There’s only one thing more embarrassing than an instant death - an instant death you totally deserved. Like the times a game tells you not to do something again and again and you ignore it and stride into disaster, or when curiosity gets the better of you and you can’t help but try something stupid. Whether it’s a superhero smackdown in South Park, an android malfunction in Nier Automata or endless fatalities in Baldur’s Gate 3, here are the deaths we’re embarrassed to admit to.

Here's my short story with Nier Automata's self destruction: I really thought it was just a troll feature. There's this whole bit at the start of the game where you try to disable it and 9S won't let you, but then you can do it anyway and he promises not to tell. But then I enabled it again anyway and tried it to see what it did. I was at the bunker, so it was an instant game over. I never even suspected that the results would be different in any other part of the game, so I never used the feature again. I thought it was there just for a joke and achievement. Imagine my surprise months later when I encountered a thread about people using it for its intended purpose.

BEFORE I got my training in IT, I was extremely tech illiterate, so I didn't understand what 2B's OS in a bid to gain that little bit of disk space. I'm essentially glad I learned that lesson in a videogame, rather than by deleting Windows on an actual PC by mistake.

My favourite BG3 insta-kill I've had is where you are tasked by the god of the githyanki to kill the visitor in the artefact. I thought "She's probably exaggerating her powers, if I just don't do it it'll be a story point and we'll move on." Nope, immediate death when she realised I'd refused to do what I said, fair to say I won't make that mistake again.

In the point and click game Deja Vu for the NES, there was a "self" option that allowed you to try to use any item on yourself. Some items you had to use on yourself to finish the game. The game also gave you a gun... which provided a way to have been an entry on this list.

In UnMetal in the last level I punched the gas tank until it exploded. Avoided my urge to punch all the tank so far - but with that I couldn't resist any longer. 😂 Well, I kinda did expect that result and also it was just the start of the level so not much progress lost, so I found it rather funny.
