I'll always appreciate how despite autistic coded characters always being treated as "open season" on comedy shows, the only thing Judah is ever actually made fun of is his (glorious) beard. And even the one time Judah is genuinely insulted for it, it makes your heart sink.
@radicalpasta704010 ай бұрын
As an autistic person myself, I 100% agree that Judah is autism coded. In general, Bojack horseman was really good about doing low key representation. For example, the show included many LGBTQ characters without making a big deal out of it (opposite of Disney’s habit of doing a press release for there “First gay” whatever, and then that character appearing for like 10 seconds)
@raysay181810 ай бұрын
The representation is spectacular in this fashion. They did so well with the person forward type demonstration of humanity. No matter how cartoony the show got every character was real. Judah really encapsulated the idea of him being a *person* ...with autism instead of "the autistic person" type tokenism. And this is true for every demographic the show represented. really there wasn't really a "gay character" there were characters who were gay but never as their whole "thing". Even with Todd being asexual and having a whole episode around it Todd never felt like "the asexual character" he felt like Todd and Todd just happens to be asexual and he had a big self discovery moment about it in one episode. And that's beautiful.

@strangeactuallylegume10 ай бұрын
They just let characters be characters. They aren’t gay characters or autistic characters or whatever character. They’re characters that happen to be gay, that happen to be autistic, that happen to be whatever. It still affects them and can even be a part of their character development, but it’s never them.
@anthonydelfino617110 ай бұрын
Since you brought it up... I'm a gay, and giving us Lefou as the first gay was insulting. The guy's name literally means "the fool" Disney is really far behind the times here. The kind of "representation" they gave in that movie was what we were happy to see 25 years ago, where we were just included at all. But nowadays, and not just for gay characters, we want more three dimensional characters. I think they do this a lot better with a character like Katie in "Michells vs the Machines" Full fantastic characters who being gay isn't the defining part of who they are.

I remember thinking stilton was really great and loved that plotline - they really loved each other, had fun, were supportive of each other... and yet, his family was everything for him - and that heritage wasn't welcoming to her. For one reason or another, it wasn't about having an "everything man" (suave, well dressed, well off, handsome, stable family, polite, considerate) but rather a competent man who has his own foundation - but also - loves her for what she loves - her work.

to me the biggest thing, though, that set him apart from the other boyfriends Carolyn had is he was a really good listener. If you watch her with the others, they would pretend to listen, but not really pay attention. Ralph gets close, but you can tell he was listening to try to get to a solution as opposed to sometimes just being there to let someone process emotions or get things off their chest.
@FoxMoon89Ай бұрын
@@anthonydelfino6171 "...set [Judah] apart from the other boyfriends Carolyn had is he was a really good listener" Yes! Ralph was constantly trying to pull Princess Carolyn away from work, which is her drive and passion. He's well-intentioned, but he doesn't really see her value or what's valuable to her. On top of that, her history with Cooper Thomas Rogers Wallace Jr. (missing from this video entirely??) and his family set the stage for PC's relationship as a working class woman to old money. The Stiltons were obviously racist, but Copper's family dynamic with PC shows us that life would never had made her happy even if they weren't.

I always felt bad that Princess Carolyn kept getting miscarriages anytime she became pregnant. She's someone you want to root for in her wanting to become a mother and to have a healthy baby, but then hearing how many times this happened to her after telling Ralph how many occurrences this had happen to her, just for her to run out of eggs is truly heart breaking. I'm glad she finally caved in on the adoption because in truth, you just never know how many kids who are often happy being raised by someone else and not with their biological parents. Most kids can understand that their own parents aren't fit to be parents or could struggle with the financials of raising one in hoping to give them all the necessities to be happy and healthy. As much as you want to go the traditional old fashion route of making a baby yourself, the off chances of a miscarriages is random and out of our hands, it's nobodys fault. PC's Mother had no right to insult PC when she got her 1st miscarriage, regardless if this was an excuse for them to live in luxury. It does almost make me curious how the rest of PC's siblings are doing now and if most of them came to her wedding or celebrated her having ruthie as her baby.

