Didn't realize Roy was that young when he died only 52 years old. I'm 66 now and that's young, believe me! What a voice and in my humble opinion, the Wilbury's album stands the test of time. Lot's of people didn't appreciate what it took to make this happen at the time but 30 plus years later with 3 of the band members "traveling" on, to the other side, God bless em. It was special indeed! Give a listen and tell me I'm wrong. A happy brotherhood of musical talent and expression and having fun. Being a professional musician myself, I get it and I love it. Plus we've always got a music critic of sorts, to sort it out for us, but you know what, I do really appreciate it or else the Wiburys may have been forgotten or lost to the annuls of time. Via Con Dios my friends. Enjoy the moment!!!

Despite what I am going to call the negative comments on any of the Wilburys' music, members.....the first time I heard this band....I fell in love with the MUSIC. Then I found WHO the Wilburys were .....that was that. I matters NOT that there was no "heavy hit" on Vol. 3....they're voices all blended together perfectly, a bunch of guys who got together and made wonderful, fun to WATCH music. Leave 'em alone....wonderful music to listen to.

Hard to believe that the Wilburys came together 20 years ago. I agree that the term “Supergroup” is over-used but that the Wilburys certainly meet the definition more than any to carry the moniker. Jim Keltner has been a premier rock studio drummer who has played with the Whos Who of Rock Musicians and Bands ever since 1970. By all accounts, he is not only one of the very BEST---he is a very likeable, and unassuming fellow. Along with Ringo Starr, he played on many of George's tracls from his first post-Beatles album, All Things Must Pass. He gave a moving tribute to George after his death Nov 29, 2001. He was a very dear and close friend of George';s. Yes----he is the SIXTH WILBURY! Glad you mentioned it, Max. Good Catch!

The band chose the lead singer based on the main writer of each song. Dylan wrote “Dirty World”, “Congratulations” and “Tweeter and the Monkey Man” which was why he sang lead. Roy Orbison didn’t write any of the songs. Jeff Lynne wrote “Not Alone Anymore” for him. They weren’t focused on what the critics and the public might think. They were simply enjoying making music together.

Thanks for all the collage , but you didn't catch the irony of what the Wilburys portrayed. They weren't trying to be the band with one strong vocalist, it was a collaborative project that ended up being extremely successful and fun for the band. Your comments about Dylan's vocals show that you really, really, really don't understand the concept of the Wilburys.

Indeed, the guy commenting the Travelling Wilbury's here, obviously feels threatened by Bob's charisma, immense authority, and ego-less-ness. Bob's voice goes right to the soul, it cuts deep and hits you hard. Not everybody is able to bear so much truth ( Nietzsche). I know Bob Dylan as a very gentle soul with a great heart. Trying to diss Bob only says something about the ego of the guy who commented this collage, and nothing about Bob or the Travelling Wilbury's🙏🙏

Some facts about Jeff Lynne (ELO)...First, he is a very humble man, simply because this Music Genius is not interested in fame, the limelight, and money, he just loves to create great music. Jeff Lynne is one of the most versatile musicians ever, this is why he is considered by his peers to be among the greatest. He didn't stick to one style of music because, after decades, it gets boring. Jeff has done progressive Rock, Symphonic Rock - Pop, New wave, and Disco. Everything he does turns to gold. He even flirted with Country music. From 1972 to 1986 (During 14 years) Jeff Lynne's Electric Light Orchestra has had more top 40 hits than any other group in the world...51 years later they still play in sold-out Arenas, festivals and Stadiums. During Jeff Lynne's ELO 2019 Tour, many reviews agreed in saying they are the best live Classic Rock Band in the world still touring and Jeff Lynne is a Music Genius( From Forbes Magazine and the Washington Post). ELO is in the Rock Hall of Fame. Lynne is on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame and Birmingham Walk OF Fame. Jeff Lynne’s ELO won the Best Classic Rock Band plus Lynne won the best Songwriter award ( ASCAP ) in 2019 for his fantastic contribution over the years. In October of 2020, Jeff Lynne has been made an officer of The Order Of The British Empire for his extraordinary contribution to music. He previously has received three Ivor Novello Awards, which celebrate songwriters and composers, including the award for outstanding services to British music. He created the best Super Group of all time with his best friend George Harrison, The Traveling Wilburys. The Legends in the Music Industry call Jeff Lynne the best overall Musician ever and a Producer Extraordinaire. Jeff Lynne has written and produced many hit songs for music legends like George Harrison, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty, Joe Walsh, Brian Wilson, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Bryan Adams, Aerosmith, Del Shannon, the Everly Brothers, The Beatles, and so many others...

