My sons both had on Troy Polamalu jerseys and after the game we went to the players parking lot, since we had access because my sons cousin Keiwan Ratliff was playing for the Steelers at the time. While in the parking lot Troy was surrounded by so many grown-ups trying to get his autograph. Most likely so they could turn around and sell the item. After Troy opened the door for his wife he looked over the crowd and saw my 2 sons and I about 25 feet away off in the distance. He then summoned for us to come to him and he then signed both of their jerseys! They still have those jerseys to this very day. My sons Bryce and Bronx are now 20 years old and in college.

I was a really small, skinny little Asian kid growing up near Latrobe in the early 70s. Like most, I was a Steelers fanatic. Must have been 75 or 76, I was 7 or 8, during training camp as the players came out the fans would chase them for autographs. Of course when Joe Greene came out the crowds sprinted. I raced as fast as I could but found myself way back, 3 or 4 deep looking up trying to catch a peek through the seas of bodies, arms, notepads and pens. I was so excited but so disappointed at the same time. Then, almost like divine intervention, the sea of bodies split right in front of me, and this HUGE hand reached way back to me, grabbed my notepad I was clutching tightly, took it, signed it, then parted the sea of bodies and handed his autograph back to me. As much as I love TP, Rod, and JH there is only one greatest Steeler of all time in my book.

I grew up just outside of Latrobe and my dad took me to training camp one year…probably around ‘74-‘76…and as the players came out on to the field, you maybe had a minute to snag an autograph. As Joe came out the crowd that rushed him was immediate. I moved with the crowd but I was a very small kid, a very small Asian(ish) kid. I was very intimidated by the whole scene. When Joe stopped to sign autographs, the closest I got was 3-4 bodies deep. I was looking up through a blockade of Steelers fans catching an occasional gimps of Joe’s face through the swaying shoulders. But then I see a huge hand parting this sea of bodies as it came directly towards me. He grabbed the pen and paper from my hand and I was one of the few autographs he signed that session. That had a HUGE impact on me as a kid. Joe is and will always be my favorite Steeler.

The 76 Steeler defense was the best defense in the history or football. 5 shutouts in the last 9 games. 28 points allowed during those 9 games and just 138 points allowed for the entire season. The whole starting defense for the AFC Pro Bowl that year wore a black helmet with a golden yellow stripe down the middle. 85 Bears had the second best defense in history. Well Mel Blount might have something to say about greatest corner. They did change some rules because of him you know. Not taking anything away from Woodson. He was a great corner no doubt about it. Hhahahah imagine the all time Steeler team. Those two at cornerback. Can you say interception almost every pass play. hahahahhaah with Troy at Safety. I take that back. Interception every passing play. That is if the quarterback isn't laying underneath either Greene, Joe or Kevin. Or TJ or LC or Harrison, or Lloyd. When they try running the ball, then you have to deal with Mr. Lambert and Mr. Ham as well as the previously mentioned guys. God an all time Steeler defensive team looks incredibly scary. Like total offensive yards for the other team at -100 yards. The other teams being other teams all time offenses. The all time Steeler defensive team is without doubt the best all time unit from any team in history. What a freaking nightmare they would be.

To bad, you missed out on the best defensive unit to have ever played. There has never been anything like the Steel Curtain. The Steelers got my attention at the age of 10 when Franco made that catch against the Raiders in the Steelers first ever playoff victory. Next game they lose in the AFC championship to the undefeated Dolphins. Started watching them regularly in 73 and then a die hard fan at the beginning of 74. Been one ever since. The problem with watching the Steel Curtain has been comparing Steeler defenses since then with them. Which is not fair but still happens. The Steelers have had some incredibly talented players since then. But never had so many at the same time as they did back then. The Steelers of the 70's had 9 Hall of Famers that all played at the same time. The 74 draft had 4 of them drafted that year. Swann #1, Lambert was #2, Webster was #3 and Stallworth was #4. How amazing was that draft? Lambert use to tell Swann all the time that he should have been #1. hahahhaha Of course the only thing Swann could do was nervously laugh while looking away. hahahhaha
