1974 was the final season of the old NFL as the playoffs were decided on a rotation basis. 1975 was the start of the NFL playoffs being decided based on record.

And the Los Angeles Rams got jammed in the last 2 seasons during those games they lost: 1973: The Rams(12-2) lost the Divisional Playoff Game at Dallas(10-4). 1974: The Rams(10-4) lost the NFC Championship Game at Minnesota(10-4). Earlier in the season, the Rams defeated the Minnesota Vikings at Los Angeles, 20-17.

@@Jiltedin2007 the Rams in the 70s had a defense that was comparable to the Steelers in pure domination...they just kept running into the Dallas/Minnesota buzz saw every year in the playoffs...and somehow probably their "worst team" of that era broke through in 79...and played even or better than Pittsburgh for 3-1/2 quarters of Super Bowl 14. The Rams great defense of that era seems to be lost to history.

The Vikings were good enough to win 4 NFC titles but in Super Bowl competition Bud Grant's teams was a flop. In Super Bowl IV they were overwhelm by the Kansas City Chiefs. In Super Bowl VÌII they were overrunned by the Dolphins. In Super Bowl IX they were overpowered by the Steelers. In Super Bowl XI they faced the Raiders. The Vikings did not stand a chance and the Raiders stole the show from Vikings.

If replay had been around, it would have been a fumble. Marion should not have over ruled his fellow refs. That said, Pittsburgh would have likely won anyway. Minnesota's offense did nothing all day and there was no sign that would have changed.

No player or fan would have complained if it was a fumble; Marion makes the classic mistake of seeing something that didn’t happen. It s better to miss the call then invent something. The ball was coming out before Browns butt hit the ground. The correct call was initially made, yet overturned by the guy who saw the play form Browns's back, NO WAY could he see the ball coming out nor did he have any business overturning that call. Incidentally, this was the same official involved in the Rob Lytle fumble 17:27

This video exposes a major issue with the Vikings offense of the 1970's. While I understand that QB Fran Tarkenton is right handed and they have an All-Pro RT in Ron Yary, the team was not very well balanced and predominately operated to their right. This made it more simpler to game plan against them. The previous SB, they had to start a 3rd stringer at RG but continued to operate predominantly on that side, especially in key situations, with little to no success. In this SB, the Steelers had either back ups or sick players on the opposite side, yet the Vikings operated to their right. It seemed like all of the Vikings SB opponents were in the huddle with them, they were that well prepared.

Viking defense did its job, holding Pittsburgh's offense to only 14 points, far better than Buffalo and Oakland did. But the offense did even worse than Kilmer's Redskins did in Super Bowl VII, who I believe gained more than Minnesota's 119 yards.

That was devastating. If you look a few seconds before, Tarkenton had excellent protection. No reason for him to thro it high. Gilliam played with a fractured wrist, have zoomed in on the play, he never had it. As he was coming down from his leap, he was bobbling it then WHAM ! This hit was about as hard as Tatums on Sammy White, minus the helmet coming off.

Tarkenton said pain killers for his arm soreness that season caused him to lose some of the feeling in the arm. That's why he said he was throwing high all season. Just before Fred Cox missed a field goal (following a second quarter recovered fumble), Tark also threw too high to an open Foreman at the 5-yard line. Would have given Minnesota a chance to score the first touchdown. In the end, Pittsburgh was clearly the better team and the deserved champions.

I always feel sorry for the Vikings when I watch these highlights. Being a Bills fan I know how they feel. Nothing was more frustrating then getting all the way to the Super Bowl four times and nothing going right. But at least the Bills held a lead in three of their Super Bowls. Minnesota never had the lead in any of their four Super Bowl appearances and we're shut out in the first half in all four of them!

One of only two cold weather Super Bowls with Super Bowl XLVIII being the other. This one was definitely unplanned however. Makes you wonder how New Orleans could've screwed the pooch and had the Superdome incomplete and why the NFL didn't have a contingency plan that didn't include a decrepit college stadium. Like the ol' Virginia Slims tagline in regards to the NFL, "You've come a long way baby".

The Vikings were simply A Cursed Team, similar to Denver and Buffalo. Four Trips to the Super Bowl, and all four times coming up empty. But Denver, of the 3 mentioned, did break that and win Three Super Bowls since going 0-4 from 1977 to 1989.

I agree, but nonetheless I still think Pittsburgh would have won anyways. The Vikings offense just couldn't find the endzone that day.

I have to disagree. It's usually the "better" team that makes the breaks it needs and takes advantage of it's opponent's miscues. Minnesota shouldn't have fielded a second-quarter punt deep in its own end. Two plays later, Pittsburgh gets a safety. Tarkenton handled the ball terribly most of the way, throwing high and being directly responsible for two fumbles - one on the safety and one at the Pittsburgh 5-yard line. Bill Brown fumbled the second-half kickoff. Pittsburgh recovered and it led directly to the first touchdown. Give the Vikings the Larry Brown fumble. It's 9-6 with plenty of time left and you'd be hard pressed to convince anyone that Minnesota would have driven even into field goal range. Minnesota had just 119 total yards, nine first downs and a minuscule 21 minutes TOP. Pittsburgh dominated all day. The difference between these teams was much more than the 16-6 score showed.

The main player in every SB defeat for the Vikings was Bud Grant. His teams were outmaneuvered and manhandled in EVERY Super Bowl they played (4). No in-game adjustments whatsoever. Perhaps he should've been less concerned about his players standing "appropriately" for the national anthem-while pushing his right-wingism-and more concerned about football strategy, ehh? It's completely insane how so many Vikings fans and Minnesota media hold him in such high regard. Failure after failure shouldn't be ignored, Super Bowl appearances be damned.

The Vikings were good enough to win 4 NFC titles but in Super Bowl competition Bud Grant's teams was a flop. In Super Bowl IV they were overwhelm by the Kansas City Chiefs. In Super Bowl VÌII they were overrunned by the Dolphins. In Super Bowl IX they were overpowered by the Steelers. In Super Bowl XI they faced the Raiders. The Vikings did not stand a chance and the Raiders stole the show from Vikings.

@@acsmooth110 This Steelers' game was their best chance to win. Vikings 3rd trip to the big game and Pittsburgh's first. In the other 3, they faced very experienced, perennial winning teams. This Steelers' team was still very young and the Vikings should have been able to rely on their experience, but it didn't happen.

As the old saying goes, you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. Minnesota's offensive line was simply out-muscled and out-matched by Pittsburgh's defensive line. That's why the Viking offense didn't score a single point the entire game.

Little known fact: The Vikings are the only team Super Bowl history to not score an offensive point in a SB game. Their only points was by a punt blocked for a touchdown. Then the kicker missed the extra point.

Typical Minnesota frickin' luck in the frickin' Super Bowl....Roy Gerela (He was brother of my other team,B.C.Lions-CFL, he was a soccer style kicker and played multiple positions early in his career)slips while kicking opening kick-off of second half, oh yeah!!!!!! Minny has a golden opportunity, only 2 points down, they can get all of the momentum....Bob Brown......FUMBLE, ugggghhhhh!!!!!

Don't forget, Gerela slipping on kickoff causing a turnover for the other team halso happened 4 years later against Dallas an was a key moment in the game.
