Saint John is a small city with an artsy feel. During covid/winter, not a lot going on because of shut downs and restrictions. I've always loved the old brown stone buildings and architecture uptown. Beautifully refinished apartments with original brick walls, high ceilings, and hard wood floors - all close to waterfront, reasonably priced. During the summer (normal, non covid times) there are festivals, cruise ships, bars, tours, outside markets etc. Like you guys said, the beauty is you don't have to go far to get into nature. NB has beautiful provincial and national parks to explore in the summer and great camping. Lots of different beaches along the Bay of Fundy, Saint John River, St Lawrence River, and the Kennebecasis River. Lots of beautiful country side to explore along the Bellisle Bay and Evandale area, Gagetown. Lived here all my life and still discovering new things every year. As to hunting, that's all part of our culture as well. People hunt not just for the fun of it, but for the meat they can freeze to feed their families for a long time. Besides, the deer population has exploded to point of being a nuisance. There are restrictions on how many deer per year can be hunted as well.

I’m originally from Moncton NB,moved to Saskatchewan about 10 years ago in a small town,not saying everyone here is not friendly but it’s a very different atmosphere,in the east you could easily wave at a stranger and start a conversation,here not so much,but could be the small town I’ve been living in lol.I’ve been craving badly moving back out east,for a very long time now,a friend of mine recommended that I would absolutely love Saint John,since the last few years it’s really changed from back in the days,I’m very artsy and heard there is so many festivals in the summers,flea markets,artsy people and bars to connect with people,once Covid is over,I am planning a trip down there for sure. I’ve always considered the East Coast to feel like home in any provinces there,people are very friendly. Glad you guys are loving it so far,these videos are awesome,I enjoy watching them. :)

However, a lot of people do hunt and I figure there’s plenty of room for them to do their thing and for me to do mine! As for man-made entertainment, what we do have, we love. The Pub Down Under and Uptown Pub Down Under is a great place to see live music, my friend Josh is the stage manager there and is a member of several popular local bands. SJ also has two city wide music festivals such as Area 506 which literally happens on the dock yard, and Quality Block Party which is held in several venues throughout the city. I'm thinking of moving to St John from the states. I was there pre Covid for a few days and nights. Stayed at the BunkHaus hostel. Loved it. Question. I heard that healthcare is really not that great in the maritimes because medical personnel have to jump through hoops to get qualified there. Wait times for patients are ridiculously long, etc. Could you wait in on this and compare medical care in New Brunswick to that of say Quebec or Ontario?
@atribecalledowens3 жыл бұрын
Can't really weigh in as neither of us have much experience using the health care system anywhere! Knock on wood! It's pretty slow country wide though that is without question.
@rps16893 жыл бұрын
Healthcare system in NB is below to average by Canadian standards, but access to primary care is worse. You won't find a family doctor and walk-in clinics are few and far between and lack procedures and treatments that are available in other provinces like ON and BC. Biggest complaint from doctors here is that it is hard for them to access the resources they need for their patients and at times the resources they want to access are not available to treat their patients the way they want to. Also NB has some of the unhealthiest and unfit folk in the country that puts a burden on the system. Most lab work is done in hospitals, as opposed to private labs we see elsewhere in the country; basically NB is quite backwards when it comes to its system. As for Saint John, there is a reason why it is one of the least sought after places for Canadians to live even with the affordable houses situation.

Me and my wife are relocating to the East coast in spring of 2022 once her maternity leave ends. We both work remote from home so it can finally happen. We are still debating between Halifax and Saint John. Saint John seems to be the more risky choice due to much fewer job prospects in the event we need to seek new employment in the future. Halifax is more expensive but feels like a bigger city than it really is and also very close to nature with much more job opportunities in our field. However, our money would go alot further in Saint John when house shopping. Do you guys run a business or work remotely from home for a company? Would you be able to find work in Saint John if you needed to? Enjoyed your videos, I hope you keep making them!

I was born and raised in Saint John and lived there until the age of 30. I then relocated to the Middle East and the USA for a few years for work and travel. In 2003, I returned to Saint John with a renewed love for my hometown. However, as a long time ethical vegan, I would have to say that as much as I love New Brunswick, the animal-killing fervour that is so prevalent here sickens me beyond measure. I currently live in the Grand Lake area (near Fredericton) and believe me when I say, the hunting/fishing/animal-killing vibe is immeasurably more pervasive in the Fredericton area than it is in Saint John. Even the so-called “white collar” types hunt and fish. Northern New Brunswick is also another very sad area for wildlife. The government has had to impose hunting restrictions in that zone because many of these beautiful and innocent beings have been hunted to very low numbers. I live in a rural area and hunting season is an extremely difficult time for me and my family (and of course the poor animals). We are constantly guarding our neighbourhood to ensure that the hunters operate within the law. Many still believe that 400 metres is the same as 400 feet!!!!! Well, I’m right there to explain the difference to them. My neighbourhood is also home to a beautiful animal sanctuary called Wallflower Sanctuary, owned and operated by 2 incredible vegan ladies who relocated here from Ontario over 3 years ago.
@atribecalledowens3 жыл бұрын

Welcome to New Brunswick and Saint John specifically. Life is slower than in Ontario but Covid19 has shut things down big time. However, we in NB are ok with anything our government says to limit the spread of Covid so you will likely not find any east coasters resisting covid restrictions hence the low covid infections and deaths.
@atribecalledowens3 жыл бұрын
Ah yes true. Population density could be a main factor in comparing numbers from Ontario and NB as well.