@KyleRayner1210 ай бұрын
I think the interesting thing about Vincent, and the reason the relationship lasted as long as it did, is that he's such an obvious rebound candidate and foil to Bojack, but in a different way than Mr. Peanutbutter. While Mr. PB is fun and optimistic instead of self-destructively depressed, Vincent Adultman is more of a professional foil. Specifically, Princess Carolyn's arc focused a lot on balancing her personal and professional lives, and aside from the fact that he was her client (and therefore the worst possible fusion of those things), Bojack's most immediately obvious flaw was that his lack of ability to appropriately work towards and put stock in his career made PC's life harder all the time, and he lacked the consideration to take that into account. While this was really reflective of his more general issues with selfishness, it manifests superficially as someone who cannot take business seriously. Enter Vincent, an adult man who makes a point of listening, emotional maturity, and focus on business. In some ways, he seems like the ideal partner for a driven woman like PC. The issue is that in spite of his superficial ability to listen to her and agree to do things like go on vacations occasionally, he still doesn't take his personal life seriously enough to be honest with PC. Hence why his secret family was the final straw. Business and alcohols and adult rides are great, but without the ability to balance them with simpler things, communication between them was never going to be able to get deep enough to be meaningful.

Concerning the Ralph v Judah debate, I think they were both actually very similar in compatibility with PC. They were both attentive to her needs and offered similarly useful advice(adoption, don’t make work your entire life). And they were both pushed away when PC was stressed. Which is a familiar theme on the show- its a classic bojack move. The reason why pc gets her happy ending was that she healed her trauma. All the people in the show that get good endings (Todd, Diane, pc) actively grew to first accept their imperfect selves and then allowed others to love them. I feel one of the major turning points in pc’s growth is when she asks for Venessa gekko for advice, something she never did before, and realizing that the rivalry that she had with Venessa was only in her own mind. From then on she became more open to the possibility that those around her aren’t necessarily all transactional or adversarial. PC’s entire growth arc, you could see her open up to prior “rivals” who were trying to be helpful including Todd, Diane. While placing boundaries on things that were toxic-Bojack, her job. At a certain point she was able to be vulnerable and let Judah into her life. I don’t think Judah or Ralph were perfect for pc, cause there is no perfect relationship. Bojack’s struggle with relationships was he wanted a “perfect” relationships to fix him. And that didn’t work out- cause that never works out. PC in contrast worked incredibly hard to heal herself, and from that she created a life not defined by her relationships, but strengthened by her relationships. From pc’s perspectives, I don’t think she thinks “thank god I dumped Ralph to find Judah”or “I wish I stayed with Ralph instead of Judah.”They are both positive influences in her life, that she will treasure.

Judah is great, we stan Judah in this household. While I sometimes think PC should've ended up with Ralph, I'm glad she ended up with Judah. He was there for her and was hands down the best assistant she ever had, and if I recall from a video you did before (might be the PC timeline) Judah was the most consistent of PC's relationships, being there and actually giving what she needed in the long run

8:52 This reminds me of BoJack’s monologue to Taneisha in Love and/or Marriage about settling for someone you can halfway tolerate so you don’t end up trying to fill a hole in your life later, only this one is selfish and manipulative instead of selfless and reassuring. 12:49 - 13:05 I cannot wait for you to go in-depth on this in your breakdown of “The Amelia Earhart Story.” Tear that emotionally manipulative, irresponsible hairball of a woman a new one. 19:05 - 19:21 As an autistic BoJack fan, I appreciate this observation. 19:30 Suddenly, ToonrificTariq. I wonder who’s going to be next in this BoJack Horseman Relationship Timeline series.

The fact that “Vincent Adultman” was able to get away with underage drinking (at a restaurant, mind you,) is both Hilarious, and terrifying at the same time. 5:29

As someone who related to PC since day 1, this made me cry. We like Ralph because of the potential we saw in their relationship, but nothing beats reality and that reality is Judah.

