Michael Caine raises a great point about the timing of how the events of that incident became public.
@nikkinewbie60142 жыл бұрын
It’s extremely shady how the whole thing went down. The whole thing happened while he was shooting Terrminator Salvation in July in New Mexico while at the same time promoting The Dark Knight all over the globe flying back and forth. Under tremendous pressure. His costars in the scene described how he was sleep deprived, hungry etc. and so probably burning the candle at both ends and then the director of photography (emphasis on Director ) does something that is just really against the norm on a set. Even Ron Howard an accomplished Director and the female lead’s (Bryce Dallas Howard) Father said it was a no no for anyone to be moving after action is called. But when this guy who should know better is told it caused a problem for the lead actor to be moving in his sight line, the guy does it again and The Main Director McG doesn’t regulate his set or do anything to resolve the conflict. Not even after Bale says do you want to say anything about this does McG weigh in but in fact says he didn’t see it. WTF! So Bale regulates the situation and he wasn’t nice about it because he’s at his limit. Everyone has a limit. It’s a shame because McG had to come to Bale three times to take the role begging for him to take a chance on him as a director because hadn’t somebody given Bale a chance to prove himself etc. So Bale did and the guy says “I didn’t see it”. And on top of that the tape gets leaked. Such a betrayal for work product to be leaked. Why was that audio saved when there was no usable portion for the movie? Meanwhile we all know it’s commonplace for entire scenes that are actually shot not to make it off the cutting room floor so again why was that audio saved? It was given to the film’s insurer in case Bale tried to walk off the picture because much of what was represented and planned when he agreed to take the role fell through. All that said Bale apologized to the guy the same day it happened and it was all good. Then right before the film is released the tape is leaked. Shady af. I’m glad Caine also went on to say he’s done worse but the difference is that nobody taped it. It’s unfortunate when you get taped being human for four minutes out of your life and it then defines you as far as some are concerned - even if it’s a one off and the behavior is never repeated. Some will say there’s no excuse for how Bale acted and what he said. My answer is that it happened. Bale apologized the day it happened and then again after the tape was leaked. Period. It shouldn’t be that easy to condemn someone for four minutes of screaming.
@LiamOfOzz2 жыл бұрын
@@nikkinewbie6014 Thank you very much for clearing that up! It was weird listening to the tape without context.
@nikkinewbie60142 жыл бұрын
@@LiamOfOzz You’re very welcome. My best friend was working at the Air Force base when that movie was shot. She wasn’t born in that part of the country and she was always saying how hot it was in July in NM. Must have been near unbearable. Connecting another dot “the rant” happened within a week or two of the incident with Bale’s mother and sister the day of the London premier of TDK. It was clearly a very pressure filled time in Bale’s life. There wasn’t any physical assault with his Mother and sister only more yelling but they called the police on him. The sister said they did it because it all happened in front of Bale’s nieces. “Verbal assault” is actually a chargeable offense in London 🙄. It was a family matter and should have stayed that way but it was all handled in a very ugly way. Hurtful for your own mother to sic the police on you knowing you are famous and it will have such significant repercussions. Very spiteful. Anyway that all happened about the same time and then as Caine says the tape was leaked months later before the picture opened. It’s a shame that it was only audio if it had to be leaked. So much is lost when you can’t see someone’s body language or facial expression or hand gestures. No way to know but I’ll bet the Director of photography’s body language and general physical reaction was probably pretty dismissive. Because you can hear Bale escalate as the minutes tick by instead of calming down. You can hear that people are smiling / chuckling as they are asking him to calm down trying to mollify him. That would only piss me off more if no one was actually addressing the issue that I have a problem with. What also isn’t talked about is how much Bale was vested in the film, spending hours and hours collaborating and trying to develope the characters with McG. It wasn’t just another job to him. So he was on a whole other level of involvement. That’s why he threatened to walk at first if the guy wasn’t fired. But that context isn’t given. Yeah there’s always context. 😂 The Nolans were to have been involved with writing the script and the story initially and I think the approach was that they saw what the Nolan Bale team did for the Batman franchise and they were hoping for the same for Terminator. It really should have been much better than it was but the writers strike and other things just killed the original plans and Bale got stuck with what was left trying to salvage it. I’ll bet he wishes he had said no a fourth time when McG came to him. But it’s all in the past now. I think Bale is still guarded in interviews to this day thinking at some point he will be ambushed like RDJ and others have been by asshole interviewers. But it was always so amazing to me how personally offended people got over an argument at a workplace between two grown men. And the Director of Photography is probably like third or fourth from the top of the totem pole in n a set. Definitely not an underling for those that want to say it was such a power play. It really wasn’t. It’s just way too easy for people to get holier than thou these days… Anyway cheers!

