10mm Auto has been my edc cartridge of choice for over 10 years and it's probably the best semi auto cartridge out there for those looking for .357 Magnum power in an autoloader. However, you'd never see me in the back country of Montana, Idaho, or Wyoming packing a 10mm. That's strictly large caliber 454 Casull, 475 and 500 Linebaugh revolver territory. I don't get these guys saying a 10mm is just as effective or better on dangerous game than the above mentioned calibers. I've been in contact with pissed off brown bear before on several occasions and was glad I was packing a 500 Linebaugh with 460 grain hardcast and not my Kimber Eclipse or Glock 20. These are great pistols but common sense tells me its not their place. Great video!

Sir great discussion. I've been a .41 mag user since the early 80's. This round never ceases to amaze me with its power and accuracy. I've always hand-loaded it for my revolvers. Back in the late 80's, I was pheasant hunting with my Dad and brothers and we spotted a coyote on a nearby hillside that was focused on some other hunters off in the distance and didn't notice us. We watched him come down the hill towards us and when he was about 200 yards away as he trotted up against a fence, he paused and I touched off a round. Hit him square in the chest at a stepped off 190 yards with my .41 mag 6.5" Ruger Blackhawk. That shot still comes up at family get togethers even today. In terms of performance on large midwest whitetails with hard cast 210 gr flat nose bullets, they either go down at the shot or stumble off 5-10 yards, then go down. I only know one other shooter friend who uses .41mag (Redhawk) and like me, its his favorite round. To be fare, I own a number of nice .44 mag revolvers and 10mm autos. However, the .41mag has been my favorite "go to" outdoors/hunting handgun and always will be.

Great points! Close to 30 years ago, I discussed this with my late uncle and he told me it was laughable to compare the two. I can setup cinder blocks and show people that a 45 Auto can run with 10mm in terms of damage - yeah, I'm a fudd I guess! I can't do that with a 41 mag. I know of no 10mm that can sling 265 grain pills...and I love 10mm, but I don't understand how it became equivalent with 41 mag. Only in Winchester Silvertips - what a laugh!

I absolutely agree with you! The 10mm, as loaded in the 1980s at least, was pushed, and pushed hard as THE semi auto pistol version of the .41 Magnum. LTC Cooper had a lot to do with that push. LTC Cooper had long been a proponent of the .45ACP as THE best of the best self-defense round on the planet when suddenly he made a hard left-hand turn and began championing the 10mm in that role. Just about the same time he started pushing the Bren Ten as THE bestist handgun in the world. I've always wondered how much stock he owned in the company. I'm not throwing off on him, but even way back then I wondered. It took a little while, but eventually the 10mm became the darling of a number of gun magazine writers who pushed it as a round for all things except maybe male pattern baldness and athlete's foot. The whole problem, and it nearly killed off the 10mm as a viable round for use in handguns, was that converting your beloved Gold Cup or even Dads old WWII 1911A1 to 10mm was generally a bad idea. Frames AND slides cracked, and more than a few 1911 and 1935 conversions simply self-destructed under the battering of full powered 10mm ammo. I heard some folks even suffered personal injury when their converted 10mms blew up in their hands. John Browing NEVER meant for his two most famous handguns to operate under such pressures in the first place. Eventually Colt's came out with a 1911 that could, mostly, handle the pressures as did Smith & Wesson with the S&Ws probably being the better choice if full powered 10mm was going to be a regular thing. Anybody out there know if Ruger ever went down the 10mm rabbit hole with the "P" series of pistols? If they did, I never saw or heard of such a thing. Oddly enough, the full powered 10mm loading was what many folks in Law Enforcement, me included, had started calling the answer to our requests for a ".41 Special" load suitable for use in duty revolvers. Along comes the FBI and that agency's short lived love affair with the .40 caliber in general and a return to the 9 Minimal for its agents.....Followed by a LOT of other federal, state, and local agencies.....Because the FBI said it was the bestist. So, if the FBI and all those other Law Enforcement types and the US Military said it, it had to be true which has led a bunch of civilians to believe the 9 Minimal is the bestist cartridge ever. If I were to purchase a revolver in .41 Magnum in 2024, I would have to invest in a set of dies and tinker around until I found that ".41 Special" sweet spot for daily carry while never feeling even slightly under gunned with the magnum loadings for the .41. Well, I've vented my spleen in yet another of your video comment sections, and I feel better now. Excellent video as usual and once again a truthful video on a subject near and dear to my heart! I'm an old timer - 60 years old now. The Ruger P Series was one of my favorite house, truck and carry guns in the 90's- early 2000's. I owned several of them. 9's and 45's, and one 40sw. I was always wishing and waiting for a 10mm Model, but to my knowledge, they never had one. The P90-45 auto was my favorite. I carried that model, in stainless steel, a lot. It was that model I pulled in response to a crazy, drugged out neighbor running into my driveway one afternoon when I was getting home from work. He was hollering that he was going to kill me- all the way from his porch to my truck. I had put a stop to him beating his wife in his front yard a day before. Anyway, I had the Ruger 45 auto in my hand as he went to open my passenger side door. The sight of that big ole stainless gun instantly changed his mind about jumping in my truck and killing me. Back in the day, most gun "experts" didn't like the Ruger P Series guns. "To heavy"-"Bad triggers"- etc, etc. You could pick them up used, like new, for $200-$250. When the polymer frame P95-9mm 1st came out, I bought a new one for $275. In my experience, all of the P Series guns were very,very reliable. I've honestly never seen one malfunction. I always have thought that the military should have selected the P89-9mm.

