[Warning.. lots of speculation incoming] So for what I noticed so far... AQUA: she placed a blessing on Kairi that allowed basically all of KH1 to happen. that blessing let Kairi's heart take refuge in Sora's heart, soiling ansem's plan and eventually setting off the whole heartless sora moment and basically all of the nobody stuff. Kairi also "accidentally" touched Aqua's keyblade giving me the feeling that passing on a keyblade has mainly something to do with some one worthy or similar to the wielder touching the original keyblade, as such leading Kairi to become capable of wielding the keyblade later. TERRA: the big obvious one here is.. he becomes Xehanort, the one that Sora and Co have been battling through KH1 and KH2, or maybe better said, the vessel for Xehanort. Terra's heart itself is kept contained in the armor that you can fight at the end of KH2. He also has done the full right of passage to pass on the keyblade to Riku which is probably why, in KH1, there was the point made that Riku was originally supposed to be the keyblade wielder (that moment in hollow bastion where Sora loses the keyblade etc) since, out of the Destiny Islands trio, Riku is the only one that has gained the power to wield the keyblade through "official means". This might also be the reason why Riku is more aligned with the darkness but I believe it's more about keblade wielders choosing heirs based on those who resemble themselves, not the power turning the chosen into something different. Hence why I think just touching the keyblade of Aqua in Kairi's case is enough to unofficially be the next in line bacause of their resemblance. VENTUS: so there's a lot here.. So the big thing here's is actually not the creation of the X-blade (though it has some interesting call backs) but right at the start when Xehanort tore out Ventus' darkness form his heart. It seems like Sora, being the genius heart-o-mancer that he is apparently, gave a part of his heart to fill the hole that Vanitas left behind, allowing Ventus to become a normal functioning human again. This heart link is the cause for about everything here. First of all this connection is most probably what allowed Sora to become a keyblade wielder to begin with. Although very orthodox I guess touching hearts is similar to touching keyblades in this case but hey, what works... works. Due to the mixing of their hearts however Vanitas took the form of Sora, since Vanitas is basically a representation of the hole in Ventus' heart, which is now filled with Sora's (I know it's rediculous but what else would you expect from Kingdom Hearts). This link however seems to go both ways, leading to the special nobody Roxas. Since nobodies are created when a body has no heart, but sora technically still had a bit of a heart in him, which is the piece of heart he left in Ventus. This is what obviously leads to the reason that Roxas looks like Ventus even though all other nobodies look like an exact copy of their previous self. However I also think this is the reason why Roxas was a "special nobody" since he was the only nobody that actually had a heart, namely the piece of Sora's heart that was in Ventus, leading Roxas to actually have feelings and more. So I probably missed a lot but hey.. some other things I noticed.. the X's in Org XIII's names is now obviously the X in X-blade. With the focus on memories and pain etc in games like Chain of Memories, 358/2 and Re:Coded I start to think that the heart and memories etc are intrinsically intertwined. like you live on in the heart of others because their memories of you exist in them etc. which might be the reason as to why Axel starts to become more human like and seemingly gain feelings since he's building memories in the heart of Roxas, who I think might actually have a heart. Lemme know if anyone else has any ideas and speculations about the story so far ^^

I think the shot you refer to at 7:30 has to do with Japanese cinematography's focus on aspect-to-aspect. That transitioning to a shot of the environment isn't a disengagement, but part of the engagement with the character. It naturally creates a more meditative tone with the dynamic composition.

I think that's a different shot as that one is used as a punchline usually for gag anime; the shot Dan's talking about is more when used as a meditative beat. The big difference being that in the latter the scene resumes instead of pivoting as it does at the end of a joke. Similar trick for opposite effects.

For me, the Braig fight was the hardest in Aqua's playthrough. For Terra it was Terra-Nort, and for Ven it was Vanitas in Ven's heart.

Soon after, the character commits to a certain choice, then the camera pans back to the character (as in back to reality, the physical world), because now is the time to take physical action that moves them towards that decision.

Tried looking up the pan up to sky then cut back to character on google, and I get a quote from The Meloncholy of Haruhi Suzimiya, “If you don't know what to do next, slowly pan the camera and shoot the sky...” That said, probably will try to ask a friend who’s into studying this kind of thing. Otherwise, if I were to wager a guess, its to have the sky set the tone of what’s to come (like looking to the horizon) Aqua is contemplating of what she will do, as the sky is shown that it the gathering of clouds before the storm, the fading of twilight before darkness. EDIT: and the answer I got, a saving technique on animation labour, and a break for the viewer by looking at background scenery. My friend is rather pragmatic.

Aqua is so easily the most narratively respected female character in KH. She also avoids the trap of a lot of characters like her in other very male centric anime type stuff of being constantly talked up as uber compitent and powerful without ever getting to actively accomplish anything significant in the plot. Aqua accomplishes a LOT. She basically singlehandedly stops the second keyblade war after beating Vanitas on 3 separate occasions. She gets good moments in KH 3 too. She doesn't ACCOMPLISH much independently in that game but if their name isn't Sora it's not like most other characters do either really. So um anyway Aqua is cool and I'm glad they didn't waste her potential.

7:30 The kind of shots I notice a lot in the KH games are one that begin in the torso, linger a bit, and then pan up to the face (or maybe not pan up at all). It's such a weird shot to me, but it's used a lot. Another one, like you said, Dan, that I haven't seen many other places.

Those I sort of understand in that they're generally used to avoid revealing the face or identity of a character so there can be a "dramatic" reveal at a later time. I wouldn't say it works particularly well, but I can see what they were going for.

