Help is needed The Palos Verdes Peninsula Association of Realtors (PVPAR) has aligned with the Palos Verdes Peninsula Rotary Club to find ways to support residents impacted by the recent Rancho Palos Verdes landslides. Both organizations are helping with dinners for the residents, facilitating the needs residents may have by checking our resource lists to connect them with a donor, and whatever else may come up as this situation evolves.
I am the President of PVPAR and started a task force to help coordinate relief efforts. If you are interested in volunteering or donating goods, please contact jasonbuck@remaxpv.com

The Back Story: how did we get here?!
The Portuguese Bend Landslide in Rancho Palos Verdes, California is 260 acres of rolling hills and spectacular ocean views. At a depth of 135 feet there is a layer of Bentonite which is compressed volcanic clay, and the ground moves due to water dynamics and coastal erosion. Before 2 years of heavy rains, the landslide was moving 1 inch a month, 600 feet over 60 years, which was manageable and could be maintained. More than average rains over the last two years have escalated the movement. The City of RPV recently discovered there is a second slip plane at 300 feet deep that is moving 3.5 - 4.5 feet a week. New cracks, fissures, and broken pipes have become constant maintenance and construction.
Gas and Electricity are now cut off with two days’ notice in approximately 4 neighborhoods leaving residents scrambling to replace vital utilities.
Approximately
130 homes in Portuguese Bend
53 homes in Portuguese Bend Beach Club
45 homes in Rolling Hills
55 homes in the Seaview neighborhood
Total of 344 homes are now without gas or electricity. Some properties need extensive repairs as well as propane conversions and solar energy utilities. Most homes have gas generators buzzing throughout the day to provide electricity. Residents were able to hook up generators to pumps to keep the sewer going, if not they would be forced to move.
CA Water is dedicated to maintaining service. Watering wells were installed in the past but have failed in recent years and many of the canyons are fueling the fissures with runoff water.
There is major water control infrastructure that is needed to prevent more water from entering the fissure and slide area. At the shoreline, there are about 3 football fields of land that have risen out of the ocean nearly 30 feet in the last 7 months.
There is a hump at the Portuguese Bend Beach Club that appears to continue to rise, already about 30 plus feet higher than the original level.
The amount of change in this area is unfathomable. Many of these residents have lived in their home for over 30 years and have their life savings invested in the property. Several elderly families need assistance to remain in the area and maintenance to keep up with the changing environment.