@@shadowwolf9503 When the small-town PD that I eventually retired from went looking for a semi auto pistol to replace our old Smiths (I was the only Officer in the department that was issued a Colt's Trooper MkIII and I miss that great revolver to this day!). We tested, and tested HARD, several major brands of semi auto pistols and in the end, we came to the conclusion that Ruger P-90s in .45ACP checked all the boxes for us and the P-90 became the first issue semi auto for that department though our chief and department investigator chose to go with P-94s in .40S&W for their service weapons. Not one of our P-90s ever failed in any way shape or form and our research on the pistols AND the best caliber led several departments to follow suit with pistols in that caliber. But then we fired a LOT of pistols in three calibers, at a LOT of different types of targets to include dead hogs before deciding that the .45ACP and the selected 230grn Federal H-S round was the way to go.

For me, it’s in my “warm n fuzzy comfort zone”(whatever that is…). But there’s times when I’m lazy and brave and strap on my skinny 10mm 1911 instead. But I’m under ZERO delusions about comparing the two.

I consider Mr Fairburn a very knowledgeable guy, and I watch every video he puts out, but there is no way in hell that a 10mm comes close to approaching .41 mag energy levels. 10 mms are definitely stout, but .41 mag is in a completely different class and is a much "classier" cartridge to boot. Excellent commemtary Plowboy, im always glad to hear your point of view, and it usually mirrors mine ha. Take care man. Still totin' my Colt 3rd Gen, and it's still doing the job most admirably.

What I’ve garnered from watching Mr. Fairburn is he simply has a preference for auto loaders. He placed the 38 Super as being more powerful than 357 magnum, which is patently absurd. All things being even, which they aren’t, he will praise the auto loader and chide the revolver round.

Yep, mr. plowboysghost I sincerely appreciate you reminding us of the Taylor Knockout Value as so many are hung up on on just the energy and capacity. Marksmanship and practice is work and a 10mm auto is not a shortcut to being prepared. And ammo/load makes the other key contribution and appreciate keeping the ever versatile .45 Colt in the right revolver capable of those higher loads and pressures in the discussion. 10mm and 357 are pretty much dead even on power. The 10mm was created specifically for that purpose; to be the equal of 357 mag in an autoloader. Standard factory 10mm is not loaded anywhere near the upper end of its power level though. You would have to buy from one of the boutique ammo manufacturers or hand load to get it to full power. Also, I think Tim at the Military Arms Channel was comparing 9mm to 357 out of a snub nose revolver if I remember correctly. I think his point was the 9mm was fairly close to 357 out of a 2 inch barrel without having the severe recoil. That has been disputed by others, but I don't think he was trying to claim that 9mm and 357 were otherwise equivalent.

Not even close. Buffalo Bore loads a .357 that generates 900 ft-lbs with a 180 grain bullet. Show me a 10mm that can do the same and that won’t grendade the pistol fired in it. 10mm is the most overhyped cartridge for handguns there is. It produces NOTHING close to the .41 or .44, and doesn’t even best the mild .357.

