Honestly, that could be a neat way to introduce a character. Someone hired to kill the party to that point but loses the fight and is convinced they've been duped. Would definitely need to be discussed with the other Players beforehand, for obvious reasons, but could be a really cool thing. I get the distinct feeling it was nothing like that.

I had a game once where our dm had a bounty on one of the player's heads and 3 of us were trying to hunt him for it. The bounty was bogus and a plot by political enemies to strengthen their own grip, but we didn't learn that until after some combat. It was pulled off fantastically and a great way to introduce the party to each other.

Only to fail persuasion to trade the item for a higher rank within the faction. Not only that telling him to be patient and have a few members follow us to the end. Prior to this i had 2 faction members try and poison and kill me for said item. Trying to take the glory for themselves. They didnt live long. Final ending being betrayed by the zentarim and our party finally knew what had happened and pvp happened. @@shredditplays6021 whether the organizations are evil is not the point. You clearly have no clue on how alignments work and your extreme tunnel vision along with your egomaniacal attitude is why you're stirring so much shit. Lawful means you follow laws, or a code (could even be personal), or a hierarchy, etc. You obey whatever makes you lawful, you don't try to bend it to suit your bullshit. A lawful good character like yours is supposed to follow a set of rules to do good deeds, like bringing down what you perceive as an evil organization. They wouldn't break the laws, wouldn't deceive left and right, wouldn't forge documents, wouldn't put an innocent bystander in jeopardy because of a failed attempt at trying to *lie to a city guard*. They would do everything lawful in their power to achieve their goals. You're not even being Lawful Evil, for what it's worth. You're not exploiting unfair laws and loopholes, or obediently carrying out the orders of an evil hierarchy, etc. You see "law" and you think "this doesn't help me, so I'll just ignore it". I doubt you're playing a rogue, but you're actually playing a rogue. A Chaotic Neutral rogue at best, but most likely a Chaotic Evil rogue in the making - if not already full blown evil and we just don't know it yet from these 2 stories alone, apart from the innocent NPC you've already screwed. Sorry to say, but currently you suck at this. That would be okay if you were willing to put a stop on this mess, really listen to everyone calling you out on what you're doing wrong and reflect on why you're causing so much grief at your table. OP praised you for the brief moment when you seemed to have learned and improved. Keep that up, drop the bullshit, profit. Else, you'll just make a new toon, repeat the mistakes, annoy the party in and out of character, get your toon killed, restart the cycle. Eventually, people will get tired of this behavior and you'll just be kicked out of the group, never to be missed.

Reminds me of a character played by a friend of mine a long time back. He was a wizard, over 3 sessions he dropped a fireball spell on my character 3 times. The first time the party yelled at him, in character. The second time I told him if it happened again I would kill him, in character. The third time, after our healer got me back up from 0 HP I walked over to him (clothes smoking, charred hair, etc) and put an arrow in his throat at point blank range. Then told the healer it was her choice to save him or not as I walked away. She healed him, he stopped targeting near party members with fireballs, and his, suitably chastised, wizard became a much more valuable comrade. The player is still a good friend. Oh and critcrab, R is trolling your comments.

