The O vowel does apply to trumpets, and it's considered masterful to be able to play in the upper register with that technique. I do see what you are saying though, it is a useful technique to get a feel for what the note should be. From there, cleaning it with a progressive O vowel will lead to some beautiful upper register playing. Great video!

@BlaiseBowman7 жыл бұрын
Never thought about it that way. Good way to describe it!
@IonaCarr7 жыл бұрын
I think Blaise said the music is more important than playing high. Very true. If you are playing lead in a band, you may have to play high for much of the time = small mouthpiece, if you are playing supporting parts, say 2nd or 3rd trumpet you need really solid low notes including bottom C and below, then small mouthpieces generally do not do well - thin shaky notes - playing low = larger mouthpiece. Most players find a mouthpiece that suits their established role in their band but some carry two mouthpieces to cover a wider range of possible situations. It is the music that matters. . [BTW Donald Trump is well known in the UK for blowing his own trumpet but you would be unlikely to spot this T shirt in a band over here.]

WHICH TRUMPET MOUTHPIECE IS BEST? CHECK IT OUT kzbin.info/www/bejne/aKKnimaAiaanpqs 🔥🔥🔥 CLARIFICATION: you can play high on a big mouthpiece, though it is WAY more work, and in most cases, not worth the effort. I can play Double C on a toilet bowl, but it will tire you out really fast, and requires a lot more effort. On heavy-lead gigs that last 2+HRS, where nearly everything is above the staff, I use a small mouthpiece; it's the most EFFICIENT tool for the job. For orchestral stuff, I play on a larger mouthpiece, like the rest of you; again, because it's the most PRACTICAL tool for the job, I'd bottom out trying to play Tannhauser on my lead piece, and I'd overwork myself playing Maynard and Goodwin charts for 2+HRS on my orchestral piece. ALL of the pros accept this; they put their EGO aside and use the right equipment for the job, knowing they could be replaced at ANY minute from a bad performance. To avoid that chance, they optimize equipment and minimize the chance they'll screw up and get cut. That's reality. You wouldn't call a Symphony guy a cheater for playing a C trumpet on piece written for Bb just because it's easier to play. At the end of the day, quality of the performance is the only thing that matters. Get over yourselves; accept reality before it's too late. LIKE for visibility. Cheers, BB.

@TommyCrock7 жыл бұрын
Nick try a 14a4a Yamaha mouthpiece. Also, try not to strain when you play, be relaxed but firm with your embrochure. Plus, think of the word, "wood" when you want the correct embrochure when you play(especially for high notes). Lastly, and this is my opinion, do NOT always rely on equipment to get the job done. Good luck to you my friend.

Switched from a shilke x3 (very large bore open feel with reverse lead pipe) to standard pipe Wayne Bergeron Yamaha (8335la). Using a GR 65sz as well as occasionally a bobby shew lead. There seems to be a good bit extra resistance to me in 8335la but to some extent it helped extend my endurance (stops lips from intruding mp) with around the same range to around F and dub G. But the shilke has a brighter more open, but perhaps spread, sound. Any thoughts on which one to continue on I progress on tpt or another lead horn. The issue I am having as of now is stopping my lower lip from curling inward as I ascend (downstream player). As a dude in a college section of 70 tpts with a good few drum cops and hardcore music majors playing double Cs every stand tune and ripping solos out of their ass in the show I could use some help from my equipment. Btw love your videos you def get the millennial lead post-Maynard mindset lol.

Hey Blaise, so I like my 3c because the tone I get out of it is solid and my range is solid for the most part. If I were to get a smaller mouthpiece wouldn't that be like starting all over again tone wise and range wise? Also if I were in a concert band setting should I use the 3c or whatever higher mouthpiece
@BlaiseBowman7 жыл бұрын
No. Small mouthpieces are way better once you adapt. You can actually get a BIGGER sound out of a small (note not shallow) mouthpiece if you learn to play on it properly. The XPiece is the best mouthpiece: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aKKnimaAiaanpqs

Genuine question though Mr. Bowman (assuming that is your last name no disrespect) what is the point of holding the horn in the fashion you suggests, is it to innately limit pressure by the usage of the hand?

You can play high on a big mouthpiece.. But it fatigues you quicker. Shallow mouthpieces don't make you player higher, it just makes it more efficient but it does this at the expense of the tone. You really need both types of mouthpieces. Rest of what you said was great!!

Thanks last month I could not play a note and now I can play a high c

Back in the early 2000s I would use a Warburton 3SV mouthpiece with a standard 6 backbore. That 3 size rim is the equivalent of a Back 1 1/2 size rim (I got a double teardrop upper lip). It took a lot of work but I was able to murder on the high Cs before I knew it. That C cup swirls the air around in your mouthpiece like a drain, you want a V cup or Semi-V cup in order to easily make those notes come out big.

Blaise Bowman, I have the same mouthpiece, also Lynn's XPiece and Reversible Rim for training. Even better, Lynn has designed his own professional large bore trumpet, called "LynnZhorn." I stopped over at his place in Vegas last July and spent a lot of hours on the prototype. Unbelievable!! So I ordered one...should be here the second week of July. And you won't believe the cost: only $1,300 plus shipping!! Best horn by a long shot I've ever played. Lynn said the same thing about his own experience on it. Yes, Lynn is definitely the man! He walks the talk. And I could tell by your video that you have been influenced by his mentorship too. Good on you, and best to you.