George was one of the most tasteful guitar players in rock and never self indulgent; everything he played was designed to fit and complement the song - an example is his Chet Atkins/Scotty More type solo in All My Loving and his great descending lick in Badge by Cream. I was once told that I had a similar approach which I considered to be a great compliment. Music is mainly about producing an emotional experience together and that was the idea of these guys.Their individual stature was irrelevant. They had nothing to prove.

I love George so much. I loved his voice plus his sexy good looks, when I was a young girl and The Beatles appeared on the scene. They were very goodlooking so my eyes were wide open to cute guys. George's big brown eyes and his sweet smile did it for me. I have loved him for 55 years. His spiritual side and great guitar playing, especially slide guitar is wonderful. I also love this Super Group. Tom Petty put on the greatest, most exciting concert ever. I saw him several times and it was phenomenal! Roy Orbison was amazing with that beautiful voice. Jeff is a superstar all on his own, and Bob Dylan is one of the greatest songwriters of all times. The songs he sang with this group fit him perfectly.

Its hits an emotional note deep in my soul; having been a musician myself for 5 decades and a few broken hearts later. If I go to a bar, and Telephone Line is on the jukebox, I am playing it! I saw an interview lately on KZbin with Jeff...why he wears sunglasses all the time? He is very simple, and directly honest: "I am very shy, and always have been." He would rather be in the background than the front man---which is why he has become a great producer post ELO.

I had only heard 2 songs, handle with care, and end of the line, before finding the rerelease at a garage sale, and buying it for $1. Best $1 I've ever spent. Volume 1 has taken permanent residency in my cars CD player. Not one bad song, on the disc.

@@comfortat I hear ya, bro, none of these guys are slackers! 😄 All of them, and more, have been major influences on my playing. Clapton is great, as you know, he and George were best of friends, hell, they even shared a wife! According to McCartney, when they were in the studio and George was trying to get them to pay some attention to gently weeps, he was ignored. George could have easily nailed that lead, but had Eric come in just to say fuck you to Paul and John. That was all when it was about to end. Each of them were ready to move on, sadly. I'm glad Eric did the lead, truly an awesome solo by a master. I love to watch the two of them play the song together in their Japan concerts, trading off the leads. Hendrix, well, he was other worldly, another master gone too soon. I often wonder what he'd have come up with had he not left us. There's a great band in the sky, it'll be my first stop!

It is like my favorite song, every time I hear it again, and it makes me happy to know Roy made a came back as even I forgot about him, it was his vocals that hit me like a ton of bricks when I heard it again on the radio first then discovered the MTV stuff later..! Roy was The Man...! I can sing just like him, but I never built a band to do this as I was always into Prog. Now I enjoy covering some of this Wilburys material... And thanks for your comments about Bob. God love the mans music but he is not a vocalist...

Dylan fans are willing to overlook any shortcomings he may have, because of his overall talents. He doesn't sing that well, especially when he was younger, he has a whiny nasally voice, but there are a lot of "rock stars" who can't sing. Dylans' total pop ackage is what makes him special. The lyrics, etc. are great. But compared to Lynn. Orbison, Harrison and Petty, his voice isn't on par. That doesn't make him any less talented or worthy. Dude is an icon.

One of the best lead guitarists in the history of the electric guitar in fact. Who redefined the use of slide guitar in rock music with inflections from halfway round the planet in India. What stands out with each member of the Traveling Wilburys -- each of them were truly humble. That is why there was no ego trying to dominate the group, they supported each other. The greatest musicians of all time were truly humble people. George just loves to play with his like-minded friends for playing sake alone. And sorry, but George Harrison was a lead guitarist, not a rhythm guitarist -- in fact George Harrison is listed in Rolling Stone's top 100 guitarists in one of the top ten slots, with another of his best mates in the number one spot, Eric Clapton. He modestly plays lead guitar with the Wilburys -- supporting his band mates.

Very good piece, but I disagree on your anti-Dylan. I don't even like Dylan that much, but the Wilburys brought out the best in Dylan, and, good voice or not, I think the Vol.1 album is incredibly well balanced. Three songs each, and liberally sprinkled with Orbison throughout. Jeff Lynne, arguably the best vocalist, modestly occupies the background. Thanks for the good review!

Perhaps Dylan's voice is an acquired taste. It may not be the prettiest voice in rock, but it's easily one of the most expressive. I've always enjoyed it -- it "speaks" to me. As for the "he can't sing" crowd, listen to "Girl From the North Country" (Nashville Skyline), "Spanish is the Loving Tongue" (Dylan) or "Stay With Me" (Shadows in the Night). I'm very happy with his deliveries with the Wilburys