The cinematography you refer to comes to us from anime by way of manga, which often splices panels of landscapes with shots of characters contemplating it. The effect of scanning a whole page of these panels is restful. A lot of low-budget anime used to match manga panel for scene. The habit of making contemplative shots dynamic just sort of organically became part of Japanese animation. I never really thought about it before, but noticing it now, I think the effect is meant to be that you’re looking through the character’s eyes and seeing their reaction simultaneously.

My opinion as to why Braig is so difficult to fight as Aqua? Xehanort has literally ZERO use for her,so Braig has orders to simply kill her. And so Braig obliges,by busting out his terrifying repertoire of space-bending shenanigans to stay out of Aqua's reach while simultaneously giving her a couple hundred new piercings.

Aqua isn't the only one with unique abilities. You saw with Terra, he gained dark magic to go into that drive form. I think he and ventus just have more unique keyblade attacks, rather than magic. As for drive forms, if you think blade charge is cool, check out Ven's Wing Blade.

Remember, in KH1, Kairi lost her heart, but she was left just comatose. Namine didn't come into existence until Kairi's heart left Sora when he became a heartless. This is just what happens to beings of pure light who lose their hearts.

So in Ventus's story, Ven destroys Vanitas and the x-blade during their battle inside his head, but here, Aqua fights Vanitas (possessing Ven) and destroys the x-blade in the real world. Were those two things happening simultaenously? Does the moment where Aqua damages the real-world x-blade correspond to the moment Ventus wins the interior battle? Or is there something I'm missing?

Yes. Ven is fighting Vanitas in his heart at the same time that Venitas is fighting Aqua in the physical world. Aqua can destroy the physical X-blade because it is incomplete, and therefore fragile, because Ven and Vanitas have not rejoined to create a "perfect" whole.

That is a weird sticker page, even weirder than Ven's and Terra's. I thought it would pertain to Fruitball, but it's just her cheering or dancing in a meadow? It IS quite silly, especially compared with her grumpy expression in the Reports menu. We should have Merlin and Yen Sid in the same room. "Where wielders of weapons once waged war." Say THAT three times fast! The slow pan up to the sky is indeed a Japanese storytelling thing, and it's used to indicate a passage of time. Western media most often uses a slow dissolve, but I think Japanese media does this due to the pervasiveness of manga, which, as a print medium, can't really depict a dissolve. Hence, whereas western comics will usually point out time has passed through narration, manga most commonly shows either a single panel of the sky or a series of 3 or more small panels depicting the sky. (Starting in the 2010s, however, pure white blank panels have substituted for this. I have no idea where that came from.) A quick pan up to the sky, on the other hand, indicates a character is looking up at the sky, though the reasons are specific to the circumstances. The Ghost Drive afterimages definitely show how Aqua's Keyblade fighting style is modeled after ballet. Female short-range fighters in video games tend to be like this. The Fire Emblem women in Smash Bros. aren't though! What is the relationship for a D-Link again? Dan talks like as if the player character is controlled by that character, but it looks more like the player character just adopts a fighting style based on that character. The Evil Queen was not listed among the characters for Snow White, it seems. It would have been VERY NICE if Aqua had passed her Keyblade down to Kairi, but that just isn't the case. I don't think it is, at least.

I really liked Aqua as a character, but... she didn't really have a real purpose in this story. Ventus is tightly connected to Vanitas, Terra to Xehanort, but Aqua was just going world to world cleaning up the messes the guys had made. If you deleted Aqua from the story, nothing much would change. Despite being a playable character, she still had little to no agency. Those couple of fights between her and Vanitas were inconsequential, and her talk with Sora and Riku isn't nearly as meaningful as the one between Terra and Riku, moreover it only detracts from Sora's character. It's as if Sora needed to be told to look after Riku, and wouldn't have considered doing it on his own. The secrets she was bestowed for being a Kayblade Master are likely void, and she interacted with none of the main characters after the initial chapter of this story. Aqua's a strong female character, but she wasn't given anything meaningful to do, which is a real shame. I would have loved seeing her take meaningful and difficult decisions, and having a real impact on the story and the characters in it.

He woulda got everything he wanted, the X-Blade and the body, if it weren't for Aqua and Mickey being a thorn in his side. Also, these characters better come back in III, right? By all I mainly mean Aqua because she's clearly the best, but with her armor and a certain III trailer I vaguely remember but didn't understand at the time, I don't know how much hope there is...I think I remember you getting to play Aqua in a III demo, and I would pay money to have some Aqua and/or Kairi playtime in III if it isn't already there.

The Ghost Drive kind of reminds me of stuff Vanitas does in your fights against him. Also, I think BBS has my favorite way to handle commands and all. But I will admit, that my favorite 'Drive' or such is the KH2 Drive Forms. Something about em still just feels great for me over all, though I did enjoy Dimension Links. I also like how KH2 had reaction abilities for a lot of enemies and the bosses that gave some fun ways to knock em outta stuff. I have to say, though, that while Kingdom Hearts 3 has some good gameplay, I don't care for the weapon form changes and all. But that's mostly cause it feels like there's not enough variety, or that moves I'd love to do more freely is just not available (Strike Raid or Slide Dash or all). And I openly admit, I did not care for the Attractions.

Tha'ts... actually a good question. Normally a nobody appears when someone becomes a heartless. But Namine appeared when Kairi's heart was inside Sora. So there SHOULD be another Namine esque Nobody-anomaly for Ventus, since his heart is currently elsewhere.

copout answer, technically Ventus is the Nobody while Vanitas is the Heartless since Nort split the heart in two, also technically his heart is still on his body but tied to Sora's which is why he can be such a weird anomaly

Thinking the same thing. I'm guessing it was when Sora and co were battling the 1000 heartless, and there was that ultra awkward scene of Xemnas slowly walking down stairs for 3 minutes.
