In today's video I am talking about a mod that has recently come out for the Nintendo Switch that can be used for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. This macro mod is something that can allow players to cheat at competitive Smash Ultimate tournaments and if left unchecked could do damage to the online and offline Ultimate competitive scene.

To me I'm less worried about inputs for combos, what worries me more are things like mashing out of grabs/buries/stuns, and SDI. Those are things that some people could use to skirt the line but are extremely impactful with any character. There are some people who have insane SDI that could seem like a macro, and I think it has the chance to ruin games more than using it for combos

Using this literally destroys the scene. As Larry mentioned, I as a TO or mod wouldn'T want to deal with this. As in, trying to find out whether someone is using the mod or not (aka them being just that proficient). I gotta say, while this is obviously worrying, I wonder if this could be the thing that actually makes Nintendo do something good for the online gameplay now that they stopped supporting this game, perhaps even doing some balancing patches while they're at it. Unfotunately, there are controllers like the 8bitdo pro that allows you to make custom macros to any button on the controller. So getting a switch banned from online isn't going to be the end all solution.

I bought that controller years ago because i thought it was a good controller. Its mid But don't worry the macros on that thing don't work as you expect. It only allows you to make macros using anything but the sticks wich are require to input stuff except for neutrals.

It only works on replays, and the dev retired before adding spectator support. Plus, relying on input visualization mid-match with the online delay wouldn't even give you an edge, quite the opposite lol.

This is already a thing that existed, macro controllers have been around for a while (and are probably harder to track). The increased access is a problem, but this isn’t some kind of game breaking new development, just makes cheating a bit easier (for people with modded switches)

This way is actually definitely better(for the macro=er) in all regards. Most macro controllers have obvious buttons or attached devices for it, and such controllers are banned on sight at tournaments. Also, most macro controllers are super imprecise, with frame unsyncronization being very common which will drop whatever complex inputs you're trying to do. I've seen several top players try and play around with macro controllers for funsies and it being extremely inconsistent or just straight up not doing certain complex inputs correctly at all. For this, it's a mod on your switch, so you can never tell at a glance if the switch has it, and because it's on the system itself and not just sending input signals on the controller, it's almost completely consistent. That's why it's so much more of a huge concern over just people with modified controllers.

I believe there was also a movement tech that allowed character to move faster by going left and right really fast that was not really humanly possible to do consistently. Wouldn't be surprised as that gets macro'ed for movement as well.

All you have to do is make that EWGF macro mess up the input 20% of the time and now it's undetectable. No idea what the average success rate of that move is, but literally if the macro messed it up just one time during the entire set no one would question if a macro is being used or not

I’ve also heard of people using modified/custom controllers (something called an Arduino was one) that are able to perform sets of inputs automatically. This probably wouldn’t be as much of a problem since I don’t think it’s something you could toggle mid-match, but it wouldn’t show on any input display mod and it wouldn’t require a moddable Nintendo Switch.

It would be useful if the macro was set up to do a specific set of inputs during the 3, 2, 1, GO! countdown that would show up on the input visualizer which could be used to check a replay for a macro or some other subtle clue to catch unwary cheaters.

Like the original input latency mod was open source and people were able to use that to make it work on quickplay, now it got reuploaded and is closed source so no one’s able to make it work on quickplay anymore

I think this is not a big deal. Cheating on nintendo switch is way harder than on pc. And still requires basic skills to pull off. The majority of people who cheat in fps games are do so, because its easy to set up on pc. And they don't need any fundamentals to win. Besides Tekken macro cheaters exist, and they cant compete in higher ranks.

I imagine tourney officials could use the Switch’s barcode thing to determine if the Switch is mod-able. The likely hood of having a post-launch, successfully modded Switch is so low that I don’t think it’d be worth doing or paying someone to do it (if they’re trying to cheat on money matches to make back this hypothetical expense then it’d probably be pretty obvious). If it is mod-able then they tell that person that they can’t use that Switch or (in-person only) have to have some confirmation process to determine if the Switch is still running vanilla software.

Could this mod be (painstakingly and inconveniently) detected by reviewing a match and seeing that a specific input seems to be coming out at the exact same frame after another specific input every time? Like he says Kazuya's move has a 2-frame window, if a player consistently does it on the same frame every time throughout an entire match every match, the probability they can't do that that start to stack up?

This make a lot of sense. I remember playing elite smash and there was this sora I got match with. This sora literally combo every hit from it aerial and not drop it once. No matter how much I try to sdi I just simply could not get out of it. What funny because I could be at 0% and he will perfectly execute perfect aerials to keep me lock in the combo. Perfect nairs connecting to fairs and eventually killing me from the top with up b. Overall what the most sad part is that I still manage to beat the sora. Albeit multiple rematch but I manage to take a game.

Even in Tekken, some of the best Mishima players in the world don’t get EWGF 100% of the time. A missed EWGF input in high level Tekken play, even with some of the best players in the world is more common than you might think. So a Kazuya hitting EVERY single EWGF would be VERY suspicious. I’m not saying they’d be easy to catch or anything like that. But I think it won’t be as big of a deal.

Marcos have been around for over a decade now. I doubt this mod means anything, few players want to cheat in online Smash and a smaller proportion will have access to modifiable Switches. There is a SMB KZbinr I watch that has a controller that can do marcos. He used it a couple times on courses that are impossible without it.

People won't get banned because the author of the mod implemented it in such a way that it can't be detected by the automatic cheat checks. It won't trip any of their alarms and cause action from Nintendo. They also won't be able to tell the difference between a third party controller of a modded Switch, and as far as I'm aware, they don't forbid the former (they just encourage using official/licensed controllers), so they can't ban people over it. Also, you failed to mention that the mod that works online isn't available anymore, so you have to go out of your way to look for it in the right places and asking the right people, which isn't really common knowledge. It sucks that this will act as a crutch to people (a very very low % of players, btw) and remove the skill ceiling on some characters, but let's not act like it's the end of the world lol. Most of these applications are situational at best, not an instant win button. Also, I've talked to some people who have used the mod and it appears that it's currently broken; it only allows for simple triggers, no button holding (the function exists but doesn't work due to a bug), no waiting time between inputs, some actions being broken, etc. So again, it's not gonna be the end of the world or the death of the scene like many people imply.

People are definitely abusing this on Elite Smash. Smash players have no integrity. I'm not entirely against macros for stuff like EWGF, honestly. Even SF6 has official one button specials now. It could be a great accessbility option for some people. Not gonna stop people from climbing the top of the GSP ladder with the cheapest strats out there. The online anti-cheat only checks for desyncs. If it's technically possible, it's a "viable" strat.

These kinds of mods remove skill, execution, and competitiveness from the game, and most importantly, fun. If you can't win in a game without some stupid macro, get better or lmao a different game. Don't cheat. Not only is it wrong itself, but it can cause you to develop the mindset of a cheater, which can manifest in other areas of your life. Getting used to cheating is just going to make things harder in the long term. No one is going to pay a doctor if they know said doctor cheated their way through med school.

I think the solution will unfortunately have to be banning modded Switch setups entirely. Even with almost no mods loaded, the loading times are longer and there's lag on the character selection screen, which would give away a modded setup. Might be a temporary solution if modders find a way to fix the lag though but I doubt it. Nevermind just read that macro conteollers exist anyway.