In regards to why it is called uptown - there are a couple of theories. The first one is ships would come into the harbour and the sailors would disembark and walk up the hills “up into the town”. The second one which historians say is more credible - all the main businesses, stores and banks were located in the central of city - all approaches to that area were hills - so people would say they are headed “uptown” to conduct their business or errands. I completely disagree with the socialite part. It’s not a fair assessment due to COVID. Saint John has lots to offer ranging from farmer’s markets to going to a cafe to paint. Once you integrate more into the community you’ll see house or apartment parties are a big thing (although for some reason everyone congregates in the kitchen). There were always networking events uptown, theatre, buskers, concert series, uptown events, festivals - the list goes on. Hopefully starting in May you’ll discover Queen Square market and Kingston farmer’s markets. And there are no 80 bars - it’s 80 bars, restaurants, cafes, clubs etc

@@atribecalledowens This is why it is so important to have a vegan community -- where I currently am in BC it has a strong hunting vibe as well, so I understand

Did you two have jobs waiting or did you look for work when you got there?? Feel free to pm me on facebook if you like. Mike Robinson , Thorold On. We were contemplating a move out east.
@atribecalledowens4 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike, we did not. We took the risk that we would find something once moving out here. Which we both did. As long as you are willing to take any job until you get your feet on the ground you'll be ok. Delivery jobs are in high demand. Whether it's UPS or a private company you can start almost immediately.

I like the video, but I don't stand by the belief that people are specifically nicer in one region than another because in the end of the day, there's rude and nice people everywhere. Such is not specific to a region, culture, or race. I grew up in three different continents and lived in 7countries and all I can say is that people are people and coming across kind person is just one's luck. Also it is naive to thrive in the image that we, Canadians, are kind because that should be judged by others not us.

Being nice attracts nice people most of the time! But yes, angry people are everywhere too.

Oh man, don’t go after the hunters.....do not do that! I’m from nfld and I’ve never eaten “game” , however you have to understand that it’s our heritage. It’s not mean, everything is used.
@atribecalledowens3 жыл бұрын
Understandable. But still not necessary. It is indeed mean from the perspective of the victim :)

A Tribe Called Owens hey I’m with you. I have never nor would I, but I’m just giving you sound advice. To be fair (and we have to understand both sides) , when I say it’s not mean, what I actually meant is that the animals do not suffer (long) and the hunters use every part of the animal. They are “free range” , where as the animals/deer or moose may get injured, mAimed, etc all the while they are suffering. This happens all the time in nature, not to mention for instance, in Nfld (where I’m from), the moose are dangerous. So many people get killed in vehicle accidents even in the cities (ie St. John’s). I’m not exaggerating, my son lost 3 of his friends in high school that were driving on a mid city parkway. There are no natural predators, so the moose are everywhere. Like I said, I’m with you BUT I really am just giving you advice. Like I don’t even argue anymore with “them”. And I’m from here. 🙄🙄....Btw, love your ,channel. All the best. I come from a huge “hockey family “ too. My son is/was a sport journalist. He does freelance now however, but he loved it. He got into interview many of his childhood “hero’s”, Wendall Clark, and his whole line at that time. My son is about your age (33). My dad coached, my brother played all his life , he’s in the military and went to CMR in St. Jean years ago. Blab blab ...Yes I’m long winded. Nothing else to do growing up in Nfld. 🤪

So you decided to make a vlog about Saint John's "vibe" before exploring it's most central, densely populated, historical area (Uptown) which is home to nearly everything you attempted to cover in your initial tangential review (nightlife, arts and entertainment....URBANISM)🤔. Btw, it's uptown because it's on a hill 😕. I'm guessing you haven't explored any of the other interesting neighborhoods (Mt. Pleasant, North End etc) and know nothing about SJ's history. Nevertheless, watching you squirm as you so desperately tried to stop yourselves from ranting about veganism was worth the 13:14. So, not a total loss. Anyway, don't be surprised if you experience some negativity. Newcomers are welcome providing they don't overtly state their reason for coming as "it's so cheap"... Every time I move to a place I do an immense amount of research. I know more about the history of my neighborhood in Winnipeg than most Winnipegers do.

i'd ask somebody who actually has lived in their city their whole life im in the north end by scholtens and its the worst vibes imaginable. you live in this neighborhood and you will feel the soul get sucked from your entire body

this is also coming from somebody who is quite low income tho so im gonna have a different point of view from someone who lived east or uptown

You said you’re from Niagara Falls .... lol. Literally anywhere is better that that. A folding chair set up in a dumpster in Moncton would represent improvement. Lol, your anti hunting and fishing “vibe”, yeah, you wanna keep that in SJ because there’s a ton of counties that ain’t gonna fly in. Keep your “vegan vibes” in the metro Center, or at least don’t try and shill it to the locals.

I'm not sure Niagara Falls is that bad. Plenty of good people there and close to major cities. It's also very beautiful. People travel from all over the world to see Niagara Falls. Can you say the same about the city you're from? Our anti-hunting and fishing vibe as you describe is more like a pro-kindness and compassion vibe. Why cause harm to an animal when you don't have to?
