I will never understand how the 40 grain black powder load with a 255 grain hard cast bullet gets so underrated. 40 grains of 777 with a 255 grain bullet out of a 4 5/8 inch barrel is moving a little over 1000 fps. That will put down anything that needs to be put down. In one of my kirst converted revolvers or my open top you have a light easy packable gun that will do what ever needs to be done. That load is less pressure than the smokless loads , less recoil too. It can be shot in the Italian saa clones and open tops all day long. The only down side is cleaning really. My other favorite is my ruger bisley 44 magnum with a 3 3/4 inch barrel. I will say you are really getting me interested in the 41 mag may start looking for a S&W in 41 mag like yours.

I'm 60 years old and got my first .44 Magnum when I was 12 in the form of a S&W Model 29 4-screw with a 4" barrel. I killed my first handgunned deer at 13. You could say I was raised with a .44 Magnum. Yep...250 Keith over 22 grs. of 2400 and I wore out 3 4" 29's doing so. Since that time I've used and killed game with a handgun from .22LR to .500 Linebaugh Maximum. I agree the .45 Colt is an excellent killer on game, but I've come to learn that once you shoot through your game and let air out and air in...its all just a mute point, but I agree a heavy cast bullet with a wide meplat can't be denied in regard to terminal performance. I carry a handgun every day and these days when bumming around my wooded property surrounded by more woods...I carry a 4" S&W Model 629...an older pinned and recessed sixgun. It's compact enough and delivers good power. When carried in a good belt rig its comfortable for hours on end. I'll admit these days I don't beat my hands and body up with extreme heavy loads as they're simply just not necessary for my uses. Been there...done that!😂 God bless....

Really enjoyed reading your post. Can you give details on the .500 Maximum? I'm a huge Linebaugh fan and can't imagine getting to shoot a .500 maximum or .475 maximum for that matter.
@Briarpatchblades8 ай бұрын
The .500 Linebaugh Long is a 1.6" length case rather than the 1.4" .500 Linebaugh. The guns were built on Ruger .357 Maximum frames with a custom 5-shot cylinder. When shot to potential they are absolutely brutal in regard to recoil. I've broken the middle finger on my right hand, not once, but twice! Yep! A little slow on the uptake I'll agree!! Too much sugar for a dime as my daddy used to say! Thousands upon thousands of rounds fired from John's custom revolver over the years in .45 Colt to .500 Long...he was a good friend...I sure do miss him for sure!

I've read both John's articles and John Taffins as well. Did you ever shoot the .475 maximum? I sure wish I'd bit the bullet and had John build a gun. Making my day talking to you. I've got Max Prasaacs book on big bore revolvers and refer to it regularly.
@timt80298 ай бұрын
@chucksmith8382 If I may ask, did you shoot the guns that John owned or did you have some yourself? If you had to rate the recoil of all 5 of John's cartridges, how would you rate them?
@Briarpatchblades8 ай бұрын
I'm referring to guns that I personally owned. However, I have been fortunate enough to handle and shoot lots of others owned by people over the years. I would rate the .500 Long to be the recoil champion in my experiences. The .475 Long, which I've never owned but have shot does have the quickest recoil response by a little over the the .500 Long. I've been fortunate to know and shoot with some of the pioneers and promoters of big bore handguns in my lifetime and have learned a great deal from them all. I'm 60 years old now and don't really shoot the big guns much any longer...been there...done that. I carry a handgun each day and its usually a 4" .44 Magnum...it does what I need it to do and I've never felt undergunned.

Seldom had any of them stop in an animal, and ive been really impressed with the caliber. Gt bullets cast a 250 grain hp that has done very well for me. Ive used a 45 acp to take a couple deer and a couple hogs. A 200 grain h&g style swc loaded with enough unique powder to get a little over 1000 fps. A few years back I snagged an Elmer Keith Special, i.e., a 4 5/8" Ruger Flattop 44 Special, and it is the sweetest shooting SA pistol I own. What I've always wanted is a SAA 44 Special with a 4" barrel. In his handgun book Elmer mentioned one such custom conversion a gunsmith friend made. It seemed like an interesting setup because the shortened ejector rod housing should still be able to eject an empty case (something the 3 1/2" Model P Jr won't do). Speaking of 4", this year I picked up an old S&W Model 58 41 Magnum. It looks like a heavy barrel S&W Model 10 on steroids but kicks a lot harder. It technically has less recoil than a Model 29 44 Magnum, but I honestly can't feel the difference. I suppose it depends on the load chosen.

I have big hands but I need a grip adapter with that one. Nice collection of shootin irons, all good choices . Y'all have a Merry Christmas!

When I got this N prefix, 1980-shipped Model 57, it had a Hogue Super Ugly-style Monogrip on it (which I quickly gave away). A fellow KZbinr (A.R. American) sent me a new pair of Alatamont bonded ivory panels for it and I was instantly hooked on the look and the lines. What I wasn't crazy about was the fit to my L-XL hands. I bought that BK hoping it would help, having never handled one so adorned, and without a doubt it greatly improved the feel and fit to my hand. I will own BK adapters for other guns, in the future. Thanks, and Merry Christmas to you/ ya'll, as well !

