BoJack’s Turning Point | “A Horse Walks Into a Rehab” Explained

A Horse Walks Into a Rehab is one of the most important episodes of BoJack Horseman, not just for the series, but for the character. After the massive downer ending of season 5, and BoJack’s subsequent check-in to rehab, we actually get to see the fruits of BoJack’s rehabilitation. But more importantly, how BoJack's success in rehab doesn’t necessarily mean he’s putting in the work on himself that actually needs to be done. But through struggle, hardship, and one wild evening across LA, BoJack starts to recognize that he can’t just go through the motions, he has to put in the work.

Something I have always thought is that his "first drink" as a young child doesn't look like a first drink to me. He sneaks in, he knows what the situation is, he takes a gulp from vodka and doesn't cough or splutter at all despite his age.... This feels like a regular occurrence after the many parties they do.

I think this plays into the point he makes too, that Bojack doesn't remember his first drink. That final scene of him drinking ends with the "film" burning away to indicate him burning away his memories. This likely was a recovered lost memory for Bojack, but who knows how many burnt memories are lost forever due to him drinking at a very young age.

@@impulsivepessimist Also the fact that there is a record still playing. One side of a record album is between 15 and 30 minutes. The party is died down and everyone else is gone. So either the last ones to leave the party put on the music or one of Bojacks parents did. If it was one of his parents then they were awake 15 minutes prior. Bojack was probably waiting in his room waiting for this moment, and it's happened enough times that he knows that music doesn't need to stop before it is "safe" to come out.

You know some people don't believe that New Year's party was the first time he drunk. He's around 5 or 6 and took three gulps of straight vodka without even flinching, as if he was used to it. I have a theory about that, you know that old trick people used to do where they put alcohol on a baby's gums to stop the irritation? Then that flashback of Beatric desperately trying to get baby Bojack to stop crying? I wonder if Beatrice at some point had a little help to stop the crying.

people used to deadass give their infants booze back in the day to make them stop crying. i’ve heard of it happening as late as the 1970s, and bojack was born in the 1960s.

I just realized that “Horse Therapy” Is an incredibly subtle form of foreshadowing. They call it “Horse Therapy” when it’s usually referred to as Talk Therapy, but later on in the season we learn that “Horse” Therapy is exactly what Bojack needs since he has a subconscious aversion to other horses!

Hang on I just realized something, something that most people don't realize watching this episode. Bojack shames that girl for being in rehab multiple times and says that if you have to do it more than once then it's a sign you're a lost cause, but going over all those flashbacks just makes me realize that this isn't bojack's first relapse. He's done it again, and again, and again, it makes me wonder if that's why he's taking so long to go to rehab. Like he's tried to stop but relapse so many times that he just didn't care anymore as he got older until everything that happened.

Wow nice catch! That does seem plausible and perhaps why he already looks bored of doing it. Sarah Lynn was on that picture wall at the rehab and she was sober for a while before they went on that binge together. There’s been proof around him that rehab can work but maybe that’s why he’s so bitter about it, because he’s done it before and doesn’t believe it can work for him.

Good catch. His hypocrisy, self-righteousness, and projection are often palpable. Like when he shamed Diane for "living in a mansion her husband paid for and tweeting for a living" while he was willing to accept an Oscar for a film he was deepfaked/edited into instead of actually starring in it.

I never thought Bojack's "first drink" when he's four or five was actually his first. He's takes such a big swig, and no coughing, choking or digust. He's definitely drank before, and he most definitely doesn't know when his real first drink was.

I wonder if Bojack has fetal alcohol syndrome (for anyone that doesn’t know this condition is a potential result that happens when the mother drinks during the pregnancy and sometimes it makes the child born into alcoholism but I’m not sure if women were discouraged from drinking during pregnancy in the 60s the decade Bojack was born. I know this because I took a psychology class last year before graduating from high school and I plan on taking classes with child psychology and make a career working with children)

I think he just drank it to be like his parents - mostly his mum - hence why he cuddles up to her after he took a swig. Not sure if it was because of fetal alcohol syndrome especially since for a period in his 20’s he wasn’t drinking at all

Same for me, unfortunately when I saw the show I recognized a lot of the toxic traits the characters displayed were present in me too. Thankfully, the show was a bit of a wake up call for me, and I went back to therapy. It’s been 4 years now and I’m far from where I want to be, but I’m a completely different person from who I was and I’m better off for it. So are those around me.

