PLEIN AIR PAINTING - Cornwall seascape at Rinsey Head

Painting en plein air on the rocks at Rinsey Head, Cornwall. Today I chose to paint a seascape at Rinsey Head from a very low viewpoint on the rocks. This was a fantastic location, although it was very noisy with the waves coming in against the rocks!
Apologies in advance for the poor sound quality! My mic let me down and the wind, combined with the sea swell, proved problematic. The visual footage was very good though - I hope you still enjoy watching and sharing the painting experience with me.

That's plein air at its finest, Andrew. Definitely not a place for the fainthearted painter, given the conditions. I'm looking forward to seeing more outdoor painting as winter comes on. I'll bet you both sleep well after a day in the fresh salty air.

Hallo Andrew, Ihr habt eine turbulente Küste vor der Haustür........ die lädt ein, Bilder und mehrere Bilder zu malen,,,, ein prächtiges Wechselspiel von Licht, Wind & Farben,,, und damit Stimmungen für die optische Wahrnehmung... Zu Deinem Bild heute, wenn Du Deine Skizzes anlegt bin immer sehr begeistert, sind voller Temperament gleichen dem was ich in Video wahrnehmen kann,, bis zur 6ten Minuten, fand ich das Szenarium großartig was das Land in der Ferne betrifft, beträgt....... dann kamen viele hinzugefügte farbige Details, ja diese "farbige" Details machen die Maler verrückt und verwirren, wenn Sie auch zu detailliert ausgeführt werden, da konkretisieren Formen und damit werden sie Strukturen...... und in der Folge geht die atmosphärische Räumlichkeit verloren, vor allem, wenn die farbige Details in der Ferne sind...... Das wilde Spiel des Meereswasser an der Küste vermag auch nicht mehr diese Atmosphäre herzustellen,, dieses Wasser vorne, wunderbar dargestellt, ging etwas der Transparenz verloren, aber ,, es war ok..... !!! Dennoch ein gutes Bild würde es mir lange anschauen und geniessen..... Du liebst, was Du siehst & malst,,, geht mir auch so. Aber diese Liebe muss gepflegt werden im Wechselspiel von Nähe und Zurückhaltung... Beste Grüße Douglas Dieser starke Wind, der das Wasser aufpeitscht, aufwühlen macht die Luft diesig & und die Konturen der Objekte verschwommen...... kenne ich von meiner alten Heimat am karibischen Meer.....

Hi Douglas thank you so much for your amazing response. You are right that I did lose this one some what - it began so promisingly. That's the thing with painting though - if you don't try things out you don't know if it can be improved. An excellent and inspiring location, Andrew. The light on the sea at 0.5 sec and 34 sec brought to mind that in many of Julius Olssen's paintings. A great result. You are so lucky to live near such locations!

I recently added dio Purple to my watercolor pallete and absolutely was surprised at the beautiful grays you can create with it. You illustrate that practice beautifully with the sky and clouds. Always happy to see you painting. :D

Andrew, I like your work very much. Great subject. Nice videogaphy. No problems with sound at this end. Lovely painting. You might have stopped at 15:00. Not as violent water, but worked for me. I appreciate you work and videos. Really liked the exhibition at the Mousehole.

Absolutely great painting, wow. Love your mix of more abstract/loose elements of the surf and the tighter cliff/hills. Looking forward to more of your winter plein air videos. If you have advice for painting in adverse conditions like rain, cold, would love to hear.

Thank you so much Dan 😀 - my advice for adverse conditions would be to wrap up well and dress for the weather. I might get myself something to stand on which will insulate my feet from the cold damp ground - If my feet get cold I find it hard to continue painting

Hi Andrew. This looks like a fun day out. It must be nice to have some company as well as help with the filming. This is another beautiful plein air painting. This looks like a great example of having to chase the constantly changing light conditions. How do you handle that? Do you keep an idea of what you wanted to capture, what it was when you started or just what you can see as you go?

Nice spontaneous effects created in the surf whitewater with the rigger brush ... I'll have to give that a try ...

Great stuff Andrew can I ask what thickness is the ply please ? Maybe I will change from heavy mdf , how many coats of primer / gesso please ?

Thank you 😊 The ply was 9mm thick. I painted over an old painting but it would have had at least 3 coats of gesso primer 👍🏻

I was happy with it until the white water 😅 It was worth a try but I would change my paint application next time 👍🏻
