I think what the commissioner is really talking about more so is the fan bases. Paul George a year ago signed a deal to "stay" is OKC. Then he says trade me. I ain't saying he's wrong for it. I think what might help is a contract kicker/penalty in trades. First thing I'd say is full one year NTC on all new contracts unless it's a pre-arranged sign and trade. Team trades a player against the player wishes, player gets a 10% bonus to his remaining contract paid by the trading team with no salary cap hit. If the player has a team option in his contract, it becomes a player option. Player requests a trade, player takes a 10% penalty to his remaining contract. Any option years on a contract if the player requests the trade is automatically invoked. I would also allow teams and players a one person mutual trade with no penalty or bonus and contracts options remaining the same.
@Jumbo372795 жыл бұрын

Didn't Bryce Harper sign a $330,000,000 dollar contract this year, and Mike Trout a $430,000,000 contract? Players are independent contractors. They go where their services are required. And if we’re being real some of these guys (steph, lebron, KD, etc.) don’t even get what they’re worth given the revenue they generate so I’m not tryna hear all of these contrived narratives attempting to swing the momentum back to the favor of the owners.
@leroydirks57515 жыл бұрын
About to have a league losing teams instead of expanding. Not many will be able to compete long term when players are able to choose LA and NY for their outside ventures. Not sure of a good solution but this won't be good in 5-10 yrs.

The NBA is the company. Teams are like branches within the company. Players still get their money even if they’re traded.

Perfect....a step further, the NBA franchisees are like dealer network to car manufacturer i.e the NBA...The NBA makes money irrespective of which dealer sells the car...

Kevin Kirk so what that dont mean they want to get traded when they go to a new team they have to move there whole family who built lives there and change there whole routine
@kevinkirk62765 жыл бұрын
People get relocated in their jobs all the time. If they don’t like it then don’t be in the NBA. The difference is they get compensated very well to put up with it versus a regular person who relies on that check and can’t just leave their job.

Kevin Kirk and People leave jobs all the time same goes for the owners i have no problem with players being traded but were not about to be okay with a double standard its cool for owners to trade players but then get mad at a player for leaving a team especially as a Free agent idc what team they go to whether Its KD going to Goldenstate type situation or a Khawi Situation players played out there contracts and earned that right
@kevinkirk62765 жыл бұрын
Nobody is mad at players who played out their contracts. Everything you just said is dumb. No one is complaining about that especially not me. Fulfill your contract and do whatever you want to do

Whitlock is incorrect on this. The Owners own the facility and the brand. The players are contractors, some more independent than others but they all supply a service. The players are tradesmen in owners facilities. Honestly the nfl should apply this rule.
@Independent3655 жыл бұрын
Whitlock has a point. Fans will get annoyed when they get a star player and 2 years later he dips to team up to another superstar team when they are still under contract. No sense of stability

An off-season like this every 4-10 years is manageable, but if players are asking for trades every January/June, everything becomes very unstable and confusing for fans. It works in soccer because fans are primarily loyal to teams. NBA fans are primarily loyal to players and seeing your favorite players move every 1-2 years will start to seem very cartoonish after a while

Indiana Pacers have been a model franchise for 30 years and have been in contention for a title each decade. Yet they can't even get a meeting with NBA all stars. That's an issue that probably can't be fixed, but give the team more power to retain players they acquired would help.

Solution: Write up more thorough contracts that both parties can agree on. If it's written into the contract that said player is guaranteed X amount of dollars, then it should also be written into the contract that said player is guaranteed to spend X amount of years at said orginization. No re-negs from either party.

I’m all for player power as we all fight for our rights in the workplace but why do we expect the owners to just hand it over to the players? None of us would let the employees tell us how to run our own business so why should they? Fair pay for their services is one thing, but control and power over the industry that they WORK FOR is completely different🤷🏽♂️
@kam34105 жыл бұрын
The NBA doesn't have a contract with the player the team does and the team can trade players anytime they want and there is nothing requiring them to trade you. The only requirement a player has is the salary and if.....IF, they have a no trade clause. The rest is in the hands of the owner.
@blackbolt34235 жыл бұрын
Its a thin line , but at the end of the day the Nba won't have a league that fans watch if this kind of thing continues You cant continue to have players jumping ship before they fulfill their contactual obligation.
@memorymachingambi22305 жыл бұрын
Anjohn Davis: How about when teams don’t fulfill their contractual obligations? The comparison between teams trading players mid-contract versus players demanding trades mid-contract isn’t even close! There’s only a handful of players with that kind of profile - literally a handful YET every team has the ability to trade everyone on their roster anytime (except a few players with trade veto power). As for Free Agents, well they are exactly that; FAs!!!

The problem isn't that players get to leave when their contract is up. The problem is that they're banding together to form superteams. Even that, in and of itself, is not terrible, if it occurred more randomly. The problem over the long term is players forming superteams in a handful of markets: NY, LA, Miami, Houston. Now, from the fan perspective, the rest of the league, some 25 or so teams have become a development league for the handful of markets that will get to have these superteams. Hasn't hurt the league yet. But it could in the long run as fans in the other 25 markets tune out.
@eatemup885 жыл бұрын
The only reason this a problem is because of the one and done rule. The kids coming out college are not ready for NBA. And it taking at least 4 or 5 year for those players to develop. And if they stay around that long

The real issue is that coaches have little influence anymore, and that star players+agents can GM-gineer a team to a greater extent. The resulting dynamic is now that the emotional demands of players can supersede any and all prerogatives of coaching. Coaches are now little more than the front-line analyst suggestion-maker/supervisor ready to get the boot after a year or so.
