Working Horses With Jim

Күн бұрын

Today Jim & William (our Amish hired man) are plowing our vegetable garden with our draft horses, Ken (Percheron) and Baron (Suffolk Punch)! Jim shares a little about how to plow with a walking plow.
Watch our videos to learn about draft horses- horse logging, horse farming, and horse training! Jim uses Belgian, Percheron, and Suffolk horses to do work on the farm and in the woods. He teaches about harnesses, horse-drawn logging and farming equipment, horse feeding and maintenance, and voice commands for horses. New videos uploaded every week. Keep watching to see how Jim trains his new Suffolk Punch colts as he has trained his full-grown teams!

Love this lesson on working the garden plot with single bottom hand plough, wise to have one person drive the horses, and another strong set of arms to guide the plow…especially when the rocks pop up! Great looking result. Nice soil…hope the rain made soil easier to till! Oh boy! Nippy Skippy, bad dog! Better “nip that habit in the bud” before human or beast get hurt, perhaps by a well placed kick? 🧲Skippy has so much energy and wants to be part of everything and in my view gets in the way sometimes. My farmer uncle used to shut the dog in the barn when working with machinery which can be dangerous…that way 😢he did not have to keep track of where the dog was and could concentrate more on the job at hand. Thank you so much for sharing these videos…learn something every time! Greetings from Canada🇨🇦

What a difficult job you and William have had plowing the garden. Watching your struggles caused me to consider just how hard it must have been for pioneer farmers. With their primitive plows cutting through the very tough roots of the prairie grass roots must have been really exhausting. You two men will probably feel an extra twinge or two tomorrow. Seeing the freshly plowed earth is always a beautiful sight to me. 😊😊😊

Hey Jim , Brenda and William, That was a great plowing demonstration the vegetable garden. Your friend George should be able to advise on the elevation & .or depth issue of the single furrow plow. My memory . of my grand father plowing with a single furrow plow with his special Percheron Gelding named Ben who Super Ken reminds me of him so much. . Also my Grand Dad used line extensions that which were attached at the ends and were placed over his shoulder on one side and underneath his arm on his opposite side. Which allowed him to set and guide the plow in the furrows. Ben was driven by voice commands similar to what you use . Grand Dad used the term walk on to start Ben forward and of course the standard Gee and Haw and of course the most important command was Whoa there.

QUESTION""""""""" Why do you plow in a circle making each pass a smaller and smaller circle? Would it not be easier for both you and the horses to circle the entire field one time, plowing the headlines, and then plow a side and followed by coming down the center. Your circle would remain the same turn diameter not putting the horses on a tighter and tighter turn. Great teaching, Jim, as always.

My Folks Had a way of Connecting the Lines, probably with a Hornes Buckel allowing for Adjustments as needed. Then they placed the Lines over one Shoulder (generally the Right Sholder and around under the Left Arm as thy were mostly Right-Handed). This way thy could hold the Lines and the Plow Handel's as needed and use Gee and Haw. One Plus I see with this is you never Drop the Lines completely. The Drawback is if the Team Spooks for some reason you might get drug a few feet before getting things under control again. Wors comes to Wors you can Bend over and put your Arms and hand Foreword and let the Lines slip off over your head. Letting your Team run away with anything is not a good idea! Raymond W. I usually spray my moldboards with red oxide primer after I get finished plowing, I’ll pressure wash them and then spray them with a good coat of primer, it keeps rust off and also comes off after one pass through the field!

When we finished plowing each year, we sprayed the soil off the plow and let it air dry. A can of Rustoleum painted the moldboards to prevent rust.

Thats a lot of work to make a garden, but if you want to grow food you have to do it.. Barron acts like he dont like to get in the furrow. Maybe like staying on the undone ground..I love Baron. He was s such a handsome boy and that little prance he has.. God bless❤️🙏🌹
