Personally, I conceal carry so that I don't have to deal with the Karens or the police. But I also like it when others around me are open carrying as the attention is on them instead of me. I attend a potluck in a park once a month here in Murderapolis. At least two people open carry, and at least 3 others, including myself, conceal carry. The people open carrying are a deterrent to criminals. But in case a criminal is still bold enough to attack any of us, there will be at least 3 guns trained on them that they didn't know were there.

All very good points and well said. I met a fellow in a walmart the other day who was open carrying a 1911 and as he pushed his cart by me, I pointed to his weapon and smiled big, then brushed aside my concealed Sig under an open shirt. This struck up a conversation where I said he was the first open carry I'd seen in Arkansas in all my years here, and yes, I look for them all the time. He says he's seen a few, but not enough in his mind. He said he's had positive comments from people and owners of businesses, and never had anyone freak out. He was ex military security and I saw him, like me, always scanning the area around us, but very friendly witrh me. I enjoyed our talk and have decided to open carry after that talk we had, as I'm tired of hiding it. We're constitutionaly carry here, and you need no permit to carry concealed or openly. Good show, sir. Thanks for your input on the subject, sir. I agree with you, and I have watched Colion in the past. He's okay, but a little too giddy for my tastes.

I never understood the whole "You should never open carry" crowd. Make yourself a target? Sure, if you are the only person open carrying, but what if EVERYONE was doing it? I know a lot of criminals are dumb, but if I was going to rob a place and I noticed that 10 out of 15 people in the joint had a pistol strapped to their hip I'd probably decide to go elsewhere. And there is a reason certain critters openly display their defense mechanisms. You don't mess with a porcupine because those quills look nasty, and most bigger critters don't think the fight is worth it. You want less crime? Let criminals know that people are carrying the means to defend themselves, and the will to use them.

On November 2, 2017, at the age of 80, I was assaulted in my own driveway by two young men in broad daylight. They found out very quickly that they had bitten off more than they could chew. There's nothing more dangerous than a pist off old man with a gun. From that day forward however, I seldom carriy concealed. The gun on my side for all to see is like a sign on my fence that says, “Beware of this old Dog, he bites”. People look at me a little weird, but they leave me alone. Recently, a high-ranking officer from the local Police Department, registered his disapproval of my open carry policy and claimed a bad person would see me as an opportunity for a free gun. I will not be drawn into an argument. I don't care about your opinion. The only question the police should ask is, is it legal? In Rhode Island it is legal with the proper permit but in all my years, I have never met another person exercising that right. About the statement that I could be viewed as an opportunity for a free gun, such a decision could be hazardous for one's health. I can assure you it would not end well. - An armed society is a polite society. There is no database available with statistics of things that never happened. The deterrent theory cannot be proved. - I open carry.

Excellent points made. Both for and against methods of carrying a firearm. Having been a peace officer for 28 years, I'll tell you this. We were always watching everything arounds us. Both on duty and off. We were trained to observe. To give a detailed description of a suspect from a single glance. We watched the actions of people, constantly analysing suspicious activity. We were required to be armed off duty. And compelled to act upon a felony or assault within our view. We trained on weapon retention often. Many officers loose their lives being shot by their own weapon. Now my personal opinion. Long retired, and in my early 70's, I'm no longer the young and strong 6' 210# bodybuilder and able to fight off an attack. I'm now a 160# diabetic with severe balance issues. Thus I keep a firearm on me at all times. If confronted by an attack by one of more suspects, I will, repeat, will resort to deadly force. I rarely open carry. I don't advertise the fact I'm armed. Decades of training, and three shootings during my career, I can deploy a firearm quickly. And I definitely know how to use it. I'll not be a victim. Period. But I'll not tempt anyone to try for my weapon when visible. Thus, I carry a concealed handgun in an easily deployed position. I've got my own range out in the woods were I live. I train nearly every other day on drawing from concealed. Once a week, I'll train with live fire on one or more targets. No running and crouching down behind little plywood walls like the "tatical kids" do. I'm not physically able to. Nope, I draw and fire from where I stand. Or from a chair, as if in a car or seated at a restaurant. But the point is, I train. The fact that some people are killed trying to deploy a weapon from an unattainable holster position, frankly, that's a clear indication of a total lack of training. Period. They figured that they were armed, and thus capable. Wrong. Without proper training and consistent practice with the weapon system they use, they become a liability. Good intentions never won a confrontation let alone a gunfight. So, in closing I'll say this. If you decide to carry a weapon, be responsible enough to know how to shoot. When to shoot. And train and practice with it continually. Whether you carry open or concealed. And if placed in a situation where the difference in the outcome depends upon your actions, remember this. You are the "first responder" and how well you react will be how well you trained. Thanks for letting an old soldier and peace officer take a moment or your time.