@nikkinewbie60142 жыл бұрын
@@neilburns8869 There was no hitting /physical violence. He wasn’t back home visiting family. This happened the night that TDK premiered in London. He was there for that and his mother, sister and her three daughters came to the hotel he and his wife were staying in. At some point an argument broke out and some say his mother insulted his wife and/or they were there asking for money for some “business opportunity” or both. It’s well known that Bale’s early success acting at 13 was not something he 100 percent wanted to continue but he couldn’t stop cuz his family was relying on him for the income and that probably never stopped unless / until Bale got to a point where he put a stop to it - perhaps due to estrangement. What most don’t realize is that “Verbal assault” / yelling at someone is actually a chargeable offense in London. Can u imagine if it was in the US? After the argument the mother and sister left the hotel and called the police on their son /brother to have him charged... their very famous actor son / brother that was there to premiere arguably the biggest movie released that year. The police did not move forward with the charges after a short investigation but I can’t think of anything more spiteful for “family” to have done. The fact that his mother didn’t elect to instead handle their differences in house after everyone cooled off behind closed doors screams volumes. What a betrayal! If that was the dynamic of their relationship, then no wonder Bale chose to live with his Dad when his parents divorced. There are interviews of the sister where she clarifies that it was a verbal altercation and she justifies her and her mother calling the police because it all took place in front of her young daughters. She claimed that If it had just been her and her mom they wouldn’t have. 🙄. Right. In her interviews, the mother was pointing to the Terminator set rant and saying “now maybe people will see why we called the police.” As in we were justified to do it because that’s the way he was talking to us. Point being again it was verbal not physical. By the way the rant and the London premier of TDK took place within a couple of weeks of each other in July. The rant was just leaked several months later. Bale was shooting Terminator Salvation and doing promotion and premiers for TDK all over the world at the same time flying back and forth. And he had the added strain of having to field all the questions about Ledger’s passing a few months prior in the promotional interviews while also dealing with the loss because they had become friends. He was very protective of Ledger when there was any suggestion that Ledger lost himself or got suicidal etc. So it was probably a very pressure filled time in his life. Clearly the relationship between him and his mother and sister was already estranged because real family doesn’t call police on you when voices get raised. I would never call the police on my own son for yelling. I…just…wouldn’t. Again, that kind of betrayal doesn’t come out of nowhere. There’s every indication of a bad family dynamic involved that no one ever acknowledges when they talk about this incident. It’s a shame that even now people still mistakenly think Bale physically assaulted his mother and sister - even when they themselves have said it was verbal only. Even the news stories that covered it when it happened state verbal but that always seems to get lost. But the mother and sister sure did manage to finagle some money for interviews and their fifteen minutes of fame out of it🤔.

You do not get charged for verbal assault in London that is bs
@nikkinewbie60142 жыл бұрын
@@seanbradley3675 A simple google search for “is verbal abuse a chargeable offense in London” would have prevented you from basically calling me a liar. But here you go: Verbal abuse is covered by UK Public General Acts 1986 Part 1 Section 4, 4A, 5 depending on the circumstances but does not include physical harm. So no - it’s NOT bs. Secondly, every article written about the incident by a journalist or publication will state that he was charged with VERBAL ABUSE because stating anything else would have been libel and no one wanted to be sued. What he was charged with would be a matter of record and easily winnable in court so people were careful to get it right. That should clear things up for you. If not, then it’s not something worthy for me to spend more time on. But I figured I’d give you the benefit of the doubt that once presented with factual evidence, you would dial YOUR bs back.

And the thing is he is working so consistently. Even if a movie he is in misfires it is rarely said he completely tanks his performance in it. He just brings it every time. There are other actors who are really good but I do consider the volume of their body of work. Not to take anything away from Daniel Day Lewis for instance but when’s the last time he made a movie? It’s great to hang your rep on one or two projects but where’s the consistency of work? And where is the range? Bale stands out among his peers for many reasons but that’s just two of them he has over many of them. Bale has been working consistently for decades now, has range of roles even within the same movie 😂, and truly does bring something to each role that just solidifies his effort to make the audience believe that for those two hours or so you are watching him, Christian Bale is nowhere to be found but rather he IS the character. It’s random but if there’s a record for an actor having the most portrayals of real life people in their careers, he probably holds it. I think it’s a testament to the level of his artistry that he has been the choice to portray so many real people. I count six so far and three of them were still alive when he did their movies.

