And people wonder why Square Enix is no longer doing exclusive games, Sony putting more games on PC and other platforms, game costs are so out of control. Like people get so mind blown that when the fanboys brag about 60+ million ps5s being sold or whatever, its not translating to games selling, and game costs being so much more require more sales. This is why people need to stop bringing up console sales, if people arent buying the games. Theres plenty of people that buy a console and all they place is cod, fifa, madden and GTA. And a vast majority of them are on playstation.

Companies think lets just throw a ton of money into developing a game will lead to a ton of sales, all that does is make the game need mores sales in order to turn a profit. Not the case. Theres reasons why more people are playing more live service based titles, like Fortnite, or cod or now path of exile 2 when its out. Idc what anyone says, the game output that Sony has done this generation is without a doubt their weakest. They had one of the worse gaming blunders since the Wii U imo with concord, and their "biggest" game this year was a lego game based on horizon that also launched on PC and switch. The only ones who say their output has been top notch are blind fanboys.

I get corporate suits are the core problem with the gaming industry now, but how come no one is calling out the consumers? I don't like it one bit, but Sony exclusives do sell really well. In my opinion the modern audience is the ones that need everything fed to them, because they don't have the brain cells nor patience to see a complex game through. So in short this audience told the corporations "Yes please hold my hand and tell me I'm a good boy", and I don't feel sorry for them.

"Cinematic gaming" is oversaturated and inappropriately applied in games right now. At least in my eyes. "Line go up forever," is, unsurprisingly, unsustainable. Graphical fidelity can do alot, but making higher environmental interactivity, increased player agency in how they effect the evironment (except in the more obvious and violent ways) and making the game feel like a living or atleast lived in world? THAT can do far much more than the simplified, homogenous, yet graphically, supposedly, better looking game that plays like a movie where you press a button to succeed in the quick time events.

@@djstef4549 It just goes to show you how little the gameplay "feels fun" if it feels like there's more cutscenes than gameplay. The issue is that modern gaming disguises cutscenes as "walking moments". Where you are in control of your character, but you're not in the "gameplay". You're walking alongside an NPC having a conversation. You're walking down a path to the next combat sequence. Oh neat, they put in an easy to solve puzzle in your way to pad the runtime and make you feel like you are playing a video game. It may not literally be more cutscene than gameplay, but the issue is that it is heavy on the cutscenes, and breaks the gameplay so often that it feels like you're watching more than playing.

In my opinion, the term "video game" is a misnomer that fails to capture the essence of what these experiences should be. To me, they are simply games, and the industry's increasing focus on the "video" aspect undermines the fundamental joy of interactive entertainment. Many companies seem more invested in delivering long, unskippable cinematics and visually stunning cutscenes, often at the expense of gameplay quality, animations, and mechanics. When I sit down to play a game, I want to engage with challenging mechanics, explore interactive worlds, and enjoy fluid, responsive controls. Unfortunately, too many modern titles prioritize cinematic storytelling over these core elements, resulting in sub-par gameplay experiences. These games often feel more like passive movies than active games. If I wanted to watch a movie, I would do just that. The immersive nature of games should stem from their interactivity, not from mimicking Hollywood blockbusters. The industry needs to remember that the strength of games lies in their ability to offer unique, engaging experiences that movies simply cannot provide. By focusing on improving gameplay and mechanics, developers can ensure that games remain a distinct and vibrant medium, rather than becoming mere movie-like simulations.

The game length sometimes depends on the genre, for RPGs it makes sense that it is 80 to 100 hours because the game is story and side quests focused, for a platformer it makes sense that it is only 20 hours because the game is gameplay focused , but nowadays almost all AAA games are graphics and Story focused and everything else has been thrown away

I hate long modern games, it's mainly because they fill their games with BS busy work and not enjoyable content. I also hated how the industry went from different studios designing a game around a targeted audience and changed to what they called "stream lining" their games for a wider audience during the late 2000's. Current day they just use the term "modern audience" but also attack their audience. This industry is stupid. AAA needs to collapse.

You know what I don't get is why Sony can't just make video games instead of pushing cinematic feeling movie style games you know.b it's okay if they want to make a movie star game but you know they could also make regular games without dei and woke garbage in it. You know, I also think that you could make a video game for 5 million or less with a people who know what they're doing versus hiring a bunch noobs who only worked on one game or no games at all. Now ask for the amount of money they spend on video games because it's mismanagement of the money, and hearing the excuse that video games are hard to make or they're expensive is a lie. A good example of that would have to be Concord because of the fact that they worked on the game for God knows how long and most of the time it was broken. 400 million on the video game that's like almost half a billion right there. Like I can imagine how much they wasted on the last of us factions before they they pulled the plug on it. I feel like instead of game studios focusing on Dei or hiring gay people to fit a quarter maybe they should set a road map for how they're going to make their game set a budget and go with that and if it goes over budget a little bit and it's okay.

Just compare Xenoblade and Final Fantasy to see Alexx's point. Xeno is a classic open world JRPG title while FF is now a walking sim with scripted events in between cutscenes. All 3 Xeno games on the Switch are seen as successes while the last 3 FF are flops.

