Hi Gary. Yes, I don't mind a bit of wear on vintage second hand books but with books I've bought new - I like to keep them that way. It really annoys me when I see people reading a book with the already read pages tucked under. Must say I've never cracked a spine in my life. All the very best Kenny. PS my regards to Lucille.

Hi Kenny, was never really a comic man except when I was much much younger and I would get the UK editions of the Marvel comics put out by Power. My favourite characters being Thor and Dr Strange thanks to my love of Norse mythology and the weird and supernatural. Wish I still had them!" I have recently however got into them and especially the EC comics and Eerie / Creepy comics of which I've bought a couple of omnibus editions. Were you a reader of the comics yourself as well as a collector of the related paperbacks? Don't really think the small size of the paperbacks really work for the comics, though worth having for the covers. Particularly like the House of Mystery and Tales from the Crypt books. BTW was wondering recently, are superheroes strictly considered SF? Loved seeing your collection as always... Peter

Hello Peter, yes I've been an avid comics reader since the black and white Australian DC comics reprints that got distributed over here some 65 years ago. When the US colour DC comics started distribution in 1960 I spent all my pocket money on them. Later on when I started earning enough I would buy EVERY DC and Marvel comic each month. For the same price now I can buy about 4. Until a few years ago when comics became samey and uninteresting I would say I've been a comic book collector longer than an SF book hoarder. The comic related paperbacks were just a byproduct. Yes you're right these are not a good format but I just love those Frazetta horror covers. And the Wrightson HOMs in particular. Interesting question about superheroes as SF. I would say that heroes like Batman, The Flash and Swamp Thing, say, are not. But with comics like Superman, Green Lantern or Legion of Superheroes for instance I would say definitely yes because those include off-planet and futuristic stories. Marvel have their own sub-genre of SF characters where the stories are all cosmic adventures. All best Kenny.

Good collection of comic book books. Not a fan of the "Batman", "Superman" and "Hulk" comics though. I liked DC's "Swamp Thing". I read the "Blackmark" graphic novel in "Savage Sword of Conan". The EC comics were the great comic books of the 1950s.

Swamp Thing was a classic title both in the 70s Berni Wrightson era and the 80s when Alan Moore took over. Yes, I had a feeling that I'd seen the Blackmark in mag format, pity it was so short--lived. EC books were quite phenomenal in the 50s and those paperbacks are some of my favourites in all my book collection.

Congrats on your DAW 100 completion. The Michael Coney 'Friends Come In Boxes' is a dark one for him, I used to have that edition but I upgraded to Gollancz hardcover 1st. I covered that Michael Shea in my video on him about 18 months ago, a very collectable book. Most of my DAW collection is oddities that no-one else issued, like the Lory. I have loads of the titles you show here. I like cherry picking DAW myself but I always understand the lure of completism with the ol yellow spines...

Thanks Stephen. Collecting all the DAW yellows seemed like a good idea at the time - now I'm not so sure. The prices of many of the ones I need are bonkers but it's too late to get cold feet now. Y'know I 've never read a Coney novel, shocking I know. Which one would you consider a good place to start ? Talking Michael Shea, some joker's got a Nifft The Lean up on ebay UK. Fifty quid with a spine so faded that you can barely see the authors name in red. What's wrong with these people?
@outlawbookselleroriginal
@outlawbookselleroriginal 16 күн бұрын
@@kennyrh9269 Thing is, once you commit to completism, you have to follow through once you get to a certain point. That's why I've put collecting on a hiatus- which will last around 6 months- as I simply don't have the space and money, plus my TBR runs to around 300 books (as I work in a bookshop as well, the temptation and staff discount plus freebies make things even more intense). So I'm just reading now, not buying, though I will return to the fray next year. Re Shea, his stuff never had many printings and his reputation has grown- and I'm one of the people responsible for this: I put 'Nift The Lean' in my book '100 Must Read Fantasy Novels' and the vodeo I did about him a while back has seen a lot of views. He's very acclaimed in Horror circles too and Del Toro's recent TV series adapted his most celebrated story, so the prices have been pushed up very high. Yet no-one in the Uk seems to want to reissue his work...

