"I wanna play a homophobic rapist!" Homophobia and rape have no place in my game. Rape is not "fun," and hating someone because of their sexual orientation is wrong. You can have flaws as a character, but that is overstepping my comfort zone as a DM. "Let me play the character I wanna play, bro!" The character you wanna play crosses lines I as a DM am uncomfortable with. I will not allow a player to put me and other players in an uncomfortable situation because you wanna treat serious topics in real life as a joke. "Fine! Then I'll ruin your game!" If you're going to get angry because I won't allow you to overstep my boundaries, then you're not welcome at my table. You can either leave or learn to be an adult.

@@belafeldbusch3397 Yeah, every campaign we always do a session zero where we each voice anything we don't want to see crop up. My fiancé always insists on "No rape ever." Because it makes him uncomfortable (naturally). The DM agrees and another hard line for our group is suicide or self harm. The only exception to this was when we played Curse of Strahd and the DM warned us ahead of time that the story can get pretty dark in places, so should those subjects crop up...he'll tell us before hand so we can leave the room and grab a coffee. That's always worked out well for us.

those guys probably have never DM´d a homebrew campaign themselves, otherwise they would know how much time it takes and what work it is to put up a homebrew campaign, and would probably be much more respectful. more probable they are just dickheads who think it´s cool to derail a DM´s work and think it´s a sport and they need to score. if they allready had DMing experience, they would be just A-Holes knowing what they are ruining,

Tomlyn Mathews Jr but neither should you go the other way. D&D looks like a lot of work not just for the DM, but for the players. there’s a lot to keep track of. (if done well) And so it’s very disrespectful to everyone involved if you don’t take the game a little seriously. That would be like playing Monopoly and because you’re bored, three hours in you grab the board yell earthquake and flip it scattering everything. Yeah it’s a game but it’s a game that they put time in that’s just being disrespectful.

To be fair there are some really funny racist jokes that people will take hard. One I particularly love is "Today's world is so PC! You can't even say black paint anymore, now it's all "tyrone, would you please paint that wall?"". Now you might, as a sensible person, see that the joke has racism as a theme, but the punch-line is a good ol' bait and switch and the only person it implies bad things about is the pov teller inside the joke because he's cartoonishly racist. But many groups might get pissy nevertheless, like making racism into a joke (which it is, just like racists themselves) is somehow not what you're supposed to do. Okay, I'll get off my soapbox

@@3XHS TL;DR-I don't believe casual racism is a thing or should be a thing, racism is racism and nitpicking on things with a concept of casual racism is a slippery slope. What does casual racism mean? That you're usually fair and open-minded but on the weekends you think KKK might not have been the absolute worst? Racism is racism, and no one is ever cartoonishly racist unless they're really fucking angry. Even then, it might just be because they're trying to hurt the other person as much as possible. Besides, where do you draw the line between "casual racism" and actual racial differences? You're not about to tell me I should start feeling offended when I go to an Indian and the waiter tells me I might want to try something less spicy, since I'm white and we are objectively more receptive to capsaicin, therefore we can't eat as hot as honestly everyone from the middle east? Should black people be incensed that they are advised to have a somewhat leaner diet because theirr bodies are worse at metabolizing certtain kinds of fats? Are we really gonna call researchers racist for not developing medication for subgroups of people who distrust them and don't really offer a sample for them to work on, just because their medicine works only on people they had samples for? I could go on, but I think my point is clear-if we subcategorize racism, it can be twisted to justify any form of outrage. And I don't know about you, but that's not a world I wanna live in.

First story: ... I would have changed *almost* nothing. Game Mom did this one pretty damn well, not gonna lie. The only thing I'd personally have done different is press charges on the guy for whipping it out and pissing on the car. Also, let's give the DM some credit for having enough spine for telling the That Guy to fuck off - too many DMs in these stories either allow the problem to continue well beyond the point of reason, or are the problem themselves. Good on this DM for being on the ball. Second story: are you fucking kidding me? But but but... HOW? How is it possible to take pride in ruining something for somebody else? Sure, I've had my players ruin stuff in my game before. Yes, one of them was bad enough about it that I more-or-less removed them from the game. But I can also say with relative certainty that they weren't doing it on purpose. Don't blame this guy at all for not running games with them anymore - I sure wouldn't.