I agree. I open carry, and I'm always alert in public. I can understand the concern, I guess. Now a days everyone has their face in their phones all the time. It was like a year ago. I was coming out of the mall at night just before closing. There were some "thugs" hanging out in the parking lot. I took note of them right away. Mostly because that's normal for me but also because they were almost trying to be hidden. I also noticed they were watching people coming out of the mall. They obviously left me alone because of the iron on my hip. I came to find out they robbed and nearly killed a young man who came out sometime after I left. I don't see how people can miss the logic in that. Who's going to say "hey let's target that guy. He's carrying a gun on his hip." No, sir. They are going to target people who appear to be defenseless. It shouldn't come as a surprise. Taking guns away from lawful citizens is even more foolish. There are countries that are trying that right now. They would lead you to believe it's working. Don't believe statistics. Statistics is a con man's tool. Try asking them why all of a sudden they are trying to ban any knife with a point. Ask them how effective a knife attached to the end of a stick is and how they know. Ask them why all of a sudden, the criminal element started carrying sticks with knives on the end. It seems like something that would be vary inconvenient to carry around. That's what they are doing now. Ask them if they ban knives how long it will be before they have to go chopping down trees all over the country because criminals are carrying sharp sticks instead. It's like you said, this is a tool. The person carrying it is the weapon, and they will always find a way. If we ban firearms, it will be in favor of the criminal element. They won't have to worry about their victims being able to defend themselves.

I'm just the opposite, as I'm of the opinion, and have been for several decades, that the only reason to carry a 9mm pistol is because many such pistols carry a LOT of rounds in a single magazine. After just shy of thirty years as an LEO, both in uniform and plain clothes, I'm of the firm opinion that big relatively slow projectiles make more effective man stoppers than ANY 9mm that HAS to expand to be an effective man stopper The .40S&W and up starts out big and stays that way even if it does not expand dramatically like a 9mm HAS too! I don't know where people get this ridiculous idea that open carrying makes one a target, but it doesn't make any sense, and it needs to stop. Criminals are predators. And predators don't attack the buffalo with the biggest horns. The predatory mindset is all about risk vs reward. Open carrying means you can provide armed resistance. That is a lot of risk to assume, and for what reward? Picking a fight with an armed defender is lose-lose. Even if you "win" the gunfight, you now have a capital murder charge with no statute of limitations hanging over you. There's no real winning outcome, no incentive to take on that much risk. And there's plenty of fish in the sea. Why target the guy that can shoot you when there's so many potential victims that can't? For a four year old iPhone with a cracked screen? A debt card that is going to be canceled in a matter of hours? For a $600 Glock? There's 400 million guns in this country, but you have to have that one? It doesn't make any sense. Stop. Just stop. We have an entire field of study dedicated to the criminal mindset and everything criminology tells us is that there is no bigger deterrent to violence than an armed victim. Open carrying deters violence not only against the carrier but also against everyone in their immediate vicinity. Nothing scares a predator more than armed resistance from an intended victim. @@bobyjones3905 Why would you let them see you reach for the weapon unless you were already targeted? and why would you be targeted when the armed guards were the target and you're either a customer or a subcontractor etc.? there's many examples, but perhaps you remember the 80 some odd year old gentleman in the barber shop that got robbed by two punks with semi autos? Old guy had a concealed derringer and put one in both their heads. He wasn't deemed a threat so he wasn't being watched or held at gunpoint. That's my reasoning for carrying concealed and never letting anyone know I'm armed. I certainly don't go around telling people they should or shouldn't open carry or conceal carry etc., but I do chime in on why I choose to conceal.

@@bobyjones3905 In those examples the only thing that can help is training, speed, accuracy. People that I knew personally that were shot all lived long enough to return fire except one and he was shot in the face with a 12 ga. oo buck load. So even if we do get the drop and plant one in the chest it doesn't mean we'll survive. BTW several months back there was a news video (it's on youtube) where a guy went in a convenience store open carrying and a thug punk in line behind him grabbed his gun from the holster and ran out of the store. I'd think it's a good idea to buy a good security holster as well if you open carry. I also had a friend that was working security for a grocery chain and a customer snatched his DA 357 mag from the holster and shot my friend and a utility clerk! I personally just have seen too many things involving open carry that makes me uncomfortable announcing that I'm armed. To be fair I knew another guy that had his gun taken off him during a robbery and he was conceal carrying, but targeted due to being an employee and another guy who was hit over the head in the park and rendered unconscious and left his gun home, but said it wouldn't have helped in that scenario and would have been taken if he had it as he never saw them coming.