That's why I'm always cautious with bringing a big, overpowered monster into the campaign for the players to be like "gasp, that's dangerous, we can't take that yet", because I too have met a fair share of players who think "Man, wouldn't it be awesome if I (and I alone) slew that thing at level 3?" My best story in this was a Wood Elf Monk, who, is outpacing everyone else in the party, naturally was first in, flurry of blows and all that, sometimes that would even be enough to slay the initial monsters. He also took a lot of hits, and neither his HP or AC was all that high. More importantly the party healer was a Mountain Dwarf Life Cleric and the Cleric had even said to the Monk in game "Look, if you run that far ahead, I can't heal you, can you stay a little closer to the rest of the party, please?" prior to this, but the Monk, hungry for glory and fame and the kill-count (which he was the only player to care for), either ignores or forgets this plea, runs head first into a tomb, dodges past a dart trap and begins fighting the undead, with the rest of the party not even inside the tomb at this point. Most of the low tier minions, run of the mill Skeletons, go down quickly to the Monk dealing lots of damage (in part due to bludgeoning), but then the more advance stuff like Wights and Shadows starts to get in on it. One particular enemy, I forget exactly what it was, the Monk was informed was "excuming an aura of decay", warning him that close combat with this lumbering, festering corpse was a REALLY bad idea. At this point the party's Tiefling Druid, Half-Orc Barbarian, Human Wizard and Dragonborn Rogue have all made it in, and try to gain the attention of more Skeletons and Shadows. Dwarf Cleric rolled a poor initiative, and the 25 speed means that they just now have reached the dart-trap. Meanwhile Monk tries to fight the unique Undead, landing a couple of hard hits, but for all his speed and damage output, he has basically nothing to stop the corpse's 10 ft. Necrotic aura from hurting him, so by the time Cleric actually gets ready to toss some radiant damage out, or apply healing to the party, Monk have already been downed. In the aura of the corpse. That continues to deal Necrotic damage. And kills him. Afterwards he, of course, blamed the Cleric for "not healing a downed player", and basically the entire party was "stop running ahead all the time then." Cleric's player was kind of timid, though their Dwarf was brusque. Thankfully Monk learned from his mistake, and was brought back a couple of sessions later, with the party, begrudgingly, spending all the loot from the tomb on getting him back.

I have another suspicion. This player may not fully understand that he can interact with the world by just saying things, without necessarily involving an aspect of his character sheet. I imagine a thought process that's sort of like this: "I could just ask to enter, but that would be persuasion and my character doesn't have a good modifier for it, so I have to use deception and come up with a lie". This could lie with a misunderstanding of how DnD works, tunnel vision, or even just a DM who asks for unnecessary rolls. The basic idea to me is that this player doesn't understand how to interact within the game.

I could try and come up with a long post about how R’s character could be fixed/how some of his actions make sense for the backstory but not alignment, and how it still doesn’t make his actions right. I could talk about how the DM could’ve quickly defused at least the situation with the snake. (but that’s only with the power of hindsight helping) but no instead I am going to give one single pearl of wisdom that I hope anybody else who reads this will be able to understand. If there is a monster that sleeps for a long time, only wakes up on a specific date like clockwork, and that the rest of the continent/world is fully aware of this creature and comes together to fight it off. The never... never do anything that could possibly prematurely wake it up. Because even if you somehow survive your moronic decision you will most likely be found out and become persona-non-grata to the entire continent/world and it won’t matter if you’re trying to be great heroes you will be slapped with the big bad evil guy moniker.

Apparently he wanted some homebrew stuff with Kaiju in it. Nothing to say against that, but the story does suggest that the GM didn't put his foot down strongly enough. At least at the incident with the giant snake, the player was acting unrealistically disruptive. In such a moment, the GM should clearly tell him what is common knowledge about this entity and that the player character KNOWS that he cannot possibly put down that monster with a single powerful spell and that awakening this creature can only result in a catastrophee, thus his character wouldn't do it unless he'd want to roleplay him as being terminally insane.

I actually did TPK my party once (non-lethal), but in my defense I was a Paladin and the party tried to steal back the money I had donated to a local charity. Part of my character was that he would donate his worldly wealth (aside from a few specific magic items that he himself helped to make in his down time). Over the course of the campaign my character had created his own charity organization that more or less managed most other charities around the continent, so stealing from this charity would have gotten them several million gold and easily paid for everything every party member could want, and the Rogue's player had convinced the party that the charity had enough gold that it wouldn't be missed, but that what it could buy for the party would ensure that we could defeat the BBEG, and that they would do far more good than harm by commiting the heist. I was able to convince the DM that, for trying to steal from the charity, the party could be considered Chaotic Evil for the encounter (one of those magic items I mentioned earlier was a sword that dealt bonus damage to Chaotic or Evil targets, double if CE).

