This is why I check to see if everyone's played it, and if they have, ever so not subtly change a lot of things. It'll create a new experience hopefully for the players, and if they lied about playing it before, sometimes they'll rush straight to the original spot and out themselves.

I once saw SkyDieRay cover this, I think in an r/greentext. Rogue knew every trap placement, every loot box, every mimic. DM had enough when Rogue bought climbing gear. Rogue: “I alone scale the tower from the outside, go to the 23rd floor, and enter through the window.” DM: “Every enemy in the tower is there waiting for you. You have one round before we roll initiative.” Rogue: “That’s not how it is in the book!” DM, smiling: “In the what?” Rogue: “I dive out the window.” DM: “Acrobatics check to catch the rope.” Dice: Fail. DM: “Let me see, 12’ per floor, 23 floors up… [lots and lots of clattering d6’s] Yeah, you dead.” I guess the BBEG was tired of having all his loot stolen.

@@Remagenify I think most, if not all, of the modules are made with the intent that the DM is going add their own twists to the adventure. I've DM'd White Plume Mountain from Tales Of The Yawning Portal about half-a-dozen times now, but I make sure that no two runs are the same. I even ran a horror themed one for Halloween, which everyone loved.

I literally just started watching Critical Role before our campaign and the first quest we did was (SPOILER WARNING: RAT) The quest where daughter was a rat. She scampered past me and I was like "Ah, I see what this is, pretend you don't know". The DM knew I knew and I wasn't going to participate in puzzle but then one of my friends said "Wait, you're a Tabaxi, shouldn't you chase that?" And I'd like to note: I made my cat the most cat cat, down to being a Sorcerer because I heard they gain magic by sleeping (don't remember where I heard that but meh) so ofc I chased it, rolled well and chose the right direction in a 50/50. Mage hand grabbed her and brought her back. Only time I didn't want to role well...

The worst part: Knowing, but not being able to _act_ on that knowledge, because that's meta. :'D "Oh yes, hello old friend-npc-who-is-gonna-stab-us-in-the-back-later, look how happily and ignorantly my character is shaking your hand right now! Would you break this naïve little fresh adventurer's heart? Would you? Would you?? Oh, I know you will..."

Both can be the traitor. Switch it up depending on who the party adopts. Third time through, whoever is adopted acts shady, but it’s actually the shunned character as an act of revenge.

Also, I saw Puffin Forest covering Hoard of the Dragon Queen before my current DM suggested and started running it. So I know about the 2 big challenges. I designed my character before learning that. She isn’t the type to activate/participate in those challenges, aside from maybe barricading the keep. But if it happens, it happens. I won’t Metagame away from that challenge.

Highrollers did this great. One of the players had done through the entire module before, so he switched a lot of things up on them. Adding in an extra plan for Strahd beyond just the girl. And actually killing off one of the major NPC's that drop lore. So the player had no idea if his knowledge from the module would even help. Some bits were the same, but large parts deviated massively, so he couldn't have metagame'd it even if he'd wanted to

In my previous World of Darkness campaign I DMed, I gave my players copies of their starting characters about midway through the campaign and started them off where the whole thing began. They were really confused, asking if I'd decided to reboot the thing and stuff like that. I left the whole thing largely unanswered, giving rather ambiguous replies, so they just went along with it. They were a mix of annoyed and excited that they got to start out form square one, allowing for a bit of meta gaming since they already knew where a bunch of stuff was, when stuff would happen and what kind of people they'd encounter. They were just small things at first, and I was completely fine with it, but as soon as they tried to deviate majorly from what they had done, weird things started to happen. First they just thought I abused my "power as a DM" (or ST, "storyteller", as it is referred to in WoD) to ward off meta gaming, but I just said "Nope". One of my players instantly caught onto what was going on, but wanted to confirm it before informing the rest of the party. She kept on doing just plain weird shit, which instantly failed or resulted in things that would lead them to the same stuff that happened last time. Things like setting buildings on fire, kicking people, punching police officers, and even biting down on high voltage wires. Another player caught on and went on a suicide rampage that failed spectacularly, and both of the players' characters informed the party that they were in some kind of fake world, like a dream or a memory. Most of the other characters were sceptical at first, before the suicidal guy told one of them to load his gun with a full magazine and fire one bullet anywhere. They did so, not entirely seeing his point until he put the gun to his temple and fired off a shot. Or rather, tried to. The gun just clicked as if it was empty, since his suicide had not occurred in the original story, and as soon as he pointed the gun elsewhere, it fired normally, but when he pointed the gun at either of them, it just clicked again. That convinced them enough, so they retraced their steps from the last session, realizing that they had been poisoned and placed in some kind of ritual trance and that they had accidentally walked into the main base of the cult they had been following when they unknowingly checked into that hotel. I had given hints that when they did things that deviated from their memories, other odd things started happening in response (as whatever held them there was trying to correct the story again), but only when they did small things that weren't largely influential on the story as a whole. So, they did the most logical thing they could think of that didn't largely affect the story but still largely affected it: nothing. As a result, the dream spell collapsed and they were freed in the middle of the ongoing ritual, managing to avoid becoming sacrifices to the cult's otherworldly being they worshipped. It was a really fun mission, both for me to plan and (when they realized I wasn't just being an asshole) for them to play through. It was also really fun to watch them wrap their heads around the whole thing. I like doing memory-related stuff!