Im honestly a packen Rifle kind of guy. You will see me with a Rifle more often than a handgun. H&R handi Rifle in 357mag has solved all the issues I have had so far in my new Home, Arkansas. I have several barrels fitted to that action but the 357mag gets the most use. And its cheap to shoot. I am messing with a TC encore pistol in 357mag and 30-30win. I could carry that in a good chest rig.

I’m with you mr. plowboysghost, when I was young pistols were revolvers absolutely. Pistoleros didn’t carry twin Glocks in the old west…lol. To me a 4” - 4 3/4” is pretty much optimal for carry, but for better hunting 5.5” or more seems best. For carry only I have at times wanted the .45 Colt 3.75” with or without Bisley Lipsey’s SA or the same in .44 Mag so you could run .44 Spl for self defense. Yes Garrett Cartridges RHO, thanks for bringing those up sir! Don’t worry plowboysghost sir, I bought a Harley Davidson FLRT Freewheeler 3 wheeler in Performance Orange and still wanting another Blackhawk up here in Montana lol….rode it today! Hey man! I have the Ruger Redhawk 4.2", in .45 Colt! It's an absolute tank, yes. I got it just because it can handle all the hot loads. I have put some rounds through this that would for sure blow up other guns. It runs perfectly, and is a joy to shoot. I haven't hunted with a revolver yet, but that's what I'm working on. As far as auto cartridges in revolvers....Well, I have a Ruger GP100 in 10mm. I have decided that 10mm is the only one worthy of going in a revolver. For me, anyway. I like to shoot it, and I do have an Auto pistol in 10mm, and both will shoot up all my left over .40 S&W, back when that's all I had. Thanks for the vids, I like your pistol talks, and look forward to what else you have to share!

Just found your channel and love it. I have many Ruger single action revolvers and I am going to pick up a Pietta Californian in 9mm for cheaper shooting ( I know you don’t like auto calibers in revolvers, lol). Keep up the content, it sure beats another Glock video.

A 41 mag like yours is on my list but I think i would rather have the fixed sight version. I have been really enjoying my 1917 right now while working outside. I normally carry a 4 &5/8 usfa rodeo in 38 special it is a heavy dude but you quickly forget about it. That single action design is really perfect for every day hard use. It keeps the dirt out of the important bits. It always runs. Hangs in the hand like it was born there. I can operate it with heavy work gloves on. Like everything from that era it's designed for working with never a wasted movement purpose built for efficiency. My flattop 44 special is a 4&5/8 and a great packing gun and will handle any load I'd want to use with ease. N frames are my favorite Smith and Wesson. I love them all for different reasons but single action army will always reign Supreme

For my packing pistols it would have to be single action from my choices as the only da I have are SRH’s. I will say the SRH revolvers might be some of the best hunting revolvers ever made but not sure they are what I would call a PPP. I have a 4 3/4” flattop 44 special that might be about perfect, as you can load up a Keith load and it matches white box 44 mag. The other one is a BFR 5” in 500L because it is just an awesome round that is only about 7 ounces heavier than the flattop ( both unloaded). I finally bought a Colt clone 5.5” but have yet to shoot it but I will say I can definitely see the appeal of one and they are good to go up to tier 2 loads so I will hopefully be getting acquainted with it this coming year.

Plowboys Ghost Ruger makes a Ruger Redhawk convertible 45 Colt and 45 ACP with a 1 in 16 barrel twist 4 inch long barrel. Garrett Cartridges of Texas has a special load for that revolver using a 405 grain hard-cast gas check bullet since it uses a 1 in 16 barrel twist. That would be a Packing Pistol too.

I too like the Blackhawk in 41 and 44 mag. The 44 Special is a great round but in many states it is not legal for large game since the case is too short. I think I might actually go for the 5" Schofield in 45 LC. It covers it all and for defense as using 45 S&W brass it is just as quick to reload as an N frame. For a DA it is just as difficult. Again the Model 57 is a great piece as is the model 29. The Redhawk is clunkier and bulkier but it is hard to come up with a more rugged DA revolver. Of course all of this is cost no object. Truth be told I would probably settle for one of the new Rossi 4" 357s since I am not in Griz country.

Carrying a heavier gun is not that big a deal but it does take a bit of getting used to (it's more the size). The new aluminum/scandium guns are marvels but they have their limitations (bullets pulling out of their cases and of course recoil). Having carried fairly large defensive guns (concealed) it is possible but requires much more planning than pocket guns. I'm not overly concerned with weight as I am size. For reference I've carried (concealed) full sized 1911s and .357 revolvers before even in formal business attire. Is it a PITA....yes. Can it be done....yes. Good song belt and the right pants help.
