I get it! Especially the first time through the slash chords. It really is how you look at it. Thanks

i tend to do the exact same thing! ive recently been playing over modal style backing tracks to get a feel for it. the good thing is all modes are structured around all the penatonic positions you just have to learn to incorporate the 2 extra notes that make up each mode. and for some extra pizazz sprinkle the flat 5 in there in a tasteful manner!

Right on man. Yeah it's all in the alt notes for sure!

Very helpful! There needs to be more content like this bc I find this where most intermediate players struggle. Do you, even through advanced get tired of your playing style and seek outside for new approaches?

I'm sure Shawn will see you and answer soon, or maybe we can do a video about this. Make sure to subscribe because we try to focus on tutorial content with Shawn on our channel :)

Within the past couple of years I have been thinking about switching scales to the chord being played and have had good results with this. It is mentally more challenging but sounds better generally. I started do this after watching a video where Matt Schofield talks about doing that and thought I would give it try it. Not to take anything away from you perspective. I appreciate your views and input.

There was a nice Lifeson moment happening here, I would have latched on to that and the rest would have been vanilla scale based stuff. My vocabulary is actually rather limited, so this helped a bunch.

Great lesson! Just tried to play over the same changes and would probably think A Mixolydian over the A/G chord and C Mixolydian over the C/Bb chord but essentially we would arrive at the same place.

It’s strange to hear you say that you play in the penta mainly bc it never sounds that way. You have a very unique style that is hard to get your ear/head around. Most don’t think this way buts very cool.

This is a very cool way to get some Lydian sounds. What I found awesome is the way you used D major pentatonic over that G 6/9. I'm definitely going to steal the crap out of that! Another thing that impresses me about your playing is that you don't play scales in a straight up/down manner, yet your sequences sound so organic and natural. It's like you're playing a sequence, but it doesn't sound like a strict robotic practice exercise. I'd love to see a video of how you approach playing scales. How do you approach making scales sound more interesting?

As usual, you nailed it Shawn. I purchased your SoundSlice (it drasticly upgraded my playing) and wondered what is your approach (I want to do this because I don't want a simple and bad copy of Shawn Tubbs, the original is too unique). Between my thought I would like to know your approach of arppegios. Your licks are often "Arppegio built". One more thing is your incredible sense of rhythmic placement. How do you do that???? thank you for anything Shawn. You don't know how I wait for each of your videos. N.B: because of you I purchased the Seventy 4 LPD (-:

Thanks so much!! I lifted the majority of my phrasing and rhythmic placement from Robben Ford, Mike Landau, and Django Reinhardt.

I’m coming up on 40 years of playing guitar and played through changes is the weakest part of my playing. I play my best when I don’t have to think, just wish I didn’t have to think when I’m playing through changes!

Scientists call that the Danny Elfman mode. Vaguely forbidden in some southern states and referred to as “Lydian” by the cork sniffers at the North Texas School of Student Debt.

very valuable help for some of the newer players.. it's good insight that I could have used back in the days when I was studying my Berklee workbooks.. to just get out of that whole modal way of thinking for a while.. and break it down to simple pentatonic licks.. which reminds me of a very old Paul Gilbert video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mX2clYiKqtimoJo