Christian Bale is the best Bruce Wayne/Batman on screen. Playing the different personas where he channels the anger and pain into Batman to being the self indulgent, Playboy philanthropist side of Bruce Wayne for the public to see so he’s not suspected of being Batman and then the real Bruce Wayne where only those close to him get to see, like Alfred, Fox, Rachel and in the end Selina and Blake. Fantastic actor all the way around and is great in everything he does, even if he’s been in some films that aren’t that great, but that one role of Bruce Wayne/Batman was able to show his range as an actor in three films. Of course Christopher Nolan and the other writers deserve credit for giving him great material to work with, but he truly took that role and embodied the character perfectly.

You are 100% on the money with everything you said. He did something with the role that no one else playing live action has ever done with it. @@feryfrost8572 I like the real Bruce too but it’s so funny and brilliant the way Bale portrays the eccentric billionaire. He really does come across as someone that is totally out of touch with what’s going on in Gotham and of course that’s the whole point. One of my favorite scenes is when Bruce totals his Lamborghini to protect the accountant who tried to blackmail him. Gordon says it was brave of him and Bruce says something like he was trying to catch the traffic light 😂😂😂. Then he takes it one step further and asks Gordon “do you think I should go to the hospital?” Pretending to be oblivious that the hospitals are all being evacuated due to the Joker’s threat. Then he gives the accountant guy that slight nod of the head to let him know he knows that the guy knows who he is but he still saved him when it would have solved his problem to just let him be killed. Just a really fun scene but meaningful too because it really shows Bruce’s character that he did the right thing even in the face of taking a high personal risk that his secret could be outed since the guy is still alive. Also this scene runs parallel to the idea that Bruce thinks nothing of totaling his Lambo or spending millions of dollars in his Crusade to save Gotham. This is much like the Joker burning “his half” 😂😂 of all the mob’s money. Remember that the accountant even described to Fox how he discovered Applied Sciences Division of Wayne Ent was “burning through cash” on a secret project (what are u building for him now? A rocket ship?). That description literally verbally parallels the Joker burning through HIS cash too. This keeps with the canon concept that Batman and the Joker are in some ways “two sides of the same coin”. Just epic attention to detail with the storytelling. Epic.

His sense of humor and ability to deliver and be funny is probably his least known or acknowledged skill set. I've watched interviews of his and for the past several years now he's been very lighthearted, quick witted and funny. I mean he's not "I'm a comic on stage and it's showtime" funny. It's much more subtle and clever than obvious. On screen, he hasn't been given much of a chance to be funny but has taken advantage of those opportunities when he had them. Several lines in the Batman Trilogy, and his performance in certain scenes in The Fighter come to mind. Even American Psycho gave me a peak at his humor - especially since some of the scenes I'm thinking about were improvised by him and got retained in the movie. His performance in a scene as Ken in a car with his wife, Molly (she's driving) in F vs F was funny to me. I haven't seen Amsterdam, but it looks like he's doing some physical comedy and is somewhat lighthearted in that one. I've heard the movie isn't good, but there are the "normal" carve outs for Bale's good performance in the reviews. So 100% agree with you.

I heard Bale in an interview will after his freak out. After the movie came and went he was on a nationally syndicated comedy morning radio show and they asked him about it. Bale did NOT dismiss it. He went in for about 90 seconds about how out of line he himself was. “I’m an actor and supposed to be able to turn it on and off. I make the big money and have zero right to harass any of the behind the scenes people who work tirelessly…” It did not sound rehearsed, the host interrupted him several times to ask him about various comments. What I wrote, he did not exactly say. I surmised the intent. I’ve heard actors BS answers before. I believed him. He never said ‘sorry’. He said things like ‘inexcusable’ and ‘horribly unprofessional’.

Christian Bale is amazing. American Psycho - the scene when he sweats because he feels his business card is less than what it should be. The Machinist- not just the body transformation - but immersing himself into the trauma and guilt that character felt and allowing it to, for lack of a better pun, eat himself alive. Then there's The Prestige. Equilibrium. Vice. American Hustle. ✅️✅️✅️✅️

Christian bale really made Bruce Wayne and Batman come alive. I’m not saying his Batman performance is the only one that matters cause that’s def not true, but I do think it’s true that he is the best one. He just hits the balance right with characters and really devotes his body and mind to them. I dream of a future where he is one of the actors who grows old and somewhat replaces the roles of people like Morgan freeman, Michael Caine, Christopher lee, etc. I wanna see him acting until he literally can’t do it anymore. His performances are just so real