As a consumer we have to look at the original intent and design of these cartridges. 10mm was pioneered by Jeff Cooper as a self defense round against bad guys. Before all this PC 🐂💩…. All the handgun authors admitted that 40 was invented because female fbi agents complained about 10mm recoil. Fast forward to today and most 10mm ammo is downloaded. 40 S&W was invented at the FBI's request because agents had trouble qualifying and the guns experienced accelerated wear. The FBI felt the 9 mm lacked stopping power after the Miami shootout but the real problem was the 115 grain Winchester Silvertip's lack of penetration. Later on as better bullets became available, the FBI went back to the 9 mm.

You are right about the 41 Magnum. I first started in 1972 after I got out of the Army with a 4 inch blued S&W M29. The "Dirty Harry" fad was in full force and the 4 incher was the only one really available. The Model 57 was ignored and could be readily found for list or a bit less. I saw a 6 inch blued M57 and bought it. I used it in a few combat matches with a 1000fps lead load and did fairly well against the 45 Auto 1911s. This was the 70ties. One thing I noticed about the 41 Mag was the lesser recoil. I could handload the 41 to the same ft lbs energy as the 44 Magnum and the recoil seemed a lot less. I had the same Ruger as you show and people who shot it always said the recoil was no problem. Same With the M29 vs the M57. BTW, Mag-Na-Port will cut the recoil of the single actions a good bit. Well worth the price. Get their action job, too. If I had it to do all over again, I would just use the 41 Magnum and would skip the 44 Magnum. For woods walking today I have a 2.75 inch S&W M69. If it was available in 41 Magnum, I might have bought that instead. We only have black bears here. Had one in my driveway one night. Good video.

I had a friend, who I believe was smart and taught me a lot about hand-gun shooting back in '80's, who was a devout .41mag pistolero! I was.357mag disciple.( partly economic) Life drifted us apart. I still miss him/our range time/talks. We didn't have chrono's/any of the data then that is avaialble now. Even so, I have been happily succesful w/my .357 hunting, and still choose it. The only thing I dislike about the .41mag is ammo UN-availability. And, I don't have the time/space/$$/ or patience to become a MfgReloader. So I will just shuffle happily along.

Im like Kodiak bears weigh 1500 lbs on average, they have a top speed of 35-40 mph. I was like "that's 80,000 ft lbs of impact energy charging you. You dont want to skimp on firepower, you'll prolly eat sh*t."

I have a friend who nearly got taken out running fence line. 260lb boar hog charged him. He was running .300 blackout at the time and it got the job done. I carry and reload a 6” .500 Magnum in a Simply Rugged chest rig. I carry three 5-star speedloders. I reload from mild to wild as I see fit. Hard cast wad cutters and hollow points, all cast by me and gas checked. I stopped fooling with the sub calibers like .44 and .41 years ago

I've shot my Ruger .41 mag Blackhawk revolver since the mid-1980s and got into reloading specifically because of this caliber. Also reload .38-SPL, .357 mag, 9 mm. and .45-ACP. The 10 mm fan boys conveniently overlook the fact that the .41 mag has over 40% more case capacity than does the 10 mm auto round. That gives room in the .41 mag case for a lot of extra powder. As you say, the 10 mm auto is a fine round and is considerably superior to the 9 mm round. But it's still not in the same class as the .41 mag. My heavy loads use a 220 gr JHP bullet at around 1420 fps. While this is not a max round, it is stout and should be able to handle just about any game animal in North America. My mid-loads use a 210 gr JHP bullet at 1200 fps, and my light target loads use a 205 gr cast lead bullet at about 950 fps. No one in their right mind would want to be hit with any of these rounds because even the "light" load still packs a punch. I like the .41 mag a lot because it's flat-shooting and hard-hitting. Best of all, it's the most powerful handgun round I can shoot well. I shoot at a steel target at 110 yards and hit the 12" x 10" target almost every time. The times when I miss are few but entirely due to errors on my part.

Surely, I don't think it can be overstated (for the 10mm fan boys); 10mm is NOT the Grizzly God... Here's my analogy/comparison: 10mm is like 9mm - if a bear were a human (if you know what I mean). Just adequate for bear defense - but nothing above that; multiple shots required (like with 9mm against a human)... So .41 Magnum to a (big; grizzly) bear would be like the equivalent of a properly loaded .357 Magnum (through a 5-6" barrel or longer) to a human. That's a BIG difference! This is my take (hopefully it makes sense)... Some people may take comfort in the capacity of a 10mm semi-auto - but it's nowhere near as powerful, shot-for-shot, as a .41 Magnum revolver. Buffalo Bore, for example, makes a .41 Magnum hard cast bear defense load that generates over 1000 ft lbs of energy - and 10mm isn't even close to that!... Case closed.