I was running a game - my first time doing so - and I set up a plot twist well in advance, using a lot of foreshadowing, that the DMPC Ordin (a spunky nice Lawful Good Paladin) had more issues than he let on, and that few things in the homebrew set up were as they appeared to be. Culminating in the big moment - Ordin is broken by the princess he loved turning out to be in love with the traitorous knight who kidnapped her, his best friend turning out to be the traitorous knight in disguise who desperately wanted Ordin to turn against the Kingdom, and the king he served turning out to be a tyrant and he broke his oaths killing the king, losing his powers. Then Ordin becomes the Big Bad Evil Guy Yctrax, Demon God of Destruction, whose presence in the future warped reality and brought the heroes there in the first place! ... ... I don't think that everyone uses session zero to full-on create their PCs. Most people I've known only use it to lay out the setting (or create the setting, if you do it by committee like my group sometimes does), get the group invested in it, and maybe break down who's going to play tank or heals, or something like that. Just as often, by the end of session zero, we might get as far as saying "Hey, I think I'll play the Cleric this time!", but we're just expected to have our PCs rolled up and ready by first session. The only time our DM might call us on something is if we come to the table with a ridiculous stat-set or something (like, a 22 in a primary stat at level 1, when we use 3d6 and reroll 1s as our stat determination method), but if it's a character behavior thing, it wouldn't play out until the game got rolling.

I honestly have no idea why someone would WANT to play as a rapist in a game like DnD. It genuinely concerns me since some people use this game as a way to play out particular fantasies. Out of all the ways you can customize and flavor your character, from stealthy ninjas and swashbuckling pirates to silly knights and musical priests, why on earth would you want to play as a rapist of any sort?
@justinsanchez8693
@justinsanchez8693 3 жыл бұрын
I can understand if someone wants to be an evil character (Sometimes it can be fun to play a villain), which is why evil campaigns are a thing, but that doesn't justify the first player. Heck, why would someone opt into being a rapist over a powerful necromancer, an evil king, or a bloody assassin?
@XxTaiMTxX
@XxTaiMTxX 3 жыл бұрын
This particular player, in my estimation, is doing this for a single simple reason. They are gay and not out of the closet yet. "I'm going to kill homosexuals! That proves I'm not gay!" "I'm going to rape women! See! I want to bang women! I'm not gay!" Or, you have the more disturbing option for the person... They are angry at women for not wanting to date them, and probably had a weird religious upbringing about homosexuality of which they feel some weird desire to prove their faith by having to kill homosexuals at every opportunity. This is the more disturbing options because most people like this tend to end up murdering people... or committing particularly heinous crimes.

@@XxTaiMTxX an interesting take, and I think those could also be a possibility, though i think the most likely explanation would be that he's in a particularly edge-lordy phase of growing up. Like he wants any kind of attention, and being a rapist is deplorable enough to get him the amount of attention he wanted, but ultimately not the kind of attention he was looking for. Otherwise i dont think he would have announced it like he did as he took the "look at the horrible no good very bad kind of person I want to play guys!" approach pretty much immediately.

Something about this seems realllllly fishy. What is an adult woman doing with nearly ~15 kids during doing DnD? Second, the snuggly player was staged in such a way that he seemed almost entirely way too innocent and perfect, victim to the maximum. Third, the new character was so borderline satanic that it was nigh-comical. I also found it a little unusual that all the new kid's mother did was yank on a kid, and then OP DECKED her in the face and for some reason the cops arrested the other woman and not the one who ASSAULTED THE OTHER MOM. I get that self-defense was a thing, but nobody was threatened with their lives and it seems really extreme for something you could just restrain her or push her out of the house, not deck her in the face. Cops are way too black-and-white to just let a mother deck someone in the face for grabbing a kid without at least filing a warning or going through court for deliberation first. Also, 'a borderline homophobic comment' toward what was a male kid leaning against a mother's shoulder? What? This even adds more insane extremism to the new kid's behavior. ALSO, WHO INVITED THIS KID?? WHO LET HIM IN??

Actual, intentional and unlawful touching or striking of another person against the will of the other; or c. Unlawfully and intentionally causing bodily harm to an individual. " definitions.uslegal.com/b/battery/ The kid's mom committed battery (specifically example b) to the child she grabbed first. After that OP punching her to protect the child could easily be ruled self defense since self defense doesn't just mean protecting yourself but also others from harm or threat. When you then factor in the earlier behavior from her child and the kid's mom showing up uninvited to a strangers house and committing battery on said property it's pretty open and shut, the mom would get arrested and OP would simply get their statement taken.

