I stumbled upon these concepts by accident after working on my two-handed shuffle using push-pull technique in each hand. Push on the “lets” and pull on the “ones”. Accent the ones incorporating the elbow motion and, as Daniel Glass always says, focus on the “ups” (aka the “lifts”). Do it for a time at 40 bpm, 60, 80 and so on until you max out. Do that every day for a month; then try your doubles! ShaZAM!

Great tutorial!! Just to throw another approach at this, I've found that if you practise doubles with an inverted sticking i.e. RLLR/RLLR/RLLR/RLLR (as sixteenth notes in a bar of 4/4), it seems to be more natural to pull that accent out of the 2nd stroke, as that stroke now becomes the downbeat as well as the 'and' between each of those beats.

So inspiring and interesting to listen and watch your videos!! You give confidence! Kinda old now and never played in a band. Gave myself a Sonor kit as a 50y-gift 13 y's ago, mic'd my drums and learned to play fx Black Dog, Fool in The Rain, Walk This Way Rosanna.... but never really understood how to build my own drumming. Could listen to you for hours and everything is just exciting!! Thanks a Million! Best wishes from Sweden 😀

Hi Rob I’ve only been drumming for 9 months I’m 45 years young As soon as I got my left hand doing the (2nd upward accent) going it got way better I kind of practiced hitting the pad in a dropping kind of motion too and then the 2nd stroke when I got the drop but right if that makes sense Anyway I absolutely love how you do your vids I’ve learned so many different techniques and thank you very much Think I deserve to buy myself a T or Hoodie 🤜💥🤛

Try this (very slowly at first): Do a pick up stroke and lift everything as normal Moeller pick up, tip leaves last, until the stick naturally ends up at the "hammering a nail" position (stop there a second). BUT when you bring the stick down KEEP THAT SHAPE (but don't LOCK) and let the whole arm drop from the elbow. Do not use any wrist, do not assist the elbow to drop in any way. Your fingers & wrist will move naturally anyway. You can lead with either the pick up or the drop stroke for the different accented beat. I suppose I ought to make a video but for me this saves a lot of strain on the tendons due to wrist up & down strokes. Just one wrist up stroke is needed (yes it DOES move both ways but the wrist is PULLED up rather than PUSHES up). Basically Moeller up hammer down. The static wrist is TERRIBLE at blood flow and the tendons are crowded meaning that finger work leads to RSI. Thus fast typist pool girls 200wpm using fingers get RSI but one finger journalists and me don't because MOVING THE WRIST pumps blood into the hand. Thus the tendons don't get starved of blood flow and then swell and hurt. If you want warm hands don't rub your fingers. Rub your wrists and move them.

I like the gear analogy. Balancing power and speed is surely the biggest hurdle in double strokes.. However I think of the gears where the shoulder which is slowest but most powerful is first gear, elbow a little faster but still more power than speed second gear, wrist is less power but more speed third, and fingers are least powerful but most speed fourth gear. Thanks for the expanded limb awareness for executing doubles. Dig it!

I have a video suggestion. So I’ve always been used to playing drums with double mount Tom. And when I get on a single mount Tom kit it’s like I’m lost as to how to make productive drum rolls and fills because I’m used to having double mount toms. Maybe a video on how to make cool productive fills and drum rolls with single mount Tom.

Hi Rob , when ya do that catch an release thing , is that with both hands ??? Obviously when you’re using your traditional grip you’re not doing anything like that right ? And when you say to accent(pull them out)on the second stroke , do you mean the second bounce on each hand after each bounce??What exactly do you mean , have you done a video showing in detail the mechanics an how by doing it that way it will progress into solid technique ??? PS Thanks in advance , I love your videos , and am working on 3 cool exercises for independence , got the first 2 down almost got #3 pretty cool for sure !!!!😊 thanks sir

Sir how much does the tuning/tightness of the drum head play in relation to working the bounce off the head ? tuning low not much bounce, but tuning up/ tight would be more bounce coming back off the head ? I guess you would have to play with the tuning to achieve "your" sweet spot / bounce ???? just a thought.
