You can tell Megan was a better player in her college days. Completely relatable when she said that she’s not in her best tennis shape. She just needs more time on the court if she wants to get back on that horse. This takes nothing away from Winston’s game. Played super solid as usual. Winston, my advice would be to spend a little more time at the net, especially on approach shots/volleys/overheads. Looks like you have a clear game plan from the baseline, but I think you’d add more to the arsenal with a better net game. -Coach K

I would say I’m a 4.5 as well, at a level similar/tied level as yours I randomly binge watched your videos today and this is my analysis of your game. Obviously just an opinion from my perspective so I know it’s highly possible it doesn’t mean much I think you have a good tennis IQ- you’re good at predicting what the opponent is going to hit. You’re good at hitting on one of the sides, then following it with another shot in the same side/corner after they retrieve it and run to the middle behind them Forehand- best part of your game. Solid, consistent, and has a good amount of pace and spin. Also good variation and mix in slices when the ball is low. I see you’re dictating a lot of points and matches with it. Backhand- average. You hit it back and sometimes slice it back, but I imagine it being easy to pick on and come in on. It has average pace. Serve- decent-ish. You have some kick on it and don’t seem to double fault too often. It’s definitely not a weapon though, I feel like you could hit it with a lot more “umph” to it though. Kind of seems like you’re just throwing the ball in for play Footwork- not great. You’re obviously very fit and in shape. You don’t really prepare or set up too well and it kind of looks like you’re standing there at times. This ties in to your net game Net- not great, but have great potential. You hit great volleys sometimes, but then hit a lot of unforced errors looking flat footed too.

Hi Winston, I've been following you for a while and I love your videos, so first of all congratulations! I noticed one thing in your game that I think you should consider correcting: you tend to go backwards as you hit the ball, instead of carrying the weight forward you go backwards. Maybe you could consider staying farther down the court so you don't have to move back every time you get a deep ball. Happy tennis!
@elchanclascocina
@elchanclascocina Жыл бұрын
Yes he does but I believe he nevertheless generates good pace with his forehand; i think he does it because he runs a lot around his backhand and ends up lacking a step or 2, yet overall compensates much better than... me at least. To me it's his serve he can make a huge difference at, he knows it too.
@maxpowers4436
@maxpowers4436 Жыл бұрын
Going forward in modern tennis is a myth only time is on approach or a short ball that's low. Ever seen a pro play from the side? They spin like a top. Falling backwards happens sometimes because a shot is deep or you don't make it in time so you have to hit the ball side on basically instead of behind the ball. Sometimes he does "fall away" or pull up but that's easily fixable. His main issue and first one should be his serve which would change his game dramatically if he improved it.
@elchanclascocina
@elchanclascocina Жыл бұрын
@@maxpowers4436 Agree with his serve and that him falling away is fixable. On your first point that going forward is a myth, that's not what I've seen live at the stadium matches. For sure, in ATP, probably more than 50% they don't move ahead, overall because they don't have time or they are on the defense or don't need to because they can generate the pace without it. I was able to go to RG this year and the biggest eye opener was how much they moved ahead when they hit and then went back. Probably because it's clay and are usually playing further back. They did this it seemed everytime they could. I've seen video of Nadal giving advice specifically on this to players in his academy.
@maxpowers4436
@maxpowers4436 Жыл бұрын
@@elchanclascocina Im not sure what you have seen but can you show me a video demonstraing this? I too have watched countless matches live and on video and the overwhelming majority of modern high level players do not "carry the weight forward" that is an old pre 90s style of hitting. Players however do transfer weight from the backfoot to the forward foot yes but don't actually "move forward" at all. Moving forward is only in rare instances as I've mentioned such as closing at the net moving up to reach a short ball. Here is a video of Novak that's 5 years old playing on clay watching it 90% of the time he hits the ball where he is and rotates around his own axis like a boxer 10% of the time he is falling back DURING the shot or moving forward DURING the shot not counting approaches and all this we are talking during the shot here. Its a 10 min video and it shows a lot of strokes and clearly looking at hit he isn't carrying anything forward for at least 90% of the time. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iGfYpI2ga6yBla8 In this clip Nadal himself is basically hitting the ball while in the air, falling sideways or falling backwards. kzbin.info/www/bejne/o4CQnGCQr5xpoa8 Maybe telling students this is a good way to get them to actually use their bodyweight but tennis coaching is so all over the shop that's a separate topic. But regardless in reality it dsnt happen hence why I said it was a myth.

@@maxpowers4436 I don't disagree but as a woman player who plays men myself, I have to change my game to win. I cannot out-hit a stronger man if I hit flat balls. But I can consciously make the choice to hit more deeply into the court and with more spin to keep my opponents pushed back and out of their comfort zone.
@maxpowers4436
@maxpowers4436 Жыл бұрын
@@automaticsweetheart2009 Well firstly thats great but that's not really that common though even for pro women hence Megan wouldn't know what to do even if she was match fit. Secondly having to think about how you will hit a shot automatically slows down your acceleration and weakens your shot. Having to genuinely think about every shot and it not being in your muscle memory bank slows your acceleration down. And I don't mean thinking about adding more spin in a warmup or a under 50% ball I mean hitting a rally ball at like 80% max power and genuinely trying to adjust your swing path. Pro men and women don't do that they hit how they hit with natural swing path. Thirdly yea that's a good tactic but men in general already deal with high deep spinning balls and already play behind the baseline. The men's game is generally already more deep with more spin and more behind the baseline. This all ties into my original comment where if all things were equal the men's style of play is just a natural counter match up regardless of power as women are not used to that much spin on the ball and men are.

I'm a bit surprised with the score. I thought Megan would hang a little tougher, but if she hadn't played much recently, then the score makes sense. It seems to me, with exceptions, that there is about a full 1.0 point difference between men's and women's ratings. I would expect the man to win if he is only 0.5 points below the woman's ranking. Like, I said, there are certainly exceptions, but I think it's some combination of the man having better power, spin and court coverage, in general and the woman feeling like she has to press to overcome those factors that accounts for a lot of the difference. Playing style will make some difference, as well. In a rematch, Megan should do a little better, maybe in the 6-3 range. She does seem to have a competitive game... I think perhaps a handicap match would be interesting. Maybe have Megan start with a 15-0 lead on Winston's serving games??

You sure you're not a 5.0?

Everyone seem to agree what Megan said about not playing much tennins as one of the reasons for this performance but no one (including her) wants to admit that a 5.0 girl is a no match to a 4.5 guy. This is just a biology folks. Those who dont know Serena Williams in her prime once unofficially challenged any pro (not top 200 bcz she was at least sane enough) for a contest and one guy Karsten Braasch rated 203 that time accepted it and totally destroyed both the sisters (6-1, 6-2) so its not that Megan is not a great player but it's a gender thing folks. There is a pretty good biological reason why in every sports men and women dont compete against each other. lol

she’s actually a better player than u… but she made too many mistakes… even at full tennis shape she would still lose.. it would be closer.. men and women play at different levels..

UTR (Universal Tennis Rating) disproves your last statement. Men have a higher UTR CEILING than women based on biology but that's not at all the same thing as "playing at different levels." Elite women peak at a lower average UTR than elite men (12-13 for women, 14-16 for men). Put another way, a male and female who have the same UTR are the SAME level.