My group recently rebooted a premade campaign for several reasons. We didn't get very far but the DM asked us if we wanted to play through the beginning again. Since we had new characters, we decided that yes, it was better, just to see what new dynamics would settle between us. When we arrived at the first dungeon, some goblins escaped by a door and I followed them. I knew where they were going and I knew the boss was just down the stairs. However, my character makes very bad decisions so when he passed the door and saw 3 other doors, he just went "ok, no time to think, I'll decide with head-or-tails". To which my DM said there were 3 doors and to which I answered "head for the door on the left, tails for the doors on the right and then head-or-tails again to decided between the first or the second if I get the ones on the right". I got tails. The stairs were on the other side, which means I stormed through the labyrinth of doors on the wrong side while yelling after goblins that didn't go that way, while perfectly knowing I was going the wrong way. That was fun.

If I could go back to the start of my last Campaign with all my knowledge, I wouldn't want to do anything different. The arc my character went through was mostly improvised and he was never meant to be more than build that I was wanting to play, but between being turned into a child, being betrayed ( the whole party agreed that was the worst part of the game ), repeatedly humbled, forced to see his kind as a bunch of shivering children, mindlessly following tradition and waiting for their god to save them, and pulling himself out of own stuck in a sense of Stagnation, he came out as a true Hero. You can't plan for that. 😎 Also, being a Max level Wizard makes DMs want to just quit the game or plan whole dungeons around stopping you from bullshiting encounters

The dm knew I knew the campaign- he used my copy, after all- but we colluded to try and make my being there be a net positive. I did my best to not meta- generally leaving actual decisions to the others- and planned my character to be as narratively interesting as possible (which wasn't much, CoS is pretty inflexible to the players all things considered, little room to be a part of the world or shape it, beyond the obvious vampire slaying to be done).

Not quite same, but I once ran two Dark heresy campaigns simultaneously(mostly, once a week for each group). Twist is, it was the same custom campaign for both groups and they had..... varying results. Couple of highlights: Group A joined a pit fighting tournament to get information and while doing so bet most of their money on the lucky chosen who had to be their inside man. After various 1-on-1 fights and a half dead Arnold look-alike, hey got their info and the money. Group B found out where the fights were going to happen and knew they needed the info from there, so they planned a police raid on the place at the night of the fight. After interrogation(or torture) they got their info.

Going through it a second time with the same character, i aimed to re-create those moments as much as possible. 1. My character became the party cook. (Success!) 2. Another player's character won the brawl (to be fair, it fit them better, as my character was reluctant the first time, and theirs was eager) 3. I been playing pathfinder: wrath of the rigthious lately. One of the best RPG games made IMO. Despite having played basically every other RPG game around it still surprised me with some plot twists. For a start the traitors, while seen coming, have real depth to them. Really brings out the solid reasons for the unpleasent events they go through. Then we got things like multiple paths that you can take in the game, which can lead to things like being either a angel, demon, some sort of "fey" with a pet dragon... Which joins in conversations as well. All while running a kingdom with armies, buildings and questing around. It's as overwhelming as it sounds and in the best possible way. The "second" time would be Baldur's Gate 2 for me. Baldur's Gate 1 was the first. Technically there's Knights of the old republic but that's more sci fi then D&D. Clearly the Bladur's gate games paved the way for pathfinder. I'd call the original pathfinder game average, while wrath of the rigthious improves in everything. Pretty much like how BG2 is better then 1 basically. Actually, now that I think about it, it's Neverwinter Nights 1 that was my second D&D game. What stands out the most is being able to talk to the kobolds instead of being forced to fight them. And their dragon leader too. One's even a companion. This would be in the expansion packs though, not the base game. BG2, NW1, and Pathfinder wrath of the rigthious seem to do player choice and different race characters better. It's the little things. Like how a werewolf will help fight against shadows, or how a single action from earlier affects things later. Done right in computer games it's done very well (which is rare because games tend to be lacking enough content). Tabletop wise you have to think on your feet more. If you haven't played Pathfinder: Wrath of the rgithious, I highly recomend it. Enjoy a fun game while picking up some tricks for when you play tabletop. Wonder how a player part running a kingdom together would work in tabletop D&D? Now there's a thought.