To me the point of the episode is that his earliest memory of drinking is at the new years party, where he cuddles up with his mother, is that he doesn't look like he's trying alcohol for the first time, he would have had a reaction. Rather it seems to me like he genuinely doesn't even remember the first time he drank. Alcohol has always been his escape from his anxiety and allowed him to form the connections with the people in his life that he's always wanted, starting with his parents.

I think the reason Bojack was so shaken when he learned about Jameson's baby is because it shifted his perspective about the whole situation. Up to that moment he was relating to her as a difficult child, an addict, a girl who wouldn't help herself - someone like him. When he learns that she is a mother he probably starts relating even deeply to her child, due to his own experience with alcoholic parents. He probably thought that Jameson's baby could be the next to take a sip of vodka before cuddling up into his mother's lap - which yes, totally looks like a habit little Bojack developed to get a shred of a connection with Beatrice and Butterscotch, to be with his family - even though it was only to drown together. To me the main reason why BoJack actually began taking the accountability was the fact Jameson was a mom, as we know Beatrice wasn't the greatest mother but the fact that she was drunk who couldn't stand BoJack and so seeing Jameson try to love her child even with all of her issues made something in him feel that made him want to take accountability.

I have this problem where I compulsively watch this show, start to finish. I've done it now, probably between 15 and 20 times, while working on projects. Despite this, you still manage to blow my mind with Bojack saying he'll have to lie to everybody about Jameson escaping, and her "getting fat" junior year when she was actually pregnant. So many details to this show--don't stop making these reviews, there's so much every time.

I love this episode! And anything with interesting chronological storytelling. One detail I saw someone point out about the Jameson reveal is that it changed who Bojack projected onto. Before, he helped her escape and lashes out on her dad's memorabilia because he thought her father was neglecting her. But after the truth about her baby comes out, he realizes Jameson is a broken alcoholic neglecting her own child due to an inability to confront her issues -- like BoJack's own mother.

Bojack will always have a special place in my heart, despite how controversial and misunderstood his character is. He's the deepest, most realistic depiction of addiction, mental illness and trauma I've ever seen. Ofc he isn't a representation for all people, and I do worry that his extreme behavior and personal flaws contribute to the negative way society sees addicts and the mentally ill, but despite the flaws, Bojack Horsman is a great show and a great character. It's such an accurate depiction of the trauma addicts usually have, the constant guilt and self-hate, the conflict and the desperation. The ending of the show ended up being kinda melancholic and vague, but I'd like to think that Bojack did change and grow, and got his happy ending. Because if Bojack can do it, so can anyone else.

I think that as these things become more discussed, they sort of often become more sugar coated. Like, there are consequences to being an addict, and to being mentally ill. As someone who is in an intensive outpatient treatment program right now, because I was cut off from all my friends for one particular bad coping mechanism I engaged in, it's true. We hurt people, but we don't mean to. I think a lot of what this show makes me think about is forgiveness in the face of that. Or the lack thereof. His relationships are stepping into the line of fire, and we ask ourselves is it for better or for worse? Would they be better off having not been in his life? But mental illness doesn't exist in a vacuum, and support networks are an important part of healing and recovery.. but then do we need our loved ones as much as we think we do or is it better to isolate until we're.. healed? Fixed? I'm not sure. God I miss everyone.

The thing I love most about Bojack is that he never gets away with stuff. Every action has consequences. I think in terms of portrayal of addiction and impulsive behavior it's actually a very important lesson to communicate that not nearly enough media presents. "Oh, he's a dark troubled protagonist who doesn't always do the right thing." Does he have to deal with the results of his bad choices days, weeks, months, years later? Do things that he does in the show actually traumatize him and form a foundation for him healing, or is it just some vague backstory (or worse, an excuse to let them be a bad person)? Bojack's conceit of an actor adapting from a sitcom world where everything works out automatically to real life is, in a sense, a commentary on this formula, and I have massive respect for it.

I think Bojack in rehab is a good example of a person working therapy, not working WITH therapy. He's not really using it to help himself and breakdown the barriers and trauma he went through, he's playing at it. Kinda like putting on a performance, which a lot of people do in real life. They go through the motions and say and do things the therapist/therapy would want them to do.

