Winston, your groundies are solid. If you want to bring your game up to the next level, you should take a couple of lessons to improve your serve. One of the guys I play with decided to learn a kick serve last winter. He took a lesson, got the basics and has turned his serve into a weapon. IMO, if you make your serve stronger, you get a lot of easy games and can focus on breaking serve. Thanks for the great content.

Winston had his chances; especially, in the beginning of the set. Momentum shifted once Claire got used to Winston's game plan. That was the set, Winston failed to improvise once Claire raised her game and was used to Winston's forehands. Winston's continued attempts to dominate with the forehand didn't pay off because he continued to leave the forehand side of the court wide open and his forehands were predictable. Winston defended the forehand side of the court well in the beginning, but couldn't maintain that level of play. Winston needed a stronger backhand and some slice drives to set up the shot a la Steffi Graf. And the 2nd serve didn't help Winston. Winston needs to work on his second serve and maintain a high percentage of first serves; especially, if his strategy is to win with the forehand. And to set up with the heavy topspin forehand is one thing, but Winston really need to work on his groundstrokes; especially, on how he replies on the run. Winston is a baseliner, but there were some set up shots that he made that he should of taken advantage of by coming in to net. So, if Winston were to play a rematch, Winston needs to improve on his 2nd serve, high percentage of 1st serves, a slice drive a la Graf, occasionally coming to net to finish the point, and better groundstroke defense. Or, at the minimum, needs work on his defensive plays, consistency, maintain level of play or stamina, high percentage of 1st serves, and more confidence on his backhand. Winston's level of play was definitely chipped away as Claire got him moving from side to side.

Great vid and many thanks. Love the format and overall production is excellent too. As my son's coach says, opponents can become rattled when you have a backhand that is as strong or stronger than your forehand. When you went in with this as a key strategy Winston, my guess is that you quickly worked out that it probably wasn't working and you had to work hard to fill the strategy vacuum. Claire was effectively moving you all over the court with commanding power and very few errors, which I'm guessing kept you too preoccupied to come up with a different approach. Excellent game and keep it up. Cheers from Sydney - Dave

Claire is a very aggressive player. Her ball placement is very precise and dangerous making Winston really hard to respond. Claire’s playing style is also quite dominant and aggressive. She’s very active on the court creating tough shots and her pace is really fast. But again this is only 1 set, with the style that she plays, she is going to wear herself out faster compared to other players. If Winston can somehow force Claire to move around the court more often by creating wide angle shots and to gradually drain her, not sure if she will have enough stamina and energy to maintain such an aggressive playing style throughout the entire match. If this game extends to the second or third set or even more, the result could be very different.

People who get low and hit aggressively like Claire (for example Emma Raducanu) actually get into better shape than people who are preoccupied with energy conservation. I think getting way down and using legs and putting a lot into every shot is closer to what the human body evolved to do, and there can be big payoffs in fitness. Looks to me like Claire's conditioning is great. I'd question whether she is likely to go away, even deep in a three-setter, and think that the "energy conservation" strategy of hitting the tennis ball results in both less effective shots and less conditioning!
@perroguerrero95682 жыл бұрын
@@johnhhh3591 You can't really tell everything in one set. We will just have wait for them to play an actual match 2 out of 3 sets to really see their skillset, and fitness. I believe Winston will have the chance to finish Claire off if he is able to counter her.

@sh0ck8152 жыл бұрын
Claire's return game was really putting Winston feeling the pressure from jump. She was able to aggressively take the advantage out of the server by hitting returns deep and into the opposite corners, which I think also forced a few doubles on Winston's end as well. I think Winston could've mixed in a few different service balls (slice/flat serves) to kind of throw her off, but I think he was focused on playing high percentage. On the flip side, I think he could've been slightly more aggressive in the placement of his returns, because it seems like they either landed slightly short or too towards the middle of the court, allowing Claire to really load up and be aggressive right off the service. I thought he had a good read on the ball, but really probably could've focused on moving her halfway through the set rather than focusing on spinning to her backhand side. Claire played lights out in the second half though, so maybe the outcome would've been the same lol. Fun to watch though!

Claire moves very well and maintains a forward balance when executing her strokes, which works well for her aggressive gamestyle. Winston, you, on the other hand, tend to lean backwards when hitting your shot. That negates some of the power you put into your groundstrokes. You also look like you put time in the gym to stay bulked up. If tennis is your priority, would suggest losing that bulk to increase your speed (by perhaps doing more plyometrics than weightlifting). I noticed on some shots when you were pulled wide, you were slow to move back to the middle of the baseline, given Claire the open court end the point. In short, improve your court coverage by positioning yourself better and maybe lose some bulk.

Great players, especially Claire. But, some confuses good foot work with anxiety. There is no need to rush every ball. Some balls require slice while others require power… she could win more if she starts with strategy and later with power, not the way around. The opponents perceive anxiety fast, and all they do is keep pushing the ball to force mistakes.

Winston's game is actually pretty decent, particularly from the baseline. Solid fundamentals from the ground and movement. That serve needs a lot more pace. He's not Fabrice Santoro and 5'5". Great match. I noticed you targeted her backhand in the first games, even though that was pretty rock solid, whilst you drew most errors from her forehand (UEs). Then it seems to me you lost a little depth in your groundstrokes, keeping the pace, but going lower over the net (and landing around the service line). To me, that looked like it was right in her wheelhouse, being able to step in and using pace against but stealing time. She struggled more with the lower pace, higher trajectory balls to her FH (as she was always trying to be very aggressive), than these shorter ones, at least it seemed to me. But these things are never easy to catch in the heat of the moment. Very entertaining, thanks for posting.

Serve's no good? From a technical standpoint (for what it's worth from a random dude in the youtube comments section) your serve is your best shot. Actually, technically, you're pretty good all-round, you seem just to be struggling to find a contact point that does justice to your excellent technique. This is quite the compliment, as most novices are reasonably proficient at finding a contact point that matches their rough technique, whereas you've mostly conquered the hard part (technique), you just haven't yet found where on top to place the cherry (contact point). The point is, you could get much better-and surprisingly quickly at that-if you're ever able to identify this as being the principal crease requiring smoothing. All the best.

Winston needs to add variations to his game. Until 2-0 Claire took a bit of time to read his game, and then once she understood, it was an easy road for her. Winston doesn’t modify his game plan, sticks to the same style of tennis. He also needs to play deeper shots onto the baseline, something that Claire wasn’t comfortable. It’s great that Winston is playing with some many different players. With that, he needs to adapt his game as well. Just playing the same kinda shots with everyone won’t work. i think he has the right idea(winston) to aim to keep a high percentage of his first serves. hes not as comfortable with his second serve and his double faults. keep a strong kick is better then trying to bomb low precentage flat serves with a few slices to keep opponents honest. plus flat serves is just purely speed u can only bomb so fast (but variety is more important). if u can place it well a kick serve works so effectively. winstons a high percentage player. plus a low slice out wide or jamming into them with winstons high topsin would put many players off balance

@@Tommie22x For me, this is exactly the reason why he SHOULD be hitting big first serves. If he's going to hit doubles, then he may as well go for the big payback. The problem with second serves is, you rarely win the point directly from the serve.