I will always remember the infamous Jade Frog Statue from the beginner's premade campaign that we all thought had a big importance but turned out to be just useless. Then my sister added the frog statues in her last campaign we just finished and has an actual purpose for them and despite only finding one of them out of the total there was, it still brought us to a realm with strange and terrifying puzzles where we played as frogs and more humanoid frogs and even having to make jumps onto platforms hovering over a bottomless pit. 2 of our members fell but were brought back to the main temple but both the the bad/rogue and me, the wizard, were able to survive by the tip of my Frog's tongue that I'm surprised no one even tried to use to boost the odds of making the jump, but just the 2 of us had to fight a freaking Froghemoth. The bard/rouge was eaten by this beast multiple times and I was eaten once but struggled to escape multiple times and barely managed to survive. My sister wanted to murder this party so badly around this time but we kept finding ways to survive and we only had one person die towards the very end from risking his life to save our Bard/rogue. Also the adopted child that our fighter cat adopted was killed all of a sudden towards the end. So yeah. That whole campaign was madness.

I feel like as a DM, I would "tweak" the story... like saving a demon who made a contract with a princess who used his powers for her gain... who's like 12. And she kills the party more times than a demon who in the earlier campaign toyed with them.

I like to add homebrew elements to pre-written campaigns. I’ve seen how players who know whats coming can ruin the experience for players that don’t (I was one of them that had no idea what was in store.) So now that I’m DM, I move traps, change monster stats up, switch up npc traits, add new events. While the overarching story might be pretty much the same, it adds a new experience for even those that ran it before :3

The all thing with avoiding trouble by going left remind me of the audio serie on the French tabletop rpg "the dungeon of Naheulbeuk" in which they learn after defeating the boss of the dungeon that they could have gone straight to him without trouble just by going straight ahead instead of left or right and that is was built like this because adventurers never go straight ahead

Would be rather interesting to do a redo type of campaign after a tpk, maybe have the characters cursed so that they cannot truly die so long one of them remains alive, they can still get completely incapacitated in battle, but so long one survived they'd get up somehow, unless their body is too mangled, in that case they'd have to spend some time fixing up their dead comrade, if one is eaten they'd have to kill whatever ate them otherwise they'd remain there forever being dissolved by the stomach acid without ever dying... That is unless everyone else dies, if that happens they go back to the start of the whole campaign as level 1s... Only armed with whatever they had at the time and the knowledge they gained from the future events that might or might not happen

I homebrewed an SMT campaign. I am definitely doing to run it more than once with my main group. They'll probably pick Chaos first time through (Though I have my suspicions that one player will want to go Law). They might go through and get the Fiends ending the first time, which would be impressive because they have to fight 6 Fiends, each of which is 2 levels higher than the party and are designed to kill you if you're not playing optimally because it is very much stressed that the Fiends are like that. They'll probably do it the second time, though. Then probably a third run for them to do whatever crazy shit and see where we end up. But, as an extra caveat, their previous characters will be bosses if the players take a different route, and the nature of these fights will vary depending on their previous route.

I'm currently in a campaign that's only the second time I've ever done a premade module... and it's the second time of the *same* Phandelver module. Different DM, though, half the players are different, and of course totally different characters. Good thing is we didn't make it too far into the first one before scheduling/etc. ended that campaign, so we're already getting to new stuff we haven't played before. Funny thing, though: in both attempts at this campaign, my characters wanted a certain NPC alive for two different reasons (first time because my guy very strongly believed in "punishment should always fit the crime" and the NPC hadn't actually hurt anyone; second time because the NPC's magic and philosophy was very close to my guy's, and I wanted him as a mentor). And in both attempts, the same player *murdered* that NPC immediately for two different reasons. (First time because "good-aligned Paladins murder anyone doing necromancy no questions asked" and second time because "I'm evil-aligned and he caught me trying to steal his shit, so I had to murder him or I wouldn't get his shit".) It's like no matter what characters we play, this NPC is determined to make this player and I resent each other 😂

Wait, people replay written campaigns, and they stick to the same storyline as the first campaign? Having the characters actions/decisions cause the plot to happen sounds way more fun than characters reacting to the plot, let alone following the same trail as before.
