PLAYMOBIL MOVIE REVIEW - Double Toasted Reviews - Today on the Double Toasted movie review channel, we discuss on our podcast how the Playmobil toys may be looked upon as being inferior to the Lego toys, and we discuss how this may have crossed over into the movie as the film becomes one of the worst reviewed so far this year, breaking records in poor box office, and much more! Was a portion of this film bad because of it's wanting to be like the Lego Movie? Should Playmobil stick to making Ghostbusters and Star Wars playmobil toys? Let us know in the comment section below!
Head on over to Doubletoasted.com for funny movie reviews and movie trailer reactions to official trailers of 2019 livestreamed for your viewing pleasure all throughout the week!

Just imagine all the confused children and irritated parents who saw this movie because Frozen 2 was sold out. Martin's scream of anguish when Korey explained this movie's use of that tired trope of transition from live action to animation says it all.

I actually liked the movie. Even though I’m 14, I did see a few things about this movie that were positive. The first thing I noticed was that they actually killed off Marla and Charlie’s parents. Even though they didn’t show it, that’s incredibly dark for a kids movie. If it was made for little kids too they wouldn’t reference any source involving death. The second thing is the animation, I loved the graphics on the lights and all the characters, and finally, the character development for Marla. She wanted to travel the world, but her parents’ death crushed that. Later, she realized that she can still believe herself if she doesn’t let obstacles get in her way. Now to me, that’s a good story if they could’ve done more with those topics. But honestly, this movie was supposed to be entertaining for kids who are too young to see more mature content. So I wish the adults weren’t so hard on it. But that’s just me.

PLAYMOBIL: THE MOVIE is about a young woman named Marla Brenner. She has just finished high school and wants to travel around the world, but her parents die in an accident. She becomes the legal guardian of her brother Charlie. 4 years pass and they're still living in the same house. I don't just mean that it's the same location; I mean that nothing inside reflects the passage of time. Everything is clean and tidy, and it seems like their financial status hasn't been affected. Does Marla work? Did they inherit enough money from their parents' will? Are they getting some kind of help from the government? I know these seem like minor details, but they needed to be clarified, because Charlie complains about Marla not being fun anymore with a "Our life sucks now" tone. We don't know what exactly is causing this and whether or not Marla is justified. You're probably waiting for me to compare this to THE LEGO MOVIE. Honestly, just because the toyline is a copy, it doesn't mean a film adaptation will automatically be a copy too. There certainly are similarities, but I feel that other films (like THE EMOJI MOVIE) have been bigger rip-offs. Well, what made that movie so great is that it tried to make statements about legos and people who play with them. It didn't feel like its main purpose was to be a commercial. By not giving us enough information about the Brenners' situation, we can't know for sure what they're doing wrong and/or what they need. Therefore, we can't know for sure what lesson we're supposed to learn. You must forget your responsibilities and have fun? You shouldn't let bad events affect your personality? Also, Marla & Charlie end up in a Playmobil store full of miniatures. I think them holding a sign that says "Buy this" would be more subtle. They have the kind of fight that usually happens right before the climax (even though we aren't even 15 minutes into the movie), and then they're magically dragged into the Playmobil world. Marla doesn't become a cool toy. I know that was decided so there could be a contrast between her and the spies, the scientists, etc. However, Charlie retains his personality in his viking body, so he still feels like a fish out of the water. The same thing could've been done for Marla. I thought it was a nice touch to show Marla struggling to move in her new body. However, it feels unnecessary in retrospective. Charlie doesn't struggle and Marla grows accustomed very fast. Not to mention that the limberness of all the toys is inconsistent. In some scenes, they're stiff as plastic; it others, they have the flexibility of a human body. Marla befriends a toy named Del. So now we have 2 toys modeled after an everyday person (even though he doesn't come from the real world, so he doesn't fit in this new world) that we have to follow around. It's just not very interesting. Each group of people or creatures have their own land, but there doesn't seem to be that much distance. How can they live so close to one another? Wouldn't the dinosaurs go outside of their zone and try to eat others? Wouldn't the Roman soldiers, cowboys, pirates, etc. notice that the people from other lands seem like a more advanced society? Wouldn't that affect how they live? Overall, the movie isn't very funny, but there are 1 or 2 cleverly subversive moments. I got the feeling that Anya Taylor-Joy was directed differently in live-action vs in animation. In fact, the way her character was written in both kinds of scenes also make her come off as 2 separate people. Regardless, she still manages to do a good job, and so does Daniel Radcliffe. 4/10