Self-defense is defined as the right to prevent suffering force or violence through the use of a sufficient level of counteracting force or violence. Src: criminal.findlaw.com/criminal-law-basics/self-defense-overview.html#:~:text=Self%2Ddefense%20is%20defined%20as,of%20counteracting%20force%20or%20violence. You know what, you taught me something. @BericD
@BericD 3 жыл бұрын
@@animatedwolf5873 Yeah seriously who the hell did invite that kid over? There had to have been red flags of the kid's behavior prior to this. In a case that actually goes to trial self defense can be a little more murky depending on circumstances though. You have to have only used appropriate force (which often can be up to the jury to decide if it was appropriate) and often you'll have to prove you couldn't have reasonably removed yourself from that situation without using force, again depending on circrumtances. Of course that's only if the incident goes to trial, which most don't they just take a plea-bargain since a trial can be even worse if they lose. But during an arrest cops typically go with "yeah, person A seemed to start it so arrest person A, take person B's and any other witnesses statements and let the courts deal with the rest."

Considering that the story 1 OP said she's in her 40s, not that she *is* 40, and she mentions that the "snuggly player" is now at a better job than before, and the "cleric player" is her regular pet-sitter, implying ease of transportation and such, and the new guy was around 18-20, I don't think there's actual "kids" in this game. I'm pretty sure they're at minimum 18, especially given all the talk at the start about helping them with cover letters and such. Like, I know kids as young as 15 can apply for jobs (I've worked with several), but most of them aren't exactly the sort who are concerned about putting together a good resume, but are rather just out there to get their first job. I imagine it's much more likely that this is a group of 18-20+ folks, it's just that she's probably at least 20 years older than most of them, which puts her well into the "adult even to adults" level. She's wiser and more experienced, and possibly more willing to help them out than their actual family might be, for all we know. She also mentioned that her son is involved in the group, which might be how they came to find out about the group and join up. Also, I've known lots of people like the "snuggly player," who want physical comfort/contact when upset, and/or are very non-confrontational and wouldn't want to start a fight when they're there for a game. And in this day and age, I wouldn't put a "Hey, what are you, gay?" comment past even a not-psycho-just-kinda-dudebro guy, for seeing another guy who is actively seeking out hugs. So even that seems to check out.

I also find it kind of weird how the DM knows enough that this guy is looking for a group, but not that he is completely insane. I mean, it's not impossible, but it is slim.

@@phabiorules that's actually not that uncommon. many DM's and GM's will have a card or sheet at their local game stores when looking for players. before the "15 day" lock down my local shop would hold a monthly "find a group" day where dm's and ungrouped players would do something like speed dating to try and fill slots and get people games. sometimes people are super cool when you're searching and only later turn into assholes. I once had a kid, like 16, who was great for the first like 5 sessions, then he just went off on one of my other players about something stupid (Iirc, apparently she didn't wave to him at Walmart) and even after telling him that behavior would not be accepted again he just kept becoming more of an asshole, like he wouldn't break the same rule twice but first it was fighting, then it was eating the diabetic players emergency snacks, screaming meme phrases like"German guy did nothing wrong" and "9/11 was an inside job" when he rolled his dice, then finally he showed up to a session late and we think drunk which was a super big deal since many of us were adults so an intoxicated minor was a major flag. so i had to remove him from the table. but again for the first 5 sessions or so he was literally the ideal player.

I think I saw this in Urban Dictionary "Schrödinger's Douchebag: A guy who says offensive things and decides whether he was joking based on the reaction of people around him."

I had a group to had to deal with a guy who flat out said he thinks the most fun was derailing campaigns. He saw it as a personal victory and always smiled when he got a session to be pushed back by a week or two because he derailed it so bad.

Not even one minute out and someone already disliked it? Their determination, or programming skills with bot accounts, are pretty good.

So my first and only D&D group is awesome. Ive only been with them about a year now, but they have been pretty great. We all do our best to mix it up, we talk things out, and we are pretty dope overall. We have our issues, we try to work them out. there will definitely be more down the road, but we all want the same thing out of our campaigns, and the places where we vary help to push each other and keep it interesting. If I could change anything I would love to play a campaign with a somewhat harsher DM. maybe when it's my turn to step to the plate I'll talk to them about a game with a bit more ice in it. More environmental challenges, and a bit less mercy. We'll see.
