9add11 2. Amaj -> Bmaj add11 / A 3. Gmaj -> A7 add11 4. Dmaj -> Emaj / D 5. Emaj -> F# 7 add11 / E All of these are lydian chord sequences (major 1 to major 2) and the dreamy sounds are added by the added 9th or 11th from the open strings. Moving from a major 1 to major 2 emphasizes the #4 in the scale which is the major third of the 2 chord.
@Cavie19743 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the explanation. The video sort of implied that you're playing the same chord when moving up two frets when that is not really the case.

That does sound really nice. Would the cord be the same cord or a different cord when you slide down? Is a C a C or a D or some more complicated cord. How do we know. Or does it matter? Thanks
@alantucker95443 жыл бұрын
The chord changes. When you move down the fretboard with the same patterns and bar the open strings, it moves from A to B to C and so on depending on how many frets you move.
@JohnShepherdMusic3 жыл бұрын
If you move a C chord up 2 frets (one whole step) it becomes basically a D chord; an A moved up becomes a B chord etc. Dylan was a huge fan of using the C-shape D chord. Watch Girl From the North Country for an example.
@HappyGoLucky_033 жыл бұрын
It will be a complicated Chord. For example, if you had barred it while moving, a D would become E after moving two frets. But here the E will still have an open D string, which is flat 7 (7b) sound. Similar to other chords.

Great video! I had been experimenting just recently in fact with this type of thing. Mainly actually with the two chords mentioned here. I took it down the neck 3 times. Granted, D got more difficult the closer the frets got together, but made the A more easy. For some reason it never occurred to me to try this with the C chord. I bet it gets easier to make the C chord shape the further down the neck you go. Thanks for this video! I've been playing a while, but still have trouble with chords. This was a nice reminder to give this a try with other chords besides just the two I was using.

Most guitarists play by ear and are not as interested in theory, but rather what the chords sound like when writing a tune. So what are the names of the new chords?
@hughcdavies3 жыл бұрын
Think what root note is 2 frets higher than the root C. It's D, it's a D Major with an added 7 and suspended 4th. The unfretted G is the suspended 4th and the unfretted E is the 7th. Try the EMaj shape on the 6-7th frets and on the 8-9th. Been playing this sort of stuff for over 3 decades. Simples to me, just try moving each shape and see what sounds nice. Then add a hammer on or two.
@MrJDJ0013 жыл бұрын
Moving the C up two frets gives a D add 2 add 4 - it's not a suspended chord because the 3rd is still there, and it's not really a 9th or 11th because there's no 7th. The A shape you could think of as B add 4 with an A bass, or A6 add 9 #11 (no 3rd). The G shape you could think of as an A11. The D shape is an E7 or E/D. The names aren't really important though.
