The thing about Bale is you forget he is acting. Whereas DiCaprio usually looks like he acting. Bale embodies the characters he portrays on the screen. Method actors tend to parrot and mimic the imagined actions of the character. Bale just becomes. Thus winging it is authentic.

Not sure how widely this fact is known, but when Bale was losing weight for The Machinist he was going by a calculation by the screenwriter. Thing is the screenwriter of that movie was 6-8 inches shorter and considerably leaner looking than Bale. So when the writer did up a calculation of how underweight the character should be he did it with himself in mind and not a larger actor. Bale saw the weight, and instead of asking questions about it, just went out and got down to that weight, which for him bordered on deadly due to the emaciation. But that is how dedicated he is to a role.

Fun Fact: not only was Bale's portrayal of Patrick Bateman inspired by by Tom Cruise, Cruise also appears in the novel American Psycho. He lives in the same building as Bateman (albiet on a more expensive floor), and they have a brief encounter in the elevator. Bateman tells him he likes his new movie "Bartender", to which Cruise corrects him "Cocktail, not Bartender", before pointing out Bateman's nose was bleeding.

About the sweating: definitely tricky, but acting can have a weird cause-and-effect thing with your body. One of the trippiest moments I ever had, I was reading an argument scene to someone (not even moving around, just voicing it,) and the mood ring I was wearing shifted to “angry” colors because my body temperature was actually spiking voicing that scene. I proceeded to ruin the moment by bursting out laughing the second I noticed this.
