hi, kenny.i have to agree: a few disappointing don maitz covers there at the beginning of this run. nice to see him back in the saddle as it were for some later covers like the one for 3i73, the keeper's price, and 387, the green gods. not sure what to make of that cover for 381, jack vance's the many worlds of magnus ridolph, but the one for 399 was very eye-catching; it's that open mouth that does it. wild. also, that doris piserchia cover for 399's the spinner was indeed very interesting, makes me want to check out the story. that reminds me of a quick question i'd like to ask: have you read any of those dumarest books by e. c. tubb? they are catching my fancy and i'm wondering how entertaining the story is. looks like there's quite a few of them! ;) at any rate, thanks as always and until next time.... cheers

Kenny, great fun video. Nice books, some of my favorites too. The Ace Lord of the Rings was not approved by Tolkien. Wollheim, the Ace editor found that through the copyright law in the US the books were in the public domain, but Tolkien was upset by that. He soon had the books reprinted by Ballantine in authorized editions. Thus the copyright statement by him in the box on the book. Those 3 Ace pbs are scarce in nice condition. I love Don Maitz’s art and even did an interview with him a few years ago for Illustration magazine. He is a great guy and married to the terrific fantasy author and artist Janny Wurts. Keep up the great work, always a joy to see your videos. Hope you are doing well on those DAW yellow spines!

Hi Gary. Yes, I've always had a soft spot for Swords and Sorcery since the very early days of collecting. I love the Moorcock Elrics - great character and good stories. Strangely enough I knew nothing about the Ace Tolkiens until quite recently. I'm not a great LOTR fan and bought these many years ago because I loved the covers. Seems as though I won't complete the trilogy given the high prices. I think Don Maitz is my very favourite sf and fantasy artist. His work is just plain beautiful. I've completed my DAW yellow spine collection now and there's a video up from a few days ago. Always a pleasure to hear from you. Take care Kenny.

"A Maze of Death" was written near the end of the 1960s, later than his more "famous" novels, and is in transit. It's slick and fun to read though just as it is powerful and disturbing. "Deus Irae" should have been written about ten years before it was published, which was why Dick needed a co-author to finally get it finished. I don't think it really worked with Zelazny.

I bought the illustrated SF encyclopedia by John Clute brand new, full price, when it came out in '95! 👍 It's my favourite reference book - got Clute to sign it years later at a con in Glasgow. 🤗 It must say, I think The PKDs with the Bob Pepper covers are one of the most perfect marriages of author and artist! 👌 Right up there with the Ace and Bluejay Books reissues of Harlan Ellison with cover art by Barclay Shaw (of which I have all 16; earlier this year I acquired his _very_ scarce artbook _Electric Dreams_ - from World Of Books! 🤣). And Tanith Lee & Don Maitz... now there's a marriage made in heaven! 😍

Blimey mate, you lugged that monster about at a con just to get it signed. Great stuff !! Now tell me about these Harlan Ellison Bluejay books. I'm a card-carrying disciple of his but have never heard of those. Yes, there are some real bargains to be found at WOB - if only they were a bit more trustworthy with their listing pics. They have a DAW book I need but I can guarantee it will be a UK copy. Agreed, those Maitz covers for the Tanith Lee books are absolutely exquisite.
@paulcampbell6003Ай бұрын
@@kennyrh9269 The Bluejay paperbacks (four of them, a bit bigger than a UK B-format) came out in the mid-'80s. I bought mine over the course of a few years in the latter half of the '90s. They are utterly gone now: You never see them anywhere. Bluejay only lasted about four years but they did the most beautiful paperbacks. But forget collecting them. They're hen's teeth, and if they do turn up online in the US they're about a hundred quid each for any of them, no matter who the author is. I have the four Ellisons and one Sturgeon and that's it.

I have that same edition of "Lord of Light". The cover is quite stunning. The SF Masterworks series kept classic SF alive. Roger Zelazny is a very good author, but "Lord of Light" is rather flimsy I think. "The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch" is a great SF novel. Like the best of Dick's novels, it's well written, which is why I prefer it to "Ubik", whose prose is weak I think. You might think differently though, this is also a personal choice.
@kennyrh9269Ай бұрын
I've not read either of those so I can't comment. I read Zelazny's This Immortal and Rose for Ecclesiastes and I don't care for his writing style at all. Didn't like either of those BTW. Yes, love those old Masterworks. They just have a great look and feel about them so I can't understand why they changed the livery for the latest series.
@expressoricАй бұрын
@@kennyrh9269 If you liked "Martian Time-Slip", you'll probably like "The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch", and probably "Ubik" too. Zelazny is very literary but what he writes about isn't very solid. I think I preferred "This Immortal", but I'm not so keen on either of them. I think that there's probably commercial reasons for the changes in their design.

Hi Kenny, just when I thought I'd get back on track I came down with a bad cold - so apologies again for being late to the party! Brian Lumley is a favourite author - have 2 of the 3 DAW printed - would love to get the 3rd. The Lumleys, Moorcocks and the horror anthologies are probably the ones that sit at the top of the wants list. Do not like the cover for the Michael Kurland - looks like a bog standard crime novel. Would love the Leiber as he's another author I've always enjoyed (or at least his horror and fantasy). I came across a seller on eBay last week who had 25 yellow spine DAW books for sale which looked in decent condition and the average price was only £3. Unfortunately I had 10 of them already and the seller wouldn't split the the bundle 😥. Maybe I should have still gone for them, but didn't like the idea of paying 30 odd quid for books that I'd just get rid of! Cheers... Peter
@kennyrh9269Ай бұрын
Hello Peter. Nice to hear from you. I know exactly how you've felt because I was laid low with a tedious cold also. I think a lot of people have. Sadly the Lumley's are getting pricier now but, then, aren't they all. Strangely enough the horror titles seem to be the most popular. Yes that Kurland is bloody horrible and I was amazed to find it was a Kelly Freas. I know that bundles can be a pain in the butt when sellers won't split them out. I've had no luck with US sellers because ebay control the postage. Still 5 or 6 quid a lump ain't bad for nice condition DAWs these days. All those duplicates though . . .I see your point. Believe it or not I just paid 150 for 3 of the scarcest. No choice because the prices are set in stone once some mug sticks them up at an inflated price. Anyway keep looking mate and all the very best Kenny.

Hi. Yes I've been doing a lot of research on US and Canadian DAW prices and, quite honestly it's getting ridiculous. There are certain titles on Abe books where some dealers are wanting £200 plus for near mint copies. You can get a scarce Arkham House hardback for less than that. As for charity shops I don't understand charging high prices when the items cost them nothing. Just knock everything out at a pound a copy and get the stuff out the door. I've still got Nos 201 to 300 to talk about so stay tuned.
