I really wish more people would take the "do this solo" advice! The first time I went I showed up completely alone and became totally obsessed, when I took my sister a while later I had to kind of run away from her to feel the same experience. It's also very annoying to try to maneuver past clingy groups holding onto each others' hands! The whole experience is so vastly improved by just following your own instincts.

My friend and I were separated at the get-go and never saw each other (it's so big in there!) until the end of the show. I would absolutely recommend doing it alone. It was so absorbing and fascinating - I wouldn't want to be hampered by what another person wanted to do (you can't talk, so you'd probably just be following each other!) or distracted by the other person's reactions. Plus it is SUCH a cool, surreal atmosphere - it's exciting to feel like you are all alone in this strange place - and what's cool is that even though there are other people all over the place, you still seem to be able to find places where you are literally alone, which I loved. The first 20 minutes of the show I was thinking it wasn't going to be any good - I couldn't see any actors and sort of got lost in this one spot - but then bang - it all changed and I was seriously entranced. You wouldn't believe the space - it's so fascinating - all these different rooms with these tiny details and props and you are encouraged to look and touch them and explore. For some reason the detective's office stands out to me - there are literally files of the cases he has had that you can comb through. I LOVED that. The "show" itself is really interesting - I didn't run around after anyone the way many people did, I sort of just wandered around and watched what I happened upon - and there is lots to see! The music and the lighting add so much to the atmosphere - it really is like being in a weird dream, an alternate universe. I have to say I really loved it, and I used to be in theatre (actor) and have seen hundreds of productions over the years, including Broadway shows, and it's one of the best experiences I have had. I was reading about it on Reddit before I went (just enough to get some info, but no spoilers!) and there are people who go back over and over. I thought, well that's a bit obsessive! But now I can see why. I will definitely go back! The feel of the experience has just stuck with me long past when I saw it - I never think back to shows like that. At the end, my friend and I met up and her experience was totally different from mine! She saw two pretty outrageous scenes that I totally missed, but I had a "one on one" experience with one of the actors (very occasionally an actor might pick someone and take them off for an individual, personal experience) - mine was on the mysterious 6th floor where no one is allowed to go - I won''t say what happened, but it was really cool! I was lucky to be picked. I really recommend it (obviously!)

I love even many years later, there is very little detail about the show online... You really need to go into the show (especially the first time) fairly clueless so that you really experience the magic. The only thing you really need to know is the outline and characters of Macbeth so that you can follow some of the stories and characters that are going on. I've seen the show twice in New York (one very early on in the production and one when it was quite empty) and once in Shanghai... Can't wait to go back to either of them!

Do you think you can still enjoy it/get what’s going on without knowing any of the story/characters of Macbeth at all?

We went yesterday, and the show was beautiful and quite amazing. The actors/dancers are wonderfully entrancing, and the set is beyond words. However our experience was ruined by people pushing, shoving, and trampling us throughout our journey, and that was sorely disappointing. Unless you are ready to quite literally fight another human for a viewing spot - you will not see anything. I got propelled down a flight of stairs by a crazy mob.
