Silvius Leopold Weiss - " Fantasie" Octava Bassa Piano Steingraeber B192

After uploading the previous version of this Fantasie for guitar ( • Silvius Leopold Weiss ... ) an auditor remarked that guitar scores are usually written an octave higher than actually played. So here is a second version played an octave lower. I hope you will like it.

very cool, actually im not sure which version i like better, they are both great in their own right. I totally agree with you that in the end it doesnt matter what pitch or on what instrument it is played on as long as it is played with care by a good musician. I like the idea of playing guitar or lute music on the piano tho, you should play some more of it. Our repertoire is more interesting than people think ;)

Thank you for your very kind comment. Yes I agree that there is very interesting repertoire for many instruments and it is often unknown by other musicians. Probably from this point of view pianists are the worst because the piano repertoire is already so big that it seems useless to look somewhere else. With this piece I am now convinced that all musicians should have an opened mind :-)

Now we have a problem. It's hard to tell if I like one version because of how the piano sounds, or the other because it tightly reproduces the guitar frequencies. Haha Although the first version may not be adjusted to the original score, I think that in the high passages it transmits the effort and passion of the guitarist. Maybe we need a third video where only the left hand is an octave down. It's just a joke. Thank you for sharing your talents with us.

Actually my opinion is very close to yours. Yes because of the longer sustain of the piano in the lower register range I think that the piece sounds much better in the second version. But I also agree that it sounds closer to the guitar when it is played one octave higher. This is probably due to the higher content of harmonics of the guitar compared to the piano. The only point I disagree with is that I do not think we have a problem: we can like both for different reasons! This is to put at the credit of the genius of the composer, whatever the instrument or the height this piece always sounds great! Finally I was thinking of a third version in the spirit of your proposal :playing at the height of the first version and adding a lower octave at the left hand. This now becomes a transcription. It was not the original idea but why not. Let me know if you would like me to try! Cheers.

@@Pleyel204 This has always crossed my mind in regards to the "which octave to play it in", a good compromise would be to transpose Weiss's version ( your octave down version ) up a 4th or 5th, that's my five cents, I've actually done this with a Bach piece.