I've got many different handguns from 22 up to the 10 mm and the 454 casull and I still find myself reaching for my model 25 Smith and Wesson in the 45 Colt "4 inch barrel with my home rolled ammo I'm not in big bear country so I use the 185 grn gold Dot bullet for personal carry protection if I was going into Bear country I'd find a better bullet than what I use or I'd pack my 44 mag it's a time proven stopper

I’ve lived in Alaska for 30 years, I’ve been packing a 480 for the past 20+ years, 400 gr @1200 fps. My thought is I may only get one shot and I want enough power in that one shot. I know lots of folks that carry 10mm because they want follow up shots. As to Phil, the 9 isn’t his regular carry gun, it was just what he had on him at the time and he didn’t expect to be encountering a bear as he had clients who were fishing. Worth noting when he is guiding bear hunts he carries a 458 win mag rifle.

10 mm is equivalent to the 357 mag and ballistic data shows that plain and clear. The 41 mag's competitor is the 44 mag who won that contest a long time ago, rendering the 41 mag. obsolete. Gun and ammo sales are the evidence.

This reminds me of all the talk about how 9mm is just as good as 40 or 45 acp because of the improved technology. It’s the craziest point to make. Yes, the technology has improved greatly on the 9mm, but the technology didn’t stop with 9mm!!! Every advance that’s been made in bullet technology applies to all calibers. The ammo companies didn’t just improve ballistics for a single round. For example, Hornady doesn’t make their Critical Defense just for 9mm, they have it for every caliber they produce.

Cartridges for automatics must be designed with inherent compromises, you just can’t get around the fact that they have to fit in a magazine that must fit into the handle of the pistol. There is a place for them but folks should quit trying to equate hot 10mm with 41 or 44 mags…heck, should be careful comparing with 357 mag or hot 45 long colt.

The auto guys like accuracy by volume. It makes them look more impressive when they shoot steel fast. I would never prefer an auto.. with my luck, the malfunction bug would get me. No thanks I will take my accuracy with a revolver and a larger diameter projectile over the extra capacity.

And even better common sense based power determiner is what I call power factor. Take caliber times velocity get the result times by .1 you get a usable scale from 0 to 100 let’s say. The simple formula works assuming you are using a bullet Of adequate weight to achieve the penetration required. So you must use a bullet suitable for caliber and the lowest weight that will achieve that penetration is ideal to maximize velocity. That’s the key to power. Example:: 45 colt: .452 x 1000 fps = 452 x .1= Power Factor of 45.0 10mm: .40 x 1350 fps = 540x .1= Power Factor of 54.0 41 Mag: .41 x 1500 fps = 615 x .1= Power Factor of 61.5 Try it on any caliber and you’ll see what I mean. 357 Sig: .355 c 1450fps = 515 x .1 = Power Factor of 51.5 Gives a more realistic comparison. 45 super to 10mm would be a better comparison both semiauto. 41 mag is a great round but since everyone wants semiauto and not revolvers its a shame people limit themselves. 45 colt 44-40 44 mag revolvers get the job done its not always what you carry and how many rounds you have but how good you are and train with what you like.

I’ve had that argument with Mr. Fairburn as well. At least he isn’t a muzzle energy worshipper. I doubt that Aria stuff will get 1500 fps in a revolver, but.41 magnum will easily push a 290 grain cast bullet the 1200 the 10/220 can manage. Zero rounds is more likely in a bear attack than 7 plus. Time for the fan boys to learn to shoot.

Nice vid, and I get it. Shot for shot, 41M beats 10mm every day. Personally, I’m a 45 Colt and 44M guy, but I also see the value of 10mm. Think in terms of cumulative muzzle energy a handgun can contain. If I’m going into the wild, I like a 10 on one hip and a 44 (or hot-loaded 45) on the other. I don’t mind carrying a little extra weight because…muscles. Heavy metal baby. And I’m 58 years old.

To get even close to the 41 magnum, 10mm has to be stretched to the 10mm magnum cartridge, then you have equals. Aria does load the 10mm magnum. Now, good luck finding a pistol to shoot it out of. Aria evens loads a 44 spl, with a TKO of 19, so even the ole lonely 44 spl beats the 10mm.

