I did this a few years back. I took my battery powered jigsaw to the junkyard and cut out the roof of the same model of car And fit it, cut and glassed it on the inside and used filler on the outside. I didn’t feel comfortable welding it because the metal is so thin I didn’t want it to warp.

i just riveted it on the top side with honda bond for a gasket. then ran a dab around the outside edge and cleaned it all up after. I wish i was able to do it like this, so much cleaner.

Awesome work. I have an 86 CRX SI and hate the sunroof. Doesn’t work, puts 40lbs in the worse place and in right turns my helmet hits the headliner. I cut a roof off of a non-sunroof car and found a headliner. Still struggling to find a body shop willing to re-skin the roof. So many are all about insurance work and not true body work. Inspiring video.

I like to use self tapping screws to hold panels like the roof plug in place, then just plug weld the self tapper holes when you're done

That kind of defeats the purpose of deleting the sunroof for that clean roof style that he wanted.

@@bigdfitness5020 A smooth roof would be needed regardless for a buck (hence this work isn't wasted). Lots of cars pull off a black roof nicely. Consider this though, a carbon roof takes care of the strengthening/support they mention they need to add. You can get a ton of rigidity without the overhead bracing that interferes with helmets and moose size people.

With the plug welded in the roof is really stiff and strong now, but a carbon cap has definitely crossed our minds, especially given Tim’s expertise in the area. We’ll see what he thinks when we take the car down to him next week.

Nice plug job :) not to harsh a comment but you still need to grind those welds down . Don't worry about pin holes just get smooth so when you put a ruler over the two sealed edges they are level. Still nice work boys 👍

I have been following your build for some time now but didn't start at the begining. I own a California RA22 and thats what brought me too your channel. You guys do very detailed work that has given me insight on other aspects of my Celica as well as tool use. The tin snip segment was new to me as well. I have yellow ones in my tool drawer so now I know they are universal. On a side note, what is the name of the song you started playing at the 12 minute mark after the Top Gun video clip when you start the welding? That is a cool rave song! keep up the great work that you provide to the Celica community!