@@outlawbookselleroriginalIt's all becoming a bit of an unhealthy obsession to be honest. The problem for me is not availability, it's cost. The 3 Strugatskis are 40 quid+ and the later Philip Dicks are just at prices that the US retailers make up as they go along. The 2 Imaros are gonna be the real killer at 70 quid + each. Then there's US postage which is going to be the real stumbling block. Somebody mentioned to me that some of the more recent Shea books clock in at three figures. Don't know how true that is but it would rhyme with what you said. Your embargo is probably the sanest thing I've encountered of late. Also requested a run through the complete collection when it's completed so it's nice to see you have started. Always thought it was odd that DAW did the best horror volumes given that I don't think they dabbled in the horror genre otherwise (with the exception of the Brian Lumley). I too was lucky to pick up the Koontz book very early on for £3-4. I did have those same editions of "Spell of the Witch World" and "Green Phoenix". Andre Norton was really Alice Norton of course, and should be respected as an early female SF author. Thomas Burnet Swan's novel is very good, and is basically a retelling of Virgil's "Aeneid". I think that the George Barr cover is also very good. "We Can Build You" is I think a flawlessly written novel, it's flawed only in experimentation. It made a very big impression on me though when I first read it. I have the first British paperback/edition with the Peter Tybus cover, which I prefer to the Daw one. "The Book of Philip K. Dick" was called "The Turning Wheel" in Britain", the titular title referring to what I think is one of his very best short stories. The Philip J. Farmer book is just another one in the long list of his dreary novels.

Must admit T B Swann is not to my taste although, having said that, I haven't read any so maybe shouldn't judge. @@kennyrh9269 "Green Phoenix" is probably different to what you think. It's more than just an SF novel about the mythical past. "We Can Build You" is an odd mixture of SF and general fiction. I read all the Elric’s and others in the Lancer and Berkley paperbacks of the late 60s to 2000, so I figured i read almost all, but Moorcock, bless him, wrote a ton of work post 2000 that i must catch up on, including a new Elric that came out last year. I am behind in my time, as Bob Cratchit would say. The Shea book is his first novel, but more importantly it is an authorized sequel to Jack Vance’s Dying Earth books -- and a damn good one! That George Barr cover is just terrific. George was a great artist and a great guy. He did the cover art on one book i reprinted years ago in my Gryphon Books line by Richard A Lupoff. What you were saying about some of the later, higher numbered DAWs being harder to get than the earlier ones: this probably goes back to what Dorset Bob and Stephen E. Andrews have remarked upon regarding the size of print runs reducing decade on decade. So '80s paperbacks would have had smaller print runs than in the '70s, and '90s books smaller again compared to the '80s. Until you get to the absurd situation where *Michael Shea* Baen paperbacks published 24 years ago in 2000 are worth over a hundred quid each! 🤪 Robert Charles Wilson who, IMHO, is probably the best "all round"* science fiction writer since Bob Shaw, had his biggest commercial success with _Spin_ in 2005. Won the Hugo, paperback had at least a dozen print runs. The two sequels, published 2007 and 2011, I read this month and are extremely good, had only a single print run each. Now, only a dozen or so years later, dealers are asking £15-£20 for the paperbacks of each of those two sequels. And - hey! - they weren't even paperback originals. In fact, from what I can gather, the paperbacks are worth just as much as the hardbacks - which is VERY unusual! 🤨 *"All round" meaning the quality of his prose, his characterization and his cosmic ideas.
@kennyrh9269
@kennyrh9269 27 күн бұрын
The value of SF paperbacks has always been a mystery to me. I recently did a video about Philip K Dick's earlier PBs and how the Ace paperback originals - and therefore true first editions - were so moderately priced at around £20-25 in the States. Now had these been hardbacks they would be in the £2-300 bracket. Then it occurred to me that mass market pbs would have a significantly larger print run so that must be, as you say, the reason. I don't know what's going on with Shea books however. His early DAW Quest for Simbilis is a bugger to find, Nifft The Lean is silly money and those Baen books that I was unaware of until you told me about them are just bonkers. Also a factor I feel is what I quoted as The Sheep Effect where prices just follow the leader. Some mug decides a run-of-the-mill pb asking price should be a tenner then everybody else decides to offer at 9.99. That then becomes the standard. Even outliers like the Ace Special edition of The Left Hand Of Darkness follows the print run pattern. The pb averages out at 100 quid which you would think is fair for a true first but you'll need a second mortage to buy the first hardback thus with the smaller print run. It's a shame that we as collectors are never privy to the size of print runs. Might give us a better understanding of the maze that is overpricing.

