This game was a reminder of an excellent core part of the 40k Tabletop for me: Tycho will always be amazing, supportive, and a good sport, even when he's losing. Reminding Nick of his remaining shots on Turn 1 was peak, and Nick is always amazingly nice as well, so this match was a joy to watch, even if Chaos got slaughtered.

I can imagine the storyline behind that Volcano Lance taking out the Broadsides instead of the Stormsurge is that the T'au commander intercepted a Chaos communication that informed them that the Chaos Knight was about to target the Stormsurge, so they commanded the Broadsides to send a purposefully poorly-encrypted vox message talking about how their battle suits were hardened against Imperial weapons, so there's no way that a bunch of cultists using old Imperial equipment could harm them, in a (successful) attempt to anger the commander of the Chaos Knight and cause them to make a tactical error and save the Stormsurge while sacrificing the Broadsides for the Greater Good.

Awesome battle report, played in the perfect spirit. Nice to see Nick play a more focussed rather than purely fluffy list. He played it perfectly. A few small cheap sacrificial to lure the chaos in and then a nasty counter strike. May have to tone it back down a bit for the next report :) It was great to watch as my list is similar to Nick's, I have 3 tanks rather than the storm surge and 2 piranha rather than the 2 stealth suit units, so tactics should easily be transferable.

I have a question though: since Tycho marked the Venomcrawler with Nurgle, and thus choosing Sustained would have given him critical hits on 5+, wouldn't this also have worked with his overwatch at 30:55, thus scoring a bunch of more hits? I know that with overwatch it hits on 6s, but a crit always hit, so that's my question. Cheers!

I checked both the wording of Fire Overwatch, which says the selected unit shoots like it is the shooting phase, and Dark Pact, which says each time a unit is selected to shoot or fight (does not appear to be phase locked by this wording) that unit can make a Dark Pact to gain either lethal hits or sustained hits. So, I believe that may be correct rules as written. Would that work then with for example a Plasmancer with Immortals that get critical hits on a 5+ because of the Plasmancer? Sometimes it seems the wording of the core rules and stratagems is how something general functions in game unless the wording of an army rule, detachment rule, or unit datasheet ability overrides that.

@@eliabescotti7449 Yeah, I double checked and it does say that a hit is scored on an unmodified 6 regardless of ballistic skill or modifiers, so no critical hits on a 5+ occurring. It doesn't specify that critical hits do not occur since I have seen lethal hits and sustained hits occur on fire overwatch since 6s are always critical hits and those abilities always occur on a hit roll of 6. Otherwise, hits will occur only on a lower dice roll when a unit's ability specifies for example that unit hits on a 5+ like kataphron destroyers when using Fire Overwatch.