I think you need to mention Home/PCs home/Each Characters Home. I think something to mention is PCs first boyfriend the fox - her first love while still living under her mother roof. (She admits she was acting as the main maid that she was doing her mothers work from cooking to cleaning, she helps the Fox with him position on the football team/college success, she’s removing bottles from her mom and constantly helping her cleaning her or putting her to bed. And she works by going to school having her own grades and doing well enough to graduate.) From that home and first boyfriend experience she’s given 2 responses 1: this is your life under the Fox household within the house as a member of the house these are your roles and duties and any heirs have names picked out for you already you have no decisions to make they are made for you. You do the job your told as a ‘wife/mother’ not a banged up maid/help. = in this moment you can see the joy she had with the son diminish that she’s worried about being in that relationship with those rules. And 2) miscarriage and the loss of a relationship with her mother. The idea she threw the best possible option for her life away. That her being impregnated and a agreeing to Mr.Foxes terms would have been her only way to make it up in the world and be wealthy be successful be happy be lavish and include extended family like the mother in law. But how her miscarriage is her fault and because of that she ruined her only future and opportunity. And how that moment for her character means so much with bojack: who is essentially the Fox son and her own mother the drunk who blames her for every mistake. bojack was never going to even marry PC never let her officially move in with him, never have a baby with her, never support her outside of his own image and career, and always be drunk. They also had a questionable relationship in regards to work and life and positions of power/manipulation. (PC may have said bojack has mommy issues and uses her but who can help but notice that she takes care of bojack like her own mother. She cares for him and she does love him and she will take care of him. She also did that with her mom and her boyfriend and her siblings until they all left. She doesn’t drop people she loves or breaks it off until they truely leave her and drop her and make that crystal clear that it’s broken.) (the Fox relationship ended because of her miscarriage, her relationship with her mother ended because she decided to follow her dreams not what her mother thought was a perfect opportunity decided for her, and she left bojack because he told her it was over over that he didn’t need her want her or wanted to be intimate with her that he was done at a time when he knew it would impact her entire life. Each time these relationships end she starts from the ground up building off her last ideas. From a shared bedroom to a fancy house to a shared bedroom to Hollywood to staying in that apartment for so many years while also seeing bojack to getting a better job new apartment then seeing Ralph’s home then her apartment then living with Jonah in their shared home. ) - if you purely look at lineage success and business/wealth status bojack 17 would have been rich and honestly better off then the fox who still had to strive for academic success and good grades or face repercussions. (Bojack at the time was a class clown but would isolate at the Sugarmans Estate without parents who were obsessed about how he represented the company/did in school, they neglected him and ignored him. In the Sugarmans estate he only watches tv.) Rabbitowitz drops pc for his own wife who’s having kids. Vincent adult man is a child actor in Hollywood who’s just not an actor at all on screen. - and I think that’s the joke. PC is constantly looking for talent on a stage or for a film or in writing she always looking for the best actor she’s ever seen to recruit and hire. So what is Vincent. He’s a kid playing dress up as an ‘Adult man’ trying to improv his way in real life or through some Guerrilla style method acting. So good and so convincing that everyone sees him as the ‘Adult Man/Mr.Adultman’ they don’t see him as a child doing a performance. Bojack was a child performer and just points at him and states ‘it’s a child in a coat lying to you playing pretend.’ No one else was a child actor nor engaged with child actors : they’re all adults who only interact with other adults. PC doesn’t have any child actors she focuses on Bojack and the other celebs the only one close is Sextina Aquafina was a pop icon not a child actress, ( shes introduced at the age of 16 and ages up through the show, she does music vids and lies - but doesn’t work with PC till she’s 18-20. When you see her on the Whale show she’s a child perceived as the hottest new thing and next superstar icon and that’s not questioned she’s sexualized and perceived as being adult enough to outcompete 30 year old last season sensationalist Sarah Lynn and makes people question who even is Sarah Lynn anymore? Is she relevant? not really with a Ryan Seacrest type. - that was done with 0 eye blinks. Aquafina is good at her performance as a