Good stuff plowboy, I open carry alot myself and have picked up certain habits when out myself. Some being how I position myself in places, whether standin or sittin down, not to draw more attention then neccessary. Also with wheel guns have gotten to the point I almost always carry cross draw or reverse carry. Reverse carry more times then anything and have practiced the draw extensively. But when I have people in close proximity I've too picked up the habbit of resting my hand or wrist on the backstrap of the firearm and whatnot. Like you said comes down to mindset, vigilance, and knowing what's goin on around you more then the amount of ammo you got in the gun. You ain't goin to war, but you should be good with whatever tool you decide to carry and how you plan to carry it. God bless ya bud from ole Carolina.

When carrying openly, I’ve had many folk come up and ask me questions; most are friendly like, curious about firearm choice or my reasons for carrying. Others have been downright insulting and vulgar, offended at the sight of my firearm. Luckily however, I’ve never had the police called on me when in public. I liked what you had to say and I can see the points you made. My concern with open carry is: 1. Unless you're military or law enforcement, People who carry are not taught weapon retention (i.e. What to do if someone is trying to take your gun). Saying "Keep Control Of Your Firearm" is not enough. Just like drawing a firearm, means of keeping someone from taking the gun (Concealed or Open carrying) needs to be taught. 2. If open carrying, someone can call the police and falsely accuse you of drawing your gun and pointing it at them or someone might freak out and start yelling "He's Got A Gun!! He's Got A Gun!". And that will open a big can of worms. Unless I am at a shooting event, I'd rather no one know I have a gun till I draw it and use it. That's just me. Take Care and God Bless, Mr. Plowboy! And Hello To Mrs. Plowboy! You better catch up to her making those laps or she will start out running you! LOL

Respect your decision and your situational awareness while open carrying, but I won’t carry open for two main reasons; 1.) Colion is right, where criminals are more violent and more brazen, if they rush into a place to rob it and see your gun, you’re a threat to them. They may run away, but they may also make you their first target cause you’re standing between them and their loot. There’s a lot of places in this country where criminals aren’t afraid to murder. 2.) Maybe in the woods or farming communities, people are fully comfortable with seeing people carrying, but not everyone feels that way in all areas of the country. There’s no sense in scaring people in areas where it’s not as common. I respect your comparison of open vs concealed draw, but training is the most important key here. I have an open and concealed holster for my pistol, and I can draw both just as quick. Practice, practice, practice. But at the end of the day, we both stand for the same belief; the 2nd. Happy shooting brotha

Exactly. Open carry is fine in churches and Walmart. You're not going to run into any bad people there in all likelihood. But, you don't want to be open carrying at a convince store in Jackson, MS, Chicago, IL or Baltimore, MD in the bad part of town. There are people there who shoot cops who are open carrying. They are not scared of guns. Most of them have been shot at, if not shot, already.

I’ve done both. I can remember going into a store for the first time open carrying I felt like I had my ding-a-ling hanging out of my pants! Lol. But over time I became very comfortable with it. If I could carry concealed all the time I probably would. But the availability of comfortable holsters, a protruding belly, clothing and climate make it impossible to do so. When I do conceal it is with an OWB holster level 2 retention. I can’t do appendix, or IWB. I’ve tried multiple times with multiple holsters and it simply doesn’t work for me. I have 2 daily carries. A winter and a summer. My winter carry is a Springfield Hellcat Pro with my holster that’s OWB, tight to my hip and concealed 50% of the time until I take my jacket off then it becomes open. But my summer carry is a SW Bodyguard 380 with an integrated Crimson Trace laser. Fits down in my front pocket beautifully and not any heavier than a smartphone. It has a heavy enough trigger pull to where I never have to worry about accidental discharges. I carry for one reason and one reason only. SELF PRESERVATION. I don’t do third party shootings, I don’t go anywhere with a gun that I would never go to without one. When I follow those 3 basic rules my chances of ever having to use a firearm in self defense drop to almost zero.
