Thank you for featuring the orchestra Playbill. If we want young people to do this work - and people to write shows with orchestras - and people to arrange - they have to see people doing it - and see it valued.

how fitting to see a grand, 20+ person orchestra performing one of the greatest scores ever composed for the broadway stage to replace an equally iconic musical which also performed with over 20 musicians in this same space for 35 years. as much as i miss phantom, this is just about the best thing that could have replaced it. gorgeous rendition!

Hands down, best overture ever!

How dare you not include the opening trumpet fanfare! That's the most iconic part of the overture!

Totally!

I've just seen video from another account which includes the first few measures (the trumpet fanfare precipitated by that swell from the drums and percussion), so the entire overture in all its' glory will be included for this revival.

Audra + George = Majestic! Looking forward to this. (And great work, Gypsy orchestra.)

Maybe a little fast in sections? The 2003 revival nailed the tempo and nothing beats the original! I'm also curious if the orchestration is a reduced number from what the show calls for. It feels a little weak to me. It's still glorious and a fitting show to follow Phantom into the Majestic.
@JohnHaslamMusic4 ай бұрын
It's no faster than the original in almost every section. 'Small World' could be a little slower, but it's nothing major tbh

It's not miked like it would be in the pit.

It took almost two minutes to show any strings. I was wondering if there were any at all, because they could be heard!

So STOKED for this revival!!! A crisply immaculate performance of an iconic overture - as Zeerosd said, the best possible show to replace Phantom indeed!

MORE LEAD TRUMPET!!!

Where are the strings? Just band instruments?
@dukeofrodtown17054 ай бұрын
The strings are to the left here, and oddly enough they are right behind the four reeds. There's 2 celli, but off camera (and there's an aux percussion/timpani player, who is also off camera - as well, a third trombonist and a French horn are present). That's the original orchestration - albeit slightly smaller in the string department. Mind you, that calls for 23 pieces IIRC

@@dukeofrodtown1705 And presumably it'll sound very different in the pit once the sound mix is sorted.

@@scottishphotographer Indeed! And it'll look different, too (hopefully it's not as cramped in there as the pit was with Phantom for 35 years)

It would be nice if the lead trumpet had a little more presence.

Take a lesson from the John Wilson Proms version (or just pipe in the original) because this ain't gonna cut it. Come on! It's Audra!

Sorry- Saw the original with Merman and others. Your musical interpretation is not even close. Too much trumpets. Little strings. Some points sound flat and off and rushing through. Squeeky at times. Please follow original script and listen carefully. Mr. Goldberg way too fast. The drummer needs to calm down- like a 3 year old banging away. Audrey- totally wrong choice for lead. Should have been a newcomer. The show speaks for itself. It’s legendary and iconic.

hearing this video for the first time....Edie, it's called REHEARSAL....once you see the production after it's opening preview in PERFORMANCE, then you I will respect your comments.

In an interview, the conductor said he's still polishing it up as they're using the original orchestrations from 1959 and want to get it just right. He also mentioned that this is only a taste since they haven't used any amplification yet. I guarantee it will sound 10x better once they start performances!

Your comment includes some valid opinions, and also some outright ignorance. You’re not comparing this to the Merman performance , you are comparing this to the album. That was polished and mixed. This is audio being picked up from a read-through on stage. Most of us are grateful that they are using the original orchestrations, and the full-size pit, employing a passel of extraordinary AFM members. Yes, there are some intonation issues in the woodwinds at the moment. But no, you have no idea how Audra, spelt with an A at the end, will be as a Mama Rose. Maybe you are not, but you sound like a typical naysayer who won’t like anything, and enjoys being snarky. Would you prefer Broadway had no classic revivals? Not me. I’m sorry if this seems harsh, but I regret that the first comment to come up on this feed is a post from the Joy-kill community.

@@_zeerosdWho is the conductor, do you know? At first, it looked a lot like David Chase, but I don’t think that’s correct.