I detest DM/GMs that use this style of play. I had a guy who would run a weekly game and while everyone had work during the week or other commitments there was one player who basically worked from home. Through out the week he and the DM would play while the rest of us patiently waited until the Saturday. At first it was mostly character development stuff for the guy but soon enough it was story elements that he was progressing that we agreed to approach the next session. We told the DM we didn't like it and it would unbalance the game along with destroying everything we worked for but he refused to listen. Guess the other player stroked his ego so much that he was willing to risk it all. Eventually there came a Saturday where a different guy came early to catch up and the GM allowed the same razzle dazzle he did with the other player. We all arrived and were told that the game was over because of the choices the player made. I told him to kindly fuck off and he, not the player, just killed a 5 year campaign in a year for allowing what he did to transpire. No one returned to that guys table except the original offending player because we didn't want to deal with the bullshit. The rest of us still gather on the regular while the DM moved to another city because no one wanted to hang with him anymore. Sure there were other reasons behind the split but this was the death knell that sounded the end.

I don’t mind that kind of thing in games like Vampire the Masquerade where everyone kind of has their own agenda, and being too free with information about yourself can give your enemies a huge advantage. I do mini-sessions for characters in 5e from time to time as well, but I won’t let anyone try and fuck over the party on purpose. What happened to you and your friends is unfortunate. Good riddance to that DM!

@@lightning_bishop260 I was typing out a reply and mate...let's just say it started to ramble for all the messed up parts of the experience. I believe you have valid points with the WoD games, but I'm sure you give equal time and surely any game played that way should have things metered so no one player begins to outstrip the others by orders of magnitude. The effort of the group was disproportionate to that of the one guy. He was getting the rewards by showing up everyday to side game when we had people that could only do the weekend game.
@lightning_bishop260

Kyle Stark on that we are absolutely in agreement. The key to a successful game is balance. As long as everyone gets equal opportunities to shine, and no one player gets an absurd advantage over the others through opportunities not presented to the rest of the group, balance can hopefully be maintained. But yeah, as far as people who try to become the main character of a group are concerned, I tell those people to hit the bricks, because there is no room for glory-hogging at my table. TRPGs are collaborative storytelling. Extra sessions in my games are just to give players opportunities do do things that the whole party doesn’t need to get dragged into. Shopping for items, sending a letter, getting information at a temple or library, exploring a town to find out more about the area, or doing things related to their backstory. I never let players maliciously interfere with each other. I did that ONE TIME in a homebrew game I was running, and have regretted it ever since. It didn’t end on a good note. We’re all still friends, but we’ve never really tried to play with each other again.

@@Chatedh It's about execution, I think the concept of mini sessions is excellent and I've employed something similar in my games. No, he's obviously a troll, kick him. If he "doesn't understand why everyone's so mad" is the equivalent of "it was just for the lulz", and it also means that he's going to do it again. He's playing nice OOC so he doesn't get booted, because the point is to ruin the game for the other players by being intentionally obtuse in game. While I'm all for three chances, he spent two of them trying to TPK the party, and the third blowing himself up instead of sitting in jail (because he's seen that his explosion casting can be countered and disabled). He figures, "start a new character, totally different type, and they won't be able to anticipate my next TPK attempt". Now, if I'm wrong, that's a shame, because I'd kicked a nice guy from the game, but at least my table wouldn't have a shitheel in it.

So I tried running a Shadowrun campaign one time. Had a session 0 and told my party a few things. 1) some missions will need to be loud or stealth, some can be either. 2) I'm very much going to lean into "rule of cool" so while I will always give them obstacles, I will try to give them the tools for any scheme they come up with to complete a run. 3) I would try to do 2-3 hour sessions where about 45 min would be plot and all the prep they would need to do for a run, and the rest would be doing the run. They basically would just argue for 45 min about how to do the run, shoot down every idea as unrealistic, assume every bit of info I gave them about security was me trying to point them away from trying what they were looking into, then they would wing it, shoot everything, never do stealth, and run away. I actually needed players like R. Come up with a crazy idea and try it. Blow shit up one time, lie your way in the next. Obviously he was blind to group dynamics which is annoying to everybody but him, so not justifying his actions, but his fly by the seat of your pants style and propensity for out of the box ideas could fit another group/setting.