The really sad part about the first time he drinks? Is he's cuddled up next to his passed out mom. It's the only time he's actually that close to her physically and he knows it. He knows he's not going to be able to be that close to her and feel safe when she's conscious and sober. It's a heartbreaking version of bittersweet.

He downs it a lot better than you'd expect any kid to, and he seems to know exactly how it's going to effect him as he does it. I've occasionally commented and I've posted snippets of my life in other parts of social media but I guess to anyone it might relate: The ending of the season before this was the final push to get me to try therapy. I spent the whole show relating to Bojack, while also knowing "I'm not as bad as him." Then the season ended with him going to rehab. I struggled cuz if I am not as bad as him, then what's my excuse to not also try and get help? Both myself and Bojack didn't know if rehab/therapy would do anything but I just saw him head towards it so...yeah. I was in therapy when this episode/first half of the season dropped, and it's honestly a surreal experience to watch him go through the motions. It's honestly still wild to me now, even just looking back on this. I did A LOT of what Bojack did in how he deflects to how he thrives, but I did not even realize I was doing it at the time. I think that's why this show will always be my comfort show. I get reminded to why I do some things now, or I remember the headspace I was in before and notice an obvious difference to who I am now, among many other things.

I went to rehab when I was about to turn 20 after two failed suicide attempts and being diagnosed with BPD and alcoholism. The same point you made at the start of the video is what happened to me when I talked to my doctors: “you’re not doing what it takes to be better”. That’s when my brain finally made the connection and started to *really* change for the better. Earlier in the show, someone said this quote: “it gets easier. But you have to do it everyday, that’s the hard part”. It does get easier. But you need to put effort into your own recovery and happiness

As someone with an addictive personality, i struggle with this a lot. That part of being good at the system and that itself not helping is so true cause in my experience it was like that. I had to help myself more. But I also tend to move from one addiction to another as rehab which makes me relapse a lot. To rehab can be easy but it's being constant is such a struggle for me.

Just rewatched the series, I got to this one and realized something about his first drink and why he cant talk about it. It could be obvious, but I was always distracted by how calm his parents were and how young he was and how sad it was. I just realized that real addiction came from that moment when he was finally able to be held by his mother and feel comfortable and loved.

Posting this comment before finishing the video, right after you talk about BoJack being pressured into drinking "for the first time" every time: what if, BoJack keeps believing that "nobody made him drink" because he does not want to admit to himself that he gave into peer pressure, in a sense??

Something I always understood is that every time Bojack had his “first drink” he’s always asked if he wants a drink or people just give him one, but during his actual first time, no one offers it to him, he decided to drink. It’s you.

What's such a bummer it's that before Bojack starts Horsing Around, he insists he doesn't drink. That probably means the party where what horroble to Katie at ones point, was something he regretted. Something that caused him to stop drinking for a time. It did matter to him at one point. Sad stuff!

I’ve been a fan of your content for several years, especially your BoJack content, but this one hit really close to home. As a former heroin/opioid addict, and having only started watching BoJack some ten years after I’d beaten my addiction, I remember how fucking furious I would get seeing BoJack have the resources and money to attend a beautiful rehab center, but squander it. To give you an idea of what I mean, when I say as a therapist, “mental health services & rehab are a luxury”, the “rehab” I went to wasn’t even a rehab; it was a city-funded homeless shelter. Yes, they did have “rehab” services, but only if you were willing to submit to their extreme religious indoctrination & views. It was literally a cult. It gets worse; the man in charge of the women’s rehab and counseling programs was a known sexual predator, and groomed and took advantage of myself and others. Even when I finally outed him to the head of the Mission, and it became this big scandal, I wasn’t even allowed to talk about how much it fucked me up in “therapy”, they’d just tell me to get over it. So when I say I was violently disgusted at Bojack having the “American Dream” rehab, while literally only about 1% of us can afford that level of treatment which is typically paid out of pocket. If they REALLY wanted to make the show more interesting, they would have held his rehab arc when he lost all of his money, forcing him to go to one of these inner city “rehabs” just to see the disgusting differences in between when you can afford to get help vs when you literally can’t.