A US dealer with a fantastic selection of books - will you stop with the temptations Kenny you know I'm a weak willed man! The Freas cover for the Coney book is one of my favourites - though his cover for the Kurland is a disappointment (looks like a bog standard crime novel cover). I like the cover on the Peter Dickinson too. Only have 2 of the Van Vogt books from DAW - very rarely seen. Would love to get the Moorcocks too - also rarely seen. I was hoping that the box of Moorcock books that Michael Moon had got in would include some of them but unfortunately there were all the usual UK editions. I loved seeing all of these as you are getting to the ones I've never seen before (with so many brilliant covers). Didn't know they did a best of European SF series of books. You do know that once you reach 100% you're going to have to go through them all again and upgrade all those with faded / creased spines 🤣🤣

Hi Peter. US is the only option for me now and I'm glad I found and used him first. He has plenty of books other than DAW that I can use but not yet. Kelly Freas did some top covers for DAW but that Claws That Catch one is my favourite. It's strange but for some reason Van Vogt, Simak, Piserchia, certain Vance and Moorcocks are scarcely seen in the UK even though all of them did quite a few books. Stuff like the Star Winds by Bayley never. I was surprised to see how abundant and cheap a lot of these books were because many of them I've not seen in 2 years of DAW collecting. And, believe me, I've searched all over in the UK. I've even run out at Graham Holroyd now so gawd knows what happens next. Those 2 European SF books are just about as obscure as you can get. Delighted with those. As for upgrades, I'm trying not to think about it 😱

Hi Kenny. Weird Stories by Gary Lovisi looks right up my street - horror and pulp being my favourites - will definitely be investing. The Snow Queen was one of the few SF / Fantasy novels that survived my purge - so you can tell that I enjoyed it very much. Great pick ups of the Moorcock comics - I'd have definitely taken advantage of them at that price - it's tempting me to invest in them new (but I really shouldn't). Showing the Michael Shea makes me even more grateful that I managed to pick up both his books for so cheap a price.

Hello Peter. Yes I thought of you straight away when I purchased mine. Pulp style is right up my street after all The Shadow books I've read. Snow Queen normally wouldn't be to my taste but I'm trying to collect all the Hugo winning novels and that cover made that a no-brainer. As far as the Moorcock graphic novels go, I was brassed off that they didn't have any more. But then I'm a greedy boy. Can't figure out the Shea prices then again the prices of the later Philip Dick DAWs and certain Tanith Lee also the 3 books by the Strugatskis are pretty heavy - even in the US. The 2 Imaro books have gone stratospheric for some reason. So, as you can see, I have my work cut out. All best Kenny.

Ah, Henry Kuttner! 😌 He and his partner/collaborator C. L. Moore were to Golden Age science fiction what the Dillons were to art. 👍 As commented on a recent video, earlier this month I _very_ carefully read my Baen Books editions of Michael Shea's _The Incompleat Nifft_ and _The A'Rak,_ both published in 2000. I bought them for £4.95 each at the time... and, yet, despite only being 24 years old the prices dealers are now asking for those paperbacks is NUTS! 😱 Cracking novels, thoroughly enjoyed them! 😁

Hi Paul. I know exactly what you mean about the Shea books. Same with DAW - the prices on his two books are bonkers. This bloke must be so popular that nobody wants to part with his stuff. I assume they had the same print run as all the other books so why the inflation I have no idea. Not only is Kuttner a top writer his old early 60s books all have great covers, both US and UK.