Awesometacular review/rant on Playmobil: The Movie, guys! As for my personal quick thoughts, thank goodness I didn’t give enough of a shit to check this movie out for myself. It just didn’t look like my personal cup of tea at all, I don’t really have as much of a personal emotional attachment to the Playmobil brand as I do LEGO, both the trailers and Daniel Radcliffe’s stunt casting as a James Bond-type agent never really got me intrigued to begin with and honestly there seems to be no rhyme or reason whatsoever for this movie to exist other than to try and capitalise on what The LEGO Movie did so brilliantly and steal our money!

To be fair, as much as this film wishes it was The Lego Movie, it only has two things in common with that film: Sentient toys and different worlds. Other than that, the film has much more in common with The Pagemaster. But yeah, even though I honestly didn't hate this film (I can see this being a guilty pleasure just for how insane and unpredictable it is at times), I'm glad I didn't pay to see it. I'm not gonna reveal how I saw it, but it wasn't in the theater.

Corey, you and I were probably the only idiots that went and saw this for our fans. My theater was empty, so I knew I was screwed. Martin mentioned The Fanatic, and as bad as that film is...I found entertainment value in it. (Mostly Travolta not taking the Tropic Thunder meme seriously.) That movie you can't look away from for the same reasons that people slow down to see a car wreck. Playmobil however is straight up lazy. It can't do a musical number right. It's lead actress can't sing. The plot is nonsense, and unlike Lego movie, it has no heart, and thinks it's clever by taking the audiences through the wonders of dollar store generic land. I gave this a 1 out of 5 cheese curds for my channel. It's a waste of time for literally anyone involved. Glad to know I didn't suffer alone. Great review man!

Playmobil was popular in the UK when I was growing up but not as popular as Lego.

Yeah! This just goes to show if you can make a movie about Playmobil?! Why not make a movie about DTMerch.com!! I never played with Playmobil! I was a Hot Wheels girl growing up! The ONLY time I heard of Playmobil was when I saw a trailer for the dumb DVD Playmobil movie “the secret of Pirate Island” which I saw as a young kid, and I never gave a f$&k about it!

I feel like playmobil is more of a thing in Europe. They had them at after school clubs in my school in the UK

This sounds like two movies stapled together. Like they had two entirely different movies, that were each half finished, and then they tried to Frankenstein them into one movie.

The average movie ticket price is around 9 bucks. Few cents off give or take. The US box office for this was $656,530 for it's opening weekend. That's loosely estimated at about 72,900 people... for 2,337 theaters. I had no point to this. I'm just really high and enjoying the shitshow.

"I saw all the works that were done under the sun,And look! everything was futile, a chasing after the wind."(Ecclesiastes 1:14) This bible principle is the only thing that I have to say about this matter.

I didn’t know this movie existed. They were bootleg legos. I had a shitload of playmobil toys. They actually had some cool figures and little houses and shit. Legos were definitely more fun but the figures for playmobil were decent. This movie is most definitely a bootleg LEGO ripoff

Me with Legos: We followed the instructions, then we built amazing structures with them and incorporated our own characters going on amazing adventures Me with Playmobil: The only thing I remember is our cousins brought them so we can play together

Maybe Playmobil was something bigger in Germany. When I was a kid a lot of my friends had playmobil and we loved it.

I’m not going to defend the film because I haven’t seen it but I do want to say that you may have been too harsh on PlayMobil (the toys) because you keep envisioning them to be a 1 to 1 competitor to Legos. They are not and were never meant to be a Lego type toy. They are just small action figures. PlayMobil are actually cool toys and are in a similar category to other action figures and play sets. They are almost an in between toy for kids who were transitioning from Fisher Price toys but not ready for the bigger toys that may have been more mature in nature. I actually enjoy PlayMobil toys and my kids enjoy them too. You use your imagination to act out the lives of the figures, while they move around in their vehicles or play sets. From realistic sets like schools and space shuttles to imaginary sets like pirates and Ghostbusters, your imagination allowed you to make up your own storyline with them like other toys. Legos are about building worlds from random blocks (which is fine in and of itself) while PlayMobil are you taking premade sets and imagining the day in the life of those characters.