I just got a story for this. This is set in a inn, in a creepy 400 year old abandoned town. So my younger brother was keeping watch for 2 hours while the rest of us long rested. He looked out the window of the inn (because we blocked up the entrances after I had to give cuthulu a paper cut) and saw a parade of ghosts. There was talking, laughing, Mexican music, the lot. He then WENT OUTSIDE AND 10. GHOSTS FLEW THREW HIM. He got aged up 10 years, his strength is lowered by 5, (a problem, he's a fighter) and his hitpoints reduced to one. My level one paladin had to expend 3 out of 5 of my lay on hands health pool. He did plenty of jackass stuff later, like split the party and try to rob the bank as lawful good, but non of its worth writing.

I played years ago... (2nd edition) and my little brother was a LOT like R. We finally got tired of his shit and came up with a plan. You see, he played a Dwarven Battle Rager who LOVED spikey armor. Well, another one of my friends played a Furbolg and while we visited a tavern, before the questline even began, we decided to ditch the pain in the ass. We had my brothers character sit at the end of a bench. Then the Furbolg comes running across the room, jumps off a table and does a cannonball on the OTHER end of the table and launches the dwarf into the ceiling. The DM called for a roll to hit. I shit you not, a natural 20! We stuck the obnoxious dwarf to the ceiling of the tavern and left to fulfill our mission! LOL. The BEST part of this came about 2 months later. We're sitting around playing, my brother had calmed his antics down... A LOT... since the battle rager incident. However, he was getting a little cocky during our campaign. SO, the DM, remembering the incident, maneuvers us to a tavern. Where upon entry, we all have to roll a perception check. The few of us that passed it noticed a dwarven skeleton, clad in spikey ass armor stuck to the ceiling! We all lost it, laughing hysterically and my brother just says "Fuck you guys." and hangs his head. One of the funnier moments we had while playing. We're currently collecting the books and stuff to start again. My wife and I are trying to figure out all the changes to 5e and I've invited a few of the guys from all those years ago to join us, as well as some new friends and even my little brother. Looking forward to seeing what kind of dumbfuckery we can get into now that we have a couple more decades of experience in being dipshits!

See, this is why I use an alternate set-up from the 'good/evil/lawful/neutral' chart. I don't like telling players what their characters are, but in this situation I would have to tell him 'Given your actions, you'd have to be neutral evil, perhaps chaotic, you are absolutely not acting in a selfless way'.
@ArawnNox
@ArawnNox 3 жыл бұрын

@JustDev For sure, yeah. In RAW the DM should absolutely be enforcing an alignment change if someone consistently acts outside of alignment.
@Cellidor
@Cellidor 3 жыл бұрын
@JustDev That's why I prefer an alternative set up. It's not 'good' and 'evil' but 'positive' and 'negative', in the sense of magical energies (think radiant and necrotic). Fire magic would be on the positive end, cold magic on the negative, but neither magic is 'good' or 'bad'. That way spells that care about alignment (in this case magical alignment) still matter in game. Lawful and Chaotic are the same way, whether your attunement to magic is uniform or sporadic. Someone with chaotic-positive leanings may find lightning magic appealing, those with lawful-negative may be drawn to magical poisons. Psychic could be considered neutral, as another example. That way I leave _personality_ up to the player, but can still have them keep a strict 'magical alignment' otherwise. I even renamed 'positive' and 'negative' to 'Generative' and 'Entropic' so people can avoid confusion by still using the 'CE/LE/LN' alignment short-hand, or even making 'Lawful' into 'Linear' to fully separate 'your character's alignment' from 'your character's personality'.

You know, I played a character who, at one point, was a walking TPK waiting to happen. Not because I was out trying to kill the party or ruin sessions on purpose, but because of how Frenzy mechanics work, on top of having a 15 foot reach weapon and having a stupid amount of damage output...on top of having a stupidly high mobility...at least that got fixed once my character became a Legendary Dreadnought. Moral of the story is, professionals have standards. Rather than be an edgelord trying to actively kill your party, just make your very existence be the thing that might bring about a TPK. Things are a lot more hilarious that way and people have a lot less hard feelings for it, especially if you can roleplay the character as being an introvert that's given himself PTSD and is terrified of himself.