child pretending to be adult enough to have a major career and role in mass marketing/Cultural relevance and finances/sex appeal…and have other adults see her or treat her as an adult/in adult roles/in adult positions/a buisness competitor or negotiation… and the rare few that would look at her and say that’s a kid. Sarah Lynn thinks Aquafina is younger then her a child and better then her and will make her look old to other people career wise. With Garfield she’s obsessed about her age/lack of youth and being perceived as the perfect sexy hot young attractive thing. Later on Todd’s runway and movie star GF plays this same Hollywood pretty girl role and fully embraces every second of it on a corporate level almost robotically. There’s always been that issue of age perception reality and acting in Hollywoo and how it affects people on the stage vs irl day to day… PC is so in-love with the performance and the character of the ‘AdultMan’ tm nonliscened unscripted that she doesn’t see through to the actual actor: she only accepts the performance. And I think it has to do with her meeting Vincent off set just out on a Tuesday wherever. She wasn’t expecting to meet an actor she was expecting to meet someone honest and real/truthful to her. But she finds an actor in a costume who pretends to be a character during normal off hours. Vincent is playing a game of imagination and ‘life of AdultMan’ while living in Hollywood as a random child. It’s not for a role.. he’s just doing that when he’s not at home with his mom. Being ‘best kid Vincent!’ PC let’s tod live with her in her apartment making it similar to when she was living with her mother HOWEVER Todd is an Angel who is not only nice to PC but helps her and generally positively affects her life. Mother/roomate/living with another human trauma solved. Todd doesn’t have to be babied and the apartment only once was a dentist office for clowns. Ralph had rich people problems like her first bf but atleast someone who was willing to be nice to her and support her. However she still realized the same things with Ralph as she did Fox: that lifestyle and marrying into wealth wasn’t her achieving her dreams. When she was with Fox or Ralph all she wanted was to have a baby with them, and the 3 of them be happy in their own home together : Ralph and Fox were hoping that she would join their family not that they become part of hers. Her and Ralph and have back and forth and disagreements. She breaks it off they get back together she breaks it off because she realizes it’s not fulfilling her life goals to be with Ralph. She realizes her work/life balance and how she knows she can care for someone else and baby them and love them and watch them be successful or just be happy. But she needs someone who sees her visions and supports her fully not wants her to constantly settle or agree with him or agree to disagree. She needed someone to listen to her. Judah is perfection and is exactly the person princess Carolyn needed to meet to fall in love. Princess Carolyn does fire him because he does go behind her back- not believing in her vision and trying to make a decision for her without telling her. She eventually listens to his song and his singing and she’s quiet and they embrace the moment. They both can listen to eachother and hear eachother out and see each others ideas or ways of thinking and plan for eachother or come to an understanding. They have a lot of harmony together, when working or in life after work ends. Usually she’s still at the office if it’s her birthday a day off or anything. But with Judah he will be with her after work ends in the office and they can sit together and instead of looking out the window and listening to her phone or alarms or something else, she’s with someone who with share the space with her and then let there be space and peace to just relax and enjoy the moment. Her most vulnerable moments in the office alone was made into non work moment and enjoyable. He can provide that comfort and support anywhere but she got someone who would be there for her wherever she was.

PC is my favorite character in bojack as I can relate with putting up with shitty treatment in a lot of friendships and trying to put out fires and feeling under appreciated. I later in my life was able to dump friends who weren’t putting in effort in our friendship and now surround myself with friends who can support me but are also greatful and tell me so when I help out. I really resonate with her story and love the journey she goes on.

i wish we'd seen more of Judah but i love the little glimpses of his world we get. one of my favourite moments in the last season is when Judah's bandmate out-autism's him at their concert. "is everyone from your office here?" Judah sighs: "not everyone..." bandmate rolls her eyes: "obviously i was speaking figuratively, judah."

I love all of the analysis in this video, defo the best part, but I think my favourite part of your Bojack series as a whole is how you handle people like Character Actress Margo Martindale and Vincent Adultman. It's just refreshing to see people handle these very serious people with the seriousness they deserve.
