I remember going out to Playland Park off Broadway it was near the Butter Krust Bread Factory where were taken as elementary school students in the mid 70's to early 80's and l remember looking across the street to the Playland Park and thinking of how much fun we had there and couldn't wait to go back! It was a fun day at the Bread factory where we got a slice of buttered bread a ruler, pencil, and we got a lunch from Church's Fried Chicken ,a 2 pc.w/ fries and a drink and it was "GOOOOOD!" PLAYLAND PARK , BUTTER KRUST, THE ZOO, THE WITTE MUSEUM, KIDDIE PARK WHICH IS ALSO CLOSED DOWN AND DESTROYED FOR BIGGER AND BETTER THINGS I GUESS....l will always have the memories though!!

Thanks for sharing. This brought back some old, faded memories, especially from the 60s. I grew up just down the road from Playland Park. Broadway and Austin Hwy were pretty awesome with Playland Park, Kiddie Park, Shakey's Pizza, TeePee Steakhouse with the teepee and horse ties up next to it, and the Alamo Drive-In Theater.

I’m 70 now and remember this place very well. When I was 15 years, old, my mom and dad would drop me and my brothers and cousins off at this amusement park and boy did we have fun. I rode the rocket roller coaster, one time, and it scared the crap out of me. Lol I remember the first thing that I would ride going through those gates would be the Ferris wheel. Boy, were those the Daze folks.

My buddies and I worked there as teens. Before the park officially opened every Spring we would literally crawl on our stomachs with steel wool in a Kerosene filled pail to scrub the rust off the tracks. Nope, we weren't harnessed and this was pre-OSHA 1971. I started out working on the kiddie rides and worked up to managing the Archery concession where I made our own arrows and bow strings from purchased parts. Good happy memories!!!

I remember getting on some of those rides when your height wasn't a requirement 😂 My parents took my sister and I there back in the 70's and I do recall the changes made for the roller coaster. My step mom worked at the miniature golf area and my step brother and I roamed the park. It never got old. Not even those long crooked neck bottles that you could win tossing rings. Or the phsycodelic posters 😂❤️ those were the days. What amazing memories!

I always wanted to go to Playland Park. I desperately wanted to go...I begged to go, pleaded. My parents refused to take me and never eco,aided why. Fast-forward 51 years later. Sometimes, I get this horrendous feeling of being lost, anxious....terribly sad and disappointed. Like something Vital is missing. Then, I remember-I still suffer from “NeverAttendedPlaylandParkamonia”. My parents tried to make it up to me by taking me to Kiddie Park a few times. Yawn. And not only was it boring, it was too late. The damage had been done. I now wander aimlessly through the Hill Country, mumbling, “ You must be this tall to ride this ride”. Hopeless.

We went there in grade school -- while we were there a major thundershower rolled in and we got drenched as we ran to the school bus. Everything inside the bus was wet and we just sat on those seats in our wet clothes. Three of the girls were crying. One guy threw up. My teacher told us, "Please, everyone calm down. We'll be okay. We just have to sit here until our bus driver can be found." As it turned out our parish priest had to drive us back to school and he was singing Irish folk songs and laughing. What a day. My mother wrote a nasty note to my teacher.

I remember that, and Gillespie Ford (now a self storage) was across Cunningham... Update.... ACCD built an admin building on the site, the entrance area to the old park is now a parking lot... there was a problem during construction on the site, involving the old madre acequia that runs across the back of the property and seeping groundwater....1 of the pictures has the old KFC that was at Cunningham & Broadway.... the building is still there, but it’s been a Mexican restaurant for years... can’t miss it..

If anyone wants to see where the Playland Rocket roller coaster is now, just look at videos of the Phoenix roller coaster at Knoebel's Amusement Resort in Elysburg, PA. Knoebels is one of the greatest amusement parks in the world and the Rocket (now called Phoenix) is a top-ranked wooden roller coaster. Knoebels buying & moving the ride in the mid 80s was an engineering marvel. Better yet, go to Knoebels yourself for a vacation! It's well worth it & more fun than ANY large theme park!

That first portion of this video really did bring back some good memories. I remember I would drive my family nuts unless we went there. I remember very well the kid rides and the *big shoe* you'd have to purchase tickets from. I left San Antonio in 78 and just recently returned in 07. Yes, it was a great disappointment to see the park had closed down and has turned to nothing more than a weed trap. But, thanks for the posting of this video, it was great to see the old photos of rides.

When my parents took me to Kiddie Park, we would always drive by Playland down the street. For some reason my parent s never took me. When I was old enough I wanted to ride The Rocket. It looked beautiful at night lighted up. I was 10 when the park closed and I never was taken to the park. Today, Knoebels Amusement park in Pennslyvania bought and re-built The Rocket and named it The Phoenix. The Little Miss Muffet statue at 1:27 still exists at the Fredricksburg Rd indoor flea market.

@aaronroffman39874 жыл бұрын
It's just changes in the standards of the amusement industry, combined with rising operating costs. Playland didn't have the money or space to compete with amusement giants like Six Flags and Seaworld. Once there's more value to the land a park sits on than you can make from operations, it's time to sell. The bittersweet ending is that some of the kiddie rides were moved elsewhere, and of course the Rocket was resurrected at Phoenix at Knoebels.
@efrem114 жыл бұрын
A better soundtrack for the decayed Playland would be the opening theme from the Omega Man. Went here a few times in the late 70s and it was cool to ride the Rocket. So sad that it has been gone for so long now.

Why? Because the owner was too stubborn & selfish to relinquish any control of "HIS" amusement park! He held onto Playland with a tight fist and when a park in PA. offered him a million dollars for the Rocket roller coaster they had to practically wrestle it from him! Fortunately KNoebels did buy and move the Rocket piece by piece, which now runs in their wonderful park in PA & is one of the world's best wooden roller coasters. The owner ran the park into the ground, refused to improve/expand.