Nah, you have this all wrong. Shortening length is basically a synonym for reducing cost whilst retaining perceived production value. And like it or not, in a bunch of game categories those production values really matter, especially when establishing a new IP. The reality is that if you are entering a market where the visuals are going to get judged, if your game doesn't look visually competitive you're likely screwed from the off! Especially on console, where its practically mandatory to keep up with the established level of presentation for that generation or immediately get trashed for looking like an title. Allegedly dated looking games are rarely big hits. Not saying I'm a fan in so-called "streamlining", because I can't count the number of arguments I've had with producers over retaining side/extra content when their argument is if "if only 10% of players are going to see that part, why should we spend 4% of the budget on it? It makes more sense to spend that time/money on a flashy intro that everyone has to sit through at least once." And trust me, I was dealing with that BS years before Layden had his moment at the top. So trust me, blaming Layden specifically for that is wrong because that line of thinking goes back 20+ years and was rife across the industry.

The issue is that Sony just doesn't care about they're fans anymore. They'd rather please investers. The problem with this line of thinking is that if you luse syte of what made you great as a company in the first place to the average person you luse everything.

I’ll take it a little further, it isn’t just Sony but also Square Enix after Sakaguchi left. Remember FFXII’s development. It was a lot longer than the prior games and unnecessary budget. FF XIII had behind the shoulder cinematic elements and felt less like a game and more of a movie in terms of gameplay.

I disagree, many people don't want long games, what we want is replayable games. Cinematic games don't have that often because the focus on the story is so much that once you experience it, replaying it doesn't do anything. Shmup crowd are happy with short games and replaying it over and over and trying to get better, increasing score, etc. Tmnt shredder revenge is posibly the best tmnt beat en up, only issue is that it's too long at 2 hours instead of the 30 minutes it usually takes with the old ones Friends and I have beat old tmnt beat em ups and others single or multiplayer dozens of times but have not with shredders revenge because if how long it is. I agree games have to be more involved, more fun rather than long.

Agreed, I don't want games to waste time, being long for the sake of being long. Personally I've beaten many games over and over, especially old nes games or arcade games because I can just pick up the controller, best them in 1,2 or 3 sirtings and have a blast. You start the game and instant gameplay. No missions feel like a waste. Not saying I don't like long games or that they are bad. But often now games focus way more on story and cinematics than the actual game being fun or engaging.vor have such innane engagement in the form of press x to listen, press x to look, press x to kick debri of the path etc which is confused for gameplay.

You also have shareholders, these studios are focusing on the wrong people, if they would focus on the actual gamers (those who buy the product) instead of the shareholders they would realize they could make more money putting out a great product, and that would make shareholders just as happy. I agree with you on a lot of your points. These game studios used to be run by people who were passionate about games, that actually played games, they pushed the boundaries of what a game could be in both game play and story while still being engaging and fun. Now those studios are run by suits who only care about money and deadlines, they all fit into the same mold, as you stated the "eye candy". On the flip side you have studios that put out games like Baldur's Gate 3 that show these so-called AAA studios you can make a great game without spending 100's of millions of dollars and people will buy it. That fun factor is gone from a lot of games, and they are released incomplete or as a buggy train wreck from hell.

Less people experiencing parts of a game the deeper you go into the game has just been a sad reality of games. Not everyone that tries your game is going to like it enough to keep playing it; this is just how society and reality work in regards to literally any media not just games. This has been a problem since the 90s, and Shawn Laden trying to present it as a new problem is just a pure goober move. Case and point even though I bought the version of Nioh 2 that comes with it's DLCs I never actually finished the base game or even touch the DLCs. My GPU died when I was literally like 95% through the base game, and by the time I got it fixed I just never got around to finishing it. I was too rusty on the game mechanics, and I had forgotten a lot of the story meaning I had no idea why I was doing what I was doing. I was at the final boss of the mission I was on, and I don't want to quit the mission and lose progress. However, I'm admittedly not that good at the game anymore so I can't beat said boss :(.

It depends on the game. Story rpg games need some good length. Shooters don’t have to be that long but about mid range. Like the Witcher was a good length.

I completely agree with you. Big budget and high production games with exceptional graphics can be good if they are done right. The key is being done right though. The current version of Cyberpunk 2077 is a great example. It's one of the best looking games on the market and offers up one helluva cinematic experience. The Witcher 3 is another great example... And that games a decade old. Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice is a perfect example of a bad game with state of the art graphics trying to offer a cinematic experience. God of War: Ragnarok is sorta half-and-half with me. The graphics are good, the story and cutscenes are good, the combat is amazing... But the game really wasn't put together like it should have been. It's off. Not enough for me to hate the game, but it's enough to keep me from wanting to play it for more than a few hours at a time, 2 days a week. POE2 is so good that I took a weeks vacation for the sole purpose of getting lost in the game. I am too... I'm gonna play the shit outta POE2! I rented an Air BnB with fiber optic Internet service and everything. I've never gone that far out on a game before. POE2 is a horse of a different color though. It's the game to end all games. The game that every AAA publisher is gonna hate... And I can't wait!

Idk. He also green lit A LOT more variance. Medievil Remake, Dreams, Concrete Genie, birth of Astro Bot, birth of PSVR (laundry list of games), Ico/Shadow of Colossus Remake, Last Guardian, Last of Us actually had multiplayer which was lowkey fun as heck, God of War reboot would have began under him and honestly that’s just what I can think of without looking anything up. I mean the teams made the games but if we are attributing what comes out under them as kind of “their era”. All I would say if you said Jim Ryan and Herman Hulst…I would say give me Shawn Layden any day. There’s a reason he was abruptly departing PlayStation, and criticizes the way things are going. That NDA will expire someday and we will know the turmoil, he wasn’t going with the grain.