enjoyed part two as much as part one, kenny. thanks! i'm here in the united states so appreciate the info about the seller here. i see the relevant info in a reply to another comment so will just use the info there. many, many thanks! it is indeed a shame about prices. i've seen quite a few books here and there that i've wanted to purchase but the price is just too much for what's on offer. or at least that's what i think. but no worries. the hunt continues! and, of course, that's half the fun, right? cheers

Thanks very much. I don't think vintage book prices are quite as inflated in the US as they are in the UK, especially when you're dealing with well-priced retailers like Graham Holroyd. Even with the hefty postage I can get books unseen over here at the same price that some ebay dealers charge for a single common books As you say though it's all good fun..

Nice haul Kenny. Congrats on getting hold of the missing Ace Special, and for such a good price too! Patience is a virtue, and all that. I've been slowly accumulating the Women's Press SF books, but I'm not actively seeking them. Yet. I like the livery and the artwork. 👍

Hi there. Yes I'll give you the details step by step 1 Go to abebooks.co.uk 2 In the search engine where it says "keyword or ISBN" enter "Graham Holroyd" and hit search 3 Look at the list that will come up and click on the title of any book with his name on it and that will bring up his homepage. 4 Scroll halfway down and you will see (in blue) "visit sellers storefront" Another search engine will appear. Hit "more search options" and you can then look for what you want. Hope that helps. Any problem get back to me.

congratulations on number 37! very nice copy of the left hand of darkness. i've got a copy of a wizard of earthsea though the spine is a wee bit cracked. alas! the more vintage paperbacks i pick up the more i like those older covers. i don't mind the condition too much either. it's nice see, as you say, that books are being read as for those daw books....only one away from a complete set for the first 100 and only three away from the first 200? damn. you're doing very well indeed part two of your video might have to wait until tomorrow cheers

Thanks. It was quite a chase but glad I didn't cave in and pay silly money for it. My Wizard of Earthsea is, fortunately, near mint. I love the DAW artwork of course but the late 1950s and early 1960s are just outstanding with art by Richard Powers, Kelly Freas and others. I'm delighted have the first 100 DAW bar one because they have great nostalgic value to me.

Hi Kenny, Just paid a visit to my local 2nd hand bookshop yesterday as they posted on Facebook that they had just got in a box of Moorcock books. Picked up a few including that edition of Behold The man (which I've never actually read). Though I was a big Moorcock fan I have to admit that back in the day the Jerry Cornelius books were the ones I liked least. A while back I picked up a slip-cased edition of 4 Cornelius books - should really give them another chance. My favourite Moorcock books outside of the Eternal Champion ones were Gloriana, and The Dancers At The End Of Time series. Read Ringworld many years ago - remember not really enjoying it all that much. A more recent read that also proved to be a bit of a disappointment was Gateway - expected to like that one. It's becoming a bit of a theme in that books I expect to enjoy I don't eg Gateway, Man In The High Castle, Puppet Masters, The Demolished Man, while those I expect to maybe struggle with I end up enjoying such as Neuromancer, Slaughterhouse 5, and Do Androids Dream (because of my earlier problem with Castle). Loved City back in the day - another that I should reread. Agree totally about those Frazetta covers - superb stuff. Roll on the next DAW update! Cheers... Peter

Hi Peter. As far as Moorcock goes I have always loved the Elric books. I just finished the entire saga a few weeks back - 7 volumes all 2--300 pages on average. Really enjoyed it though. I've never really fancied the Cornelius books for some reason although I have enjoyed a fair bit of Moorcocks new wave stuff. As you say many prominent SF novels tend to disappoint. When I was doing my Hugo thing of trying to read all the winners I found quite a few less than rewarding. Canticle For Leibowitz, Ringworld, Man In The High Castle, Stranger in a Strange Land and A Case of Conscience to name just a few. I think it's the weight of expectation that comes into play. I could run a list of a dozen cover artists that I really love but Frazetta is king. You're wish is granted . . .DAW double video being prepared as we speak. Take care Kenny.