Personally for me. 45 super gives me better performance than the 10mm and I can use any suitable 45 ACP platform for it. I mean as far as chamber support and recoil spring tuning goes you have to roughly do as much work to get a stock 10mm to shoot super hot 10mm loads safely as you do a 45 to shoot 45 super safely. Yes you gain more ammo in the 10mm but if you already have a 45 it makes more sense to just invest in making it 45 super capable than buying a 10mm. But to your point I think the whole “10mm is equivalent to 41 magnum” comes down to a 10mm is technically 40 caliber so they round up to 41 and just proclaim it’s the equal. From the very first time I saw a video covering 10mm (I believe it was a Military Arms Channel video) I heard that claim and I knew that data was closer to 357 performance than 41 magnum performance.

It doesn't happen often. I have read of a mother bear with 2 cubs attacking a home sted. One of the 1/2 grown cubs attacked. Then the mom then the other cub. The guy had a 30-30. He emptied it twice. So 6 hand gun rds would not be enough.

I Really Like .41. . I also like 10mm , and the two aren't contradictory. The complete , and more accurate , statement was : " ( Normal mainstream ) Full Power 10mm is reasonably similar to Silvertip. 41 Mag . " I have chronograp Ed 10mm cast bullet handloads that I've stopped reporting , because everybody says it's lieing . Yeah , they were " beyond original specification " . But it's not as if that 325 gr .45 Colt loading is within original specs either , but tailored by experienced handloaders , for specific guns . And G29sf with full power 10mm . If it's not the most energy from something that size , while still able to control for rapid fire, then it's darn close to it . [ And for the record , my nest closest contender is Large Frame Vaquero, 3.5 inch .45 Colt , with mid "Ruger Only " loads .

My late Best Friend ( RIP) , and #1 Shooting and Handloading Partner had the 200 yd private range outside his kitchen door , a large loading and casting set up , and the opportunity to do borderline excessive work ups for accuracy and power for his favored guns . And to relevance here , they included 4 5/8 .41 Blackhawk , and Colt Delta Elite . Both guns received through load developments for each , to reach the best possible. And I consulted with him for most of his load development, and chronograph ' Ed many of them myself . ( He lived 2 states away , or else I'd have been at his bench most days . Yes , his " most bestest in his druthers " .41 Mag load with 265gr LBT bullet , exceeded any of his 10mm load developments. BUT , his top 10mm loads with 220 gr cast bullets exceeded mainstream. 41 Mag factory loads . Same kind of thing with "Ruger Level " .45 Colt vs .44 Magnum . I can load Ruger Bisley with heavy cast bullet handloads to exceed mainstream .44 Mag factory loads . But I can also develop heavy cast bullet loads safe in SBH Hunter to exceed what's possible in .45 Blackhawk. So yes , a 10mm with with suitable handloads is Also viable for Bear .

Correct. Ultra-super-hot 10mm might almost touch the most pathetic target .41 loads on a very good day. The best way to think of 10mm is a box-fed .357 magnum. People just don't understand the raw horsepower you can get from a big-bore revolver. The best heavy duty pickup will never ever do the work of a semi. Different tool for a different situation!

The argument for 10mm is IMO ability to shoot accurately, speed/accuracy of follow up shots and capacity. As in trading bullets with people or a 800lbs bear. Taking a bear from a blind or stand with a handgun is a totally different situation than being surprised by an angry bear while hiking.

One of the main things overlooked by those pushing 10mm autos is, as in a couple of recent attacks, that there's too much value being placed in magazine capacity to cover for a lack of cartridge power and marksmanship. Sometimes you don't have time or perfect function to take advantage of a big magazine or a spare magazine. One of these boys (with the 10mm) would likely be dead today if it were just he and his 10mm alone with that bear that only gave him time for one shot.

I have two boxes of 45 Colt that the labels must have fallen off so no idea what they are loaded at and the only thing I have in 45 Colt is a conversion cyl for an 1860 army sooo..

All of them have a place, but people just can’t seem to let them stay in their lane. Some are always touting how awesome marginal calibers are but should I be in harms way due to large animals that want to render me a into a meal or a greasy spot I will definitely take a high TKO round as my protection and leave g to he marginal calibers for social work.
