The recent Classic Stage Company star-studded Off-Broadway revival of Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman's Assassins will release a cast album. As previously announced, the recording from Broadway Records will be available digitally on March 18, with a physical CD out April 15. Watch Adam Chanler-Berat and Tavi Gevinson recording the score's "Unworthy of Your Love" above.
The musical explores the lives and motivations of nine men and women who either killed or tried to kill a United States President.
CSC Artistic Director John Doyle helmed the production, with a cast featuring Chanler-Berat as John Hinckley, Jr., Eddie Cooper as The Proprietor, Gevinson as Lynette “Squeaky” Fromme, Andy Grotelueschen as Samuel Byck, Judy Kuhn as Sara Jane Moore, Steven Pasquale as John Wilkes Booth, Ethan Slater as Lee Harvey Oswald/The Balladeer, Will Swenson as Charles Guiteau, Wesley Taylor as Giuseppe Zangara, and Brandon Uranowitz as Leon Czolgosz. The ensemble is rounded out by performers and musicians Brad Giovanine, Bianca Horn, Whit K. Lee, Rob Morrison, and Katrina Yaukey.
The production featured music direction and orchestrations by Greg Jarrett, and sound design by Matt Stine and Sam Kusnetz. The album is produced by two-time Grammy Award nominee Matt Stine; co-produced by Van Dean; executive produced by Toni Marie Davis, Tyler Ellman, Jon Zietz, Matt Connolly, Jonathan Demar, and Seriff Productions; and associate produced by Bartos Theatrical Group LLC. The cast recording is recorded and mixed by Isaiah Abolin.
The album will be the third English-language recording of the musical, following releases for the original 1990 Off-Broadway and 2004 Broadway productions.

Chillingly Sondheim, the juxtaposition of an upbeat (dare I say hummable?) melody accompanying psychotic ravings. God that’s good…

There’s an essential sweetness to Adam’s voice that even these lyrics can’t take away.

I know what you mean but do wonder if “sweetness” is the word? It seems like nakedness, which to me is similar to the genius of Barbra Streisand, where voice and expression and style form a single, unique musical sound (that seriously life would be less without). I’m totally fanboying! Haha! But I honestly think there are few people with the skill to match the high-level honesty they can bring to the table. It’s art.

This was absolutely the most beautiful and haunting rendition of this duet that I’ve heard. It gave me chills but also brought tears to my eyes.

Yeah in this interpretation The Balladeer played by Ethan Slater also accompanies the show on guitar throughout the show.

@@musiciangamer5506 Honestly, Just from listening to the 1991 Off Broadway cast recording, I always pictured The Balladeer as someone who would play the guitar(be it live or just miming it) while singing the ballads of the successful assassins on stage(especially switching up to the banjo, electric guitar, etc. for each time period/song). I’m surprised this wasn’t done before in either the 1991 off Broadway production OR the 2004 Broadway production, according to the bootlegs available, as it was with Jonathan Hinkley Jr. While Hinkley himself recorded songs of him singing and playing the guitar, a character named “The Balladeer” just SCREAMS the image of somebody who would accompany themselves and their pieces on at least SOME kind portable instrument! Wouldn’t you agree? P.S. I know it’s not an actual requirement, and that there are balladeers that perform with no instrument in hand(and said instrument is played by a band mate and so fourth), but I meant this for when the aesthetic of the Balladeer’s costume doesn’t already cover the general image of a balladeer.
