Kent implies that a lot of game players work in artistic fields, due to similarities. That's one explanation. Backgammon is distinctly aesthetic, and even chess can be played decently by just making moves that look pretty. Another explanation is that highly intelligent people have an analytical itch, and if you work in STEM it's already being scratched. Knowledge workers might not want to do yet more thinking in their down time. But for those of us without a mentally demanding day job, games can fill that need to use our brain.

@@eonny Sometimes backgammon requires playing very ugly moves. Hideaki Ueda is notoriously good at this.
