Playing 4K Films on PS5 - Help or Opinion Wanted

As far as I’m aware the PS5 is not a great 4k Blu Ray player. Also massively depends on the movie and quality of any 4k restoration work if it’s an old movie released. I personally have only watched 4k through streaming and it really does depend on the what movie it is quality wise, some I’m massively impressed with, others complete opposite. Recently watched 4k Howard the Duck and couldn’t believe how great that looked, Lea Thompson in 4k. Just awesome.

PS5 is a competent enough 4K player. It is a massive improvement over streaming due to its higher bitrate and lossless audio. Streaming is fine, but the compression kills quite a bit of detail.

@@MrEdcar007 I don’t doubt that the PS5 4k is better than streaming, but I certainly can’t complain about quality, unless it’s a poor job in the first place. I am generally a physical purchase kinda guy, so still do mainly with games. I got sick though I re buying the same movies again and again, VHS, DVD and Blu Ray, I’m not going down the 4k route unless it’s digital now, especially as most movies are 3 - 4 quid after 6 - 12 months. I still feel quality of 4k depends more on the release than how you are watching it at the end of the day.

@@nintendiveYes, I'm a physical buyer too. The film I watched was Avengers Infinity War which, I assume, would be of decent 4k quality. I know the bluray version would upscale but the difference was imperceptible to me. I watched Bullet Train on Netflix last night and it just seemed more colorful and vibrant than my 4ks even though it was 1080.

@@kennyrh9269 Seems strange Kenny why you cannot notice any difference on the 4k, I have just looked at reviews for Avengers Infinity War 4k version, seems to get pretty well reviewed. If I have time later I have the Blu Ray, I may try that and also the 4k version on Disney and see if I can tell the difference.

@@kennyrh9269 I assume the PS5 is connected to the (presumably) 4K tv through a *high*-quality DisplayPort cable? I've come to realize that not all cables are equal, and getting an expensive one for anything that actually needs to push a decent amount of data is of great importance. You could try forking out for a better cable and see if that helps.

check your viewing distance. I have a 43" 4k tv and I have to sit about 5 feet in front of it to be able to see the difference between 1080P and 4k. hope that helps!

Thanks not a problem for me because I'm only 3-4 feet away. My TV is similar screen size to yours.

I read somewhere that to really see 4k properly that the viewer shouldn't ideally be more than say 1,5 meters away from the tv set.Any further back and the human eye can't really spot the difference between 4k and HD.Maybe a factor perhaps?

Hello mate, I wonder if it has something to do with Dolby Vision. Do your 4K movies say anything about Dolby Vision on the box? I don't think the PS5 supports it so that might be why. My other suggestion would be to have a look at the mode your TV is in such as changing it from Game mode to Movie or Cinema mode if your TV does that. Hope you solve it soon. I still believe that a competent PC setup with a bluyray/dvd drive and VLC media player cannot be overtaken. I have tried my PS5 and it definitely is a good basic player, but I always gravitate to PC for how easy it is to modify and customize. Hope it helps! Also not stupid at all, I wish I get to your age feeling as fresh as you seem and still enjoying videogames.

Not an option for me because my PC setup is in an awkward place. I couldn't sit comfortably to watch films.